Re: Initial Jobless claims increase to 870,000

This is a common story hereabouts. It weakens the population and makes the Covid worse in these communities. She's lucky, because the CA system has been halted while they fix their ancient software written in COBOL. The Nooz says that's because of too much fraud, but then the Nooz always says that. ...

Re: Red Skies Over San Francisco.

Sam is correct that the weather forecast for LA is not abnormal for this time of year. The normal for LA is too hot, too dry, and generally toxic. The air fills up with allergens, smoke, and humidity so low that your skin itches. Lately, we can also add the fun of utilities turning off the power in ...

Re: Red Skies Over San Francisco.

Exactly. You get plant species in fire prone areas which have evolved to use fire to spread their seeds. This is common in SoCal. It's another way that fire is part of the ecology. You hear a lot about an Australian species of Eucalyptus trees, which became popular as wind breaks in CA because they ...

Re: Red Skies Over San Francisco.

Fire was always part of the forest ecology. The idea of never ever letting anything catch fire in the forest was pretty much dead. In some places, they did prescribed burns in the off season, when there was an off season. Smokey the Bear should have been shown with his shovel in one hand and a torch...

Re: Daily Observations in the Age of the Coronavirus

Is the blue or red faces caused by the computer's camera or webcam or does it have to do with adjusting Zoom controls? Good question. I don't think Zoom offers a way to change the color balance in something like a laptop or phone camera, but I haven't looked at all the settings. Of course avoiding ...

Hence the government relief idea, contingent on the businesses continuing to operate. Yes, it might raise the deficit. Yes, the Air Force might not get more bombers it doesn't want. The sums involved are enormous but these are enormous times. The choice does not have to be between economics and a ca...

Re: Red Skies Over San Francisco.

Intense fire fighting continues around Mt. Wilson. The New York Times ran a story on how it had been declared safe, but no one told the fire that. You have choppers and the occasional tankers dropping various things on the often almost vertical terrain. It's still very scary and there's no end to it...

Re: Daily Observations in the Age of the Coronavirus

I've found Zoom to be user-friendly. That's something you don't see much any more. The biggest problem I've seen with background noises is that they can cause a person who isn't speaking to flash on-screen for everyone in full screen mode. It's brief, but I can see how it could cause a distraction. ...

Here's a subversive idea: government aid to businesses that show an income loss exceeding a certain figure/percentage/whatever. Not a dole. An investment. That's easy to check from tax forms, and there are already penalties for tax fraud. Most industrialized countries understand that the pandemic is...

Re: Red Skies Over San Francisco.

There are some pretty intense air operations over three different places on the Bobcat Fire. The three most active areas are being hit by just about everything short of the 747. The DC-10 is there, as are some large converted transport planes and a couple from the MD-80 design line. I think the stra...

Re: Coronavirus Asshole of the Day

The primary idea of the mask thing, as I understand it, is in case you have the coronavirus and are spreading it because you don't have symptoms yet. It's more about keeping the virus in than keeping it out. A secondary benefit, though, is that if everyone has their masks on, transmission of the vir...

^ Good rant, and pretty much an accurate one. I watch the mushroom clouds, real ones, same physics as nukes only slower, form over what used to be the Angeles National Forest. Re: Red Skies Over San Francisco.

New evacuation order just went out for an area near the Big Pines Highway and SR2. What continues to stand out for me is the low firefighting resources assigned to the Bobcat Fire. I know that this is because there are so many other fires and also because it's 2020 and nothing's normal. However........

Re: Red Skies Over San Francisco.

It's a mix. The hills you see were burned out in several previous fires, and they have scrubby chaparrel and some grasses. Their shady sides, such as in the river valley that SR2 goes through, had the real old-school pine forests before humans fucked up the planet. After humans did this, we started ...

Re: Coronavirus Asshole of the Day

I'm wearing the masks. The time for debate has long since ended. The real improvement comes when everyone's wearing them. The transmission rate is cut dramatically, allowing the economy to open up faster. Along with test and trace, it's all we have right now. There will always be people who think it...

Bobcat Fire is intensifying due to a wind shift. 5-mile front burning northward toward inhabited places. Wrightwood evacuating. Scary radio traffic. People trapped, etc. This is a big one. The Angeles NF dragon is breathing fire again. This is shot from Irwindale, quite far away and south of the mou...

The flareup near the Mt. Wilson parking lot is down to just smoldering, and the cliff there is coated with retardant. A fierce air attack goes on north of the observatory, where things have really blown up. 3 tankers are following LEAD 49 round and round. One of them is a C-130 with the MAFFS, answe...

Hot and fast on the Bobcat Fire. The DC-10 loaded and returned, now it's behind LEAD 49 in a merry-go-round with 3 smaller tankers, all circling Mt. Wilson. A water dropping helicopter is working on the same area. They're really hitting this place, which seems to be a cliff below the parking lot/loo...

Re: Coronavirus Asshole of the Day

There was a Farmer-Labor Party in a number of states after WWI. It represented a left-populist coalition of two interest groups, farmers and workers, who at the time had pretty much the same fight going with the fat cats, railroad barons, etc. Towards the end of all this, Woody Guthrie did a song ab...

Re: Red Skies Over San Francisco.

I read the same sites you do, and I agree that resources are way down. The command people have talked about this, and InciWeb has some references to it. The Bobcat Fire does have only 1300, and they're just not sufficient for a fire going all the way from Pasadena to the desert. From what I can see,...

Re: Red Skies Over San Francisco.

The Bobcat Fire seems to be the biggie around here. It gets bigger and bigger and containment is down to 3%. The command people keep talking about lack of fire fighting resources. That does seem to be the case. This is a perfect case for calling on the military, but at least on TV we don't see any. ...
