Mexican folk tune. You've heard it.

La cucaracha, la cucaracha,
Ya no puede caminar;
Porque no tiene, porque le falta
Marihuana que fumar

Apparently it actually was about a cockroach at one time, but in Mexico it became a means of political resistance. The power structure couldn't shut down folk tunes. The last line that was originally about missing legs on the dead roach became about the drug use of political leaders.

The chorus translates:

The cockroach, the cockroach,
Is now unable to go;
Because it doesn't have, because it lacks
Marijuana for smoking.

The last line gets changed a lot in versions gringos hear, to take out the evil weed, but that is how the song is supposed to go.

Not really about drugs, more about an underground critique of Huerta, a warlord turned politician who smoked a lot of weed.

There are other verses. In fact, some guy estimated 10 million of them. The one we'd always hear in L.A. goes:

Una cosa me da risa:
Pancho Villa sin camisa;
Y tambien es muy raro
Si se viste en el charro.

Which is apparently a Carranza follower verse, though I doubt most people know that. Translation:

One thing makes me laugh:
Pancho Villa shirtless;
And also it's very rare
If he dresses in a charro (Mexican tight cowboy pants).

I am reminded of Mr. Putin's tendency to get photographed riding horses, bears, etc, usually naked from the waist up.

There are also many many verses concerning Villa's tendency to make many many children wherever he went.

Etc.

Fun stuff.

Sometimes the verses got less metaphoric. This one popular with the original Zapatistas in the economically disadvantaged south goes:

Todo se ha puesto muy caro
Con esta Revolución;
Venden la leche por onzas
Y por gramos el carbón.

Everything was made very expensive
In this Revolution;
Selling milk by the ounces
And by grams the coal.

and another one

Oigan con gusto estos versos
Escuchen con atención;
Ya la pobre cucaracha
no consigue ni un tostón.

Hear these verses with pleasure
Listen with attention;
Now the poor cockroach
Doesn't even get a tostón. (Mexican coin. Small change.)
