CBS did a story this being the 50th anniversary of his death. He was a hit at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and he needed a cross-over song hit. He called his friend, Steve Cropper, and told him he had hit song and in November he went to Memphis to finish it with Cropper. They cut the record and two weeks later Cropper was getting ready to "overdub some lick" to the track when Redding popped in and said "I'll see you Monday." That weekend Redding's plane crashed. The label rushed to release the song and it became a hit. On the broadcast, they said it was the first time an artist earned a number one record on the Billboard Top Charts posthumously and won Redding and Cropper a Grammy.
