Saw Annilhilation last night. Some interesting special effects. Some very gruesome scenes. Over all I was less than satisfied with the ending.

Anyone else see it?

Not yet. I may wait for DVD on that one.

I'm kind of interested in Wrinkle in Time for a number of reasons. I've heard both ways on whether it's all that good, so I won't say based on other people's reactions.

I saw A Wrinkle in Time and I wasn't impressed. Perhaps my expectations were to high but I'd rank it as a so-so picture. Of course, I hadn't read the book so I didn't have any background on it to relate to the movie.

I haven't seen it, but apparently the original novel is actually part of a trilogy. No word yet if filmmakers will do this solely as a standalone, or do the rest of the trilogy.

I've been avoiding spoilers about the film, but I already heard quite a bit about the book (though I've yet to read it).

This strikes me as the kind of existential dystopia I would normally see, if these days I didn't feel like I was constantly living in one.

Agreed on dystopian SF. Usually my fave genre, but right now there's too much of the real thing going around.

Yes, one of the great things about the original Blade Runner is that one can see L.A. actually evolving into something very much like what they depict. At the time, there was a great sense of someone finally having the balls to tell it the way it is.

Here's the thing. L.A. tried to go outward, but that became too draining, so now it goes upward. It's a form of gentrification, because nobody normal can afford to live in the new housing. So you have places like Westwood and the suddenly-hip downtown which are stratifying. You get the fat cats in their $25 million condos in the sky, and everyone else stepping over sleeping homeless while stabbing and shooting one another down in the street. Just put in some means of transportation up there, and the deed is done.
