Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
He wrote and performed songs which were patriotic and celebrated our country's greatness.
So of course the New York Times trashed him.

But how about his attacks on the Dixie Chicks? Was that patriotic too?
Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
What the Chix did was highly unpatriotic. They were trashed by rw media and fox. While being celebrated by lw media for trashing our country

Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
Not true at all. They have the right to free speech.
But hey they're women, so trashing them is okay, isn't it?
All they said is they weren't proud the President was from Texas.
Cancel culture.
Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
When was the last time you posted anything positive about our country.
And
Does your statement mean you agree what the Times posted is pure bullshit. Even though you defended it.
Finally never again a word about aboutery

Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
I don’t think attacking women’s right to free speech and trying to destroy their careers over one comment is patriotic.
Of course, you have no problem attacking MY patriotism and love of country, do you?
Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
I don't know much about Keith, outside of what I've read. I don't listen to or follow country music. Just not my thing. I don't hate it, I'm just not entertained by it.
He did and said something that would probably counter my beliefs, but if I accept the position of someone like Taylor Swift, I must also not object to Keith's beliefs.
Even if, as this article surmises, his beliefs were not quite what we may have been led to believe.

Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
Cancel culture was added to the vocabulary by the conservative noise machine. As usual it was a description of a certain human tendency that got generalized and stuck onto this week's target of whatever clique had the ears of the general public.
The facts are that everyone's being doing it since civilization and mass communications existed. Be thankful that it doesn't get you burned at the stake any more, just ostracized.
The tendency in question is scapegoating and it's as old as human evolution.

Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
I want to say this about Toby Keith. Always been a fan, and there’s not many folks in modern Country Music that I really like. But “Who’s your Daddy” (with the HILARIOUS video) and “I Wanna Talk About Me” (again, hilarious video), “Red Solo Cup”, “I Will Never Smoke Weed with Willie Nelson Again” and one of my favorites, “Beer for My Horses” with Willie himself, are GREAT songs.
Not crazy about his jingoistic songs, I just ignore them. I don’t like what he did to the Dixie Chicks, but much of that might have been performative, as entertainment personalities often have spats to increase buzz about them.
He really never went political, MAGA or any of that like Nugent or Kid Rock, so that’s fine.
I guess I’ll go re-watch a bunch of his videos. If I had a horse, I’d buy it a beer.

Too bad for his family and friends that he died.
Beyond that it is not possible for me to care less about Toby Keith’s politics.
That being said hypernationalism exhibited as hyperpatriotism is bullshit and dangerous bullshit at that.
Every single empire/great nation has fallen. Every. Single. One. Imo, hyperpatriotism is one of the factors that leads to this failure.

The New York Times should not have trashed him. I doubt when Hanoi Jane goes to her reward they will trash her political stance. Mention it yes buy in a positive manner.bird wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2024 9:09 am Too bad for his family and friends that he died.

Why don't you complain when the right wing noise machine trashes liberals when they die?
Or, for that matter, while they are alive? You vote for people that are scared shitless of Taylor Swift.

Forever Grateful For Toby Keith - Stephen Colbert Bids Farewell To A Country Music Legend
“We hit it off like a house afire” says Stephen Colbert about his first meeting with country legend Toby Keith, who became a frequent guest on “The Colbert Report” and later performed on “The Late Show.” The two men made an unlikely pair, in Stephen’s words, “like when a duck and a horse are friends.” Thank you, Big Dog.
Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
Glenn, I just went and read the NYT piece. Did you not read it, just took Facebook’s word that it was a hit piece? It didn’t trash Keith at all, it was quite positive. It also pointed out that he regretted trashing the Dixie Chicks.Glennfs wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2024 6:09 am He wrote and performed songs which were patriotic and celebrated our country's greatness.

I guess him admitting to being a Democrat (a conservative one, he said) is what pissed you off so damned much?
It did NOT trash Toby Keith. I keep telling you to READ the links you provide. Idiot.

I have great reading comprehension. When I opened the article, I was expecting a hit job, because that's what you said it was. And it wasn't, not at all.
It's you that didn't read it. You saw it on FB and never opened it, just came to the board and posted it.
Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
Again, I don’t care what Toby Keith’s politics were.
As for Jane Fonda? Well, a bunch of lying politicians including the p.o.s. known as Kissinger kept the Vietnam war going and thus the killing going for years.
Iirc, Ho Chi Minh thought that the Americans would support him because of our revolution against Great Britain. He failed to understand that we have had the tendency demonstrated multiple times over our history to support RW whack job governments usually in the service of corporations. The South Vietnam government was completely corrupt.
How many civilians and soldiers died because of American arrogance in Vietnam?

And then they pointed out how he doesn’t really believe that. How he regrets going after the Dixie Chicks.
It was a very positive article.
I mean, you may love the “boot in the ass” but that wasn’t what he was about. It was just what sold.
Just like Merle Haggard singing “we don’t smoke marijuana in Muskogee” while he was smoking it all the time.
Is mentioning that reality running down Haggard? I don’t think so. It’s SHOW business. You may WISH he believed what he was singing, but he didn’t. He sang what sold CDs.
Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
So if you are correct that means that Jane Fonda might not actually hate our country....interestinggounion wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2024 11:03 am And then they pointed out how he doesn’t really believe that. How he regrets going after the Dixie Chicks.

Re: Toby Keith Committed an Unforgivable Sin
You’re so damned good at holding grudges from 50 years ago, but pretend that Donald Trump is old news.
Fonda did stupid stuff as a young person, just as you did. But you think you should be forgiven for what you did.
And that has nothing to do with the article on Toby Keith’s death.
