Emma Haruka Iwao smashes pi world record with Google help

The value of the number pi has been calculated to a new world record length of 31 trillion digits, far past the previous record of 22 trillion.

Emma Haruka Iwao, a Google employee from Japan, found the new digits with the help of the company's cloud computing service.

...

Google announced the news in a blog on Pi Day (14 March - "3.14" in American date notation).

I'm speechless. A narrow grove gouged so incredibly deep into the fabric of the space time continuum.

I got a song. A fitting song because the first explanation I ever heard in school about pi involved three hobos, a bit of string one of them used to draw a circle in the sand. and then used to measure it's circumference.

And endeavor into discovery cut short when a farmers wife set pies on a nearby windowsill to cool, and all three of those hobos jumped up together and shouted "PIE"

Now that is just irrational.

3.1416 the last digit rounded up to 6 is as much of it as I've ever needed to use, usually I use less. That's machinist equivalent to plus or minus one ten thousand. That is as good as I can measure.

Perhaps a lens maker working on telescopes might need to use eight digits of it a few times in their life.

I didn't do well in math. When my math teacher told me "Pi r-squared" I told her she was wrong and corrected her by saying "Pie are round."
