3m3 minutes ago
Tom Petty Radio on XM just now: “He’s straddling between two worlds right now and it doesn’t look good,
but let’s hold out hope.”

it appears the official time of death is 8:40pm PST.
makes it 9:40MT and 11:40 EST.

he was in-between for awhile.

RIP Tom Petty

Damn the Torpedoes was the first 8 track I bought for my stylin’ 1974 Buick Apollo. I originally had a FM converter and finally saved up to buy an actual 8 track. The tape was well worn.

I will miss him.

i had a brother who went to HS with tom and the rest of the band, only one HS then.
i remember hearing about them making a band then hearing tom had quit school,
then learning he'd quit to get away from his family, his dad.
then he dropped off radar i was hearing about from brother.
then, we learned he was putting a band together. he was safe somewhere
and getting on with things.
i remember hearing that from brother.
then a few years later they had mudcrutchFarm and it was so good to see he had busted
thru the bullshit.

he was quiet, i didnt know him other than to smile say hi and wander the farm with others
while bands played and we waited for tom to play.

it was good, good times in Gville then. Gville green.

This ruined my day when i heard it. The first song I was exposed to of Petty's was Refugee. Turned me into an instant fan. Damn the Torpedoes was my first album of theirs'.

At least I can say I saw them on tour when they showed here in '06. Have the T-shirt too (only worn once).

RIP Tom

"I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away

I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken

And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
And they were singing

Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

They were singing
Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die"

So, when I listen to Tom Petty's music and lyrics, I know intimately the places and attitudes he is writing about in SoCal during the time he was composing such songs, the western portion of the San Fernando Valley.

I was born and largely raised there.

Tom is more than a decade older than me. Seems fair to think of him as the Bob Dylan figure for my generation, that slight gap between the baby boomers and generation X.

jeez, learning to fly and i aint got wings,...coming down is the hardest thing...learnin to fly.

i knew these southern NFla dirt roads during college when Tom was fleeing home.
bless his heart he Never forgot what he learned. which made him different than most males
who packed it inside and dumped it on others.
he did all he accomplished without a decent, good...non violent inhouse male 'dad' father figure.
tom created Tom Petty.

he left violence and became a Man. Bravo Tom, GainesvilleFLa will Never forget you.
it was a pleasure.

men can be good despite what theyve been shown. Tom Petty is an example.

Quote:
"Learning To Fly"....
Well I started out down a dirty road
Started out all alone
And the sun went down as I crossed the hill
And the town lit up, the world got still=

I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing

Well the good ol' days may not return
And the rocks might melt and the sea may burn

Well some say life will beat you down
Break your heart, steal your crown
So I've started out for God knows where
I guess I'll know when I get there

I'm learning to fly, around the clouds
But what goes up must come down

ya gotta realize toms dirt road was just down the next dirt road from where my daddy had a place
to further raise his boys, out in the rurals of alachua county fla. it was not unusual for its dirt roads.
and my daddy wasnt poor.

this song has always busted the hearts of those who knew anything of Mudcrutch.
hearts went for tom petty in gainesvilleFla.

so.....for all you ...guys,...out there who feel lost alone left behind...welll.... i guess ill know when
i get there. learning to fly.
this is a guy who wrote away the shit awful of life and did it so well.

we did an Alice's Restaurant 'big picture' one year; this couple was splitting town
and wanted a 'big pic' of the usual suspects. someone brought the old open back lid free hearse.
it was too cool and the pic came out well.

you fly Tom.
