"Reverend Billy" opens for Neil Young
Reverend Billy is a New York/ East Village hell raiser who had his first 15 minutes of fame for his Church of Stop Shopping, which would get him in trouble with the cops in the streets of Midtown every Planetary Buy Nothing Day. That became a lost cause, but he carries on with the Earthchxrch and a ...

Re: Persons of Note Who Have Passed Away
Whatever happened to emergent naturalism? It was a very popular idea in academic philosophy circles a few eons ago when I was taking classes in the subject. The notion was that material processes such as the brain could create much higher level processes such as Shakespeare, that would take on a lif...

Re: The New Solar Thread
The southwestern quadrant of the solar disk, which we see as the southeastern quadrant due to the reverse angle of terrestrial view, is one big active region continuously spitting plasma into space. It's basically the solar system's largest blowtorch, with a built in nuclear death ray as well due to...

The word "socialist" lost all meaning when the USSR appropriated it. It used to mean something different from what it meant in Stalin's time. The fact that there is still a Stalinist fringe in US politics does not help the problem, but as Republicans like to tell us, it's a free country. I...

It would be far more effective to build a wall UNDER the southern border, and then there are still the oceans, not to mention the world's longest unfortified border up north running all the way from Seattle to Maine. Funny... the Gilded Age era that the Republicans so badly want to put us back into ...

Republicans must go bonkers when they see those specimens of the human embryo on display in museums. That's a moral and sentient being, oops I mean a potential major donor, in there, you know.

People are fleeing inflation. You check NYC rents recently? It's off the chart. Another consequence of Republican inflation, caused by bad policy during Covid (The Donald's watch) and the resulting supply chain failure (ditto). Exacerbated by the wars that Republican foreign policy contributed to. I...

Glenn doesn't understand. It is fundamental Republican policy that every fertilized egg is a moral and sentient being with a God-given right to survive. They get a lot of money from people who think that. It is also fundamental Republican policy that as soon as the baby comes out and the cord gets c...

We've actually backed off a bit from where we were last week, and one reason is due to off-camera diplomacy by the sane guys in the room. You didn't see it on the Nooz, but it's the main reason we aren't all worrying about whether there will be a planet to live on this time next year. Even the Congr...

Currently we have several sunspot regions that have essentially merged into one huge complex that has met if not exceeded Carrington size. Fortunately the super-region has not reached the same level of magnetic complexity as Dr. Carrington's, though if one looks in the right wavelength they will see...

> Human animals No human being is an animal. Netanyahu should shuffle off this mortal coil and take the WWII subhuman groove-thing along with him. Israel was founded on hope for the future and he turned it into part of the problem. Frankly I wouldn't treat any animal the way he treated Gaza. He wall...

Gonna get worse when the Paramount deal closes, though right now they're probably taking Vegas odds on who will be the other company.
I'm glad I don't write for the trades. It's a full time job just keeping up with who owns what and how much of it they own.

Seriously, I doubt anyone ever got dinged for picking up trash. It's technically an infraction but unless the shoot is on a studio lot things get considerably less picky in the fog of war. Then of course there are dispensations to speed up work, such as an electrician moving a cutter in front of a l...

Russia lost the Cold War, but it's currently winning the sequel. Putin has the USA business establishment eating out of his hand. The sad excuse for a news media in the US are his unwitting foot soldiers. It's the most successful propaganda I've ever seen. It's created a world in which Americans fee...

The self-immolation was completely the result of conspiracy theories and their ascendancy in American politics since the coming of social media. This guy threw a whole bag of leaflets into the air before he lit himself up, and they were full of the usual racist Internet-driven ravings about those fo...

Yep. Guy just self-immolated in the crowd scene outside the drumpf trial. Never a dull moment this year.
I would imagine the Nooz can't believe their luck.
In its own quiet way, this country is even scarier than the Middle East.

That's how Ray Gun supposedly ended the Cold War. The calculus among policy makers who gave Ronnie his lines in the morning before his wardrobe/make-up call was that if we forced another Cold War, they'd run out of money before we did. This actually worked, but when we ran out of money the situation...

Quality matters in motion picture unions. The effect there is that every job on a set becomes very compartmentalized and you practically need a scorecard to know who to ask for what. However the unions all have training programs and they enforce rigorous quality standards, as one would expect in a b...

The primary driver this year seems to be an anticipated El Nino/La Nina switch in the Southern Oscillation. Those are tricky and unpredictable. My own experience suggests that the results will either be spectacular or practically nonexistent. There seems to be no intermediate case here.

Used to be that you'd see that kind of security for Super Bowls. Figures that now we'd need it even for the player draft. BTW, speaking of drafts, if this situation persists in the world, everyone under 45 had best start worrying about that letter that starts with "Greetings from the President ...

Nothing in the quote about regulating firearms. The speaker was simply noting that when deadly weapons are introduced into a situation, don't be surprised when the outcome is permanent.
