It's Time for Black America to Break Up With the Democratic Party

In all the autopsies of the Democrats' recent shellacking at the polls, a crucial storyline has been left out: the large gains the Republicans made with Black Americans in Virginia. Republican Glenn Youngkin, Virginia's new governor, received historic levels of Black support, turning Trump's gains with Black Americans from an aberration into a trend.

The truth is, all is not well between Black America and the Democratic Party, and the November 2021 election night results might very well turn out to be the rumblings of a breakup that is long overdue.

Lush is quitting social media. The start of a trend?

The Global Anti-Social Media Policy is a grand title for a high-stakes marketing decision by British cosmetics brand Lush. It’s the name of a new pledge by the brand to stop posting on four major platforms – Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok and Snapchat – in a move that is sure to be closely scrutinised by marketers throughout the cosmetics sector.

Lush has a history of taking up political stances, from combating animal cruelty and partnering with Allout on its 2015 #Gayisok campaign, to donating profits from sales of its Error 404 bath bomb towards grassroots digital activists working to keep the internet free, open and safe.

The former prosecutor charged with misconduct in the Ahmaud Arbery case was booked into a Georgia jail the same day three men were convicted of murdering the Black jogger.

Former Brunswick Judicial Circuit district attorney Jackie Johnson turned herself in Wednesday morning at the Glynn County jail and later released on her own recognizance after she was indicted last week on a felony charge of violating her oath of office and a misdemeanor count of obstructing police, reported the Associated Press.

No one seems to like the Lincoln Project anymore

It was the darling of the resistance for savagely attacking Donald Trump. But now, everyone keeps rolling their eyes at the Lincoln Project and fears they may be clearing a path for the former president’s reemergence.

The outside political organization headed by disaffected Republicans and other top Democratic operatives has experienced caustic blowups, internal disputes over beach house-level paydays, and disturbing allegations involving a disgraced co-founder. A recent campaign stunt evoking the march on Charlottesville to close the Virginia governor’s race earned them near universal scorn. And one of the organization's most recognized members is facing blowback for rooting for another Trump nomination on grounds that he’d be the easiest Republican to beat in the general election.

Tories suspend Plymouth council leader after ‘victim-blaming’ remarks

The leader of Plymouth city council has been suspended from the Conservative party over “victim-blaming” comments, after he told women “not to put themselves in a compromising position” following the killing of 18-year-old Bobbi-Anne McLeod.

The councillor, Nick Kelly, spoke about women’s safety in Plymouth after the body of McLeod was found in Bovisand, near Plymouth, Devon, last Tuesday. “Everybody has a responsibility not to try to put themselves in a compromising position,” Kelly told ITV two days later.

Twitter bans posting pictures of ‘private individuals’ against their wishes

Twitter will now let private individuals request takedowns of pictures or videos featuring them. The company announced the change this morning, extending an existing ban on private information to cover media. It’s aimed at preventing harassment or invasions of privacy and includes exceptions for posts that are “shared in the public interest or add value to public discourse.”

“Sharing personal media, such as images or videos, can potentially violate a person’s privacy, and may lead to emotional or physical harm,” reads a Twitter Safety blog post announcing the change. “The misuse of private media can affect everyone, but can have a disproportionate effect on women, activists, dissidents, and members of minority communities.” Twitter will evaluate complaints by the subject of a picture or video — or someone representing them — according to its larger private information policy.
