Everyone knows about Stonehenge and how on the summer solstice at sunrise the sun will appear between certain stones and on the winter solstice it will appear at sunset. Scripps Institute of Oceanography has a long pier and twice a year the sun will align precisely between the pilings. People and the local media have dubbed this event "Scrippshenge" because it's similar to what happens at Stonehenge. This past week "Scrippshenge" took place with dozens of people and photographers getting pictures of it. Here's what it looks like.

Re: Scrippshenge
There is also Manhattanhenge, where the sun sets right in the middle of west ends of the crosstown streets twice a year. On the canyon ones like 42nd it can get pretty intense. I was there for it last year and got some good photos.

Re: Scrippshenge
The local news mentioned Manhattanhenge. It's amazing how some of these structures are aligned perfectly for this to happen either by design, like Stonehenge, or by accident.

Re: Scrippshenge
Manhattan isn't oriented due north-south, although everyday descriptions make it sound like it is. West is really northwest on the cross streets. Therefore it happens in late May and early July.
