US companies wrestle with new European privacy rules

US companies are more scared and less prepared than their European counterparts for the EU privacy rules coming into force on Friday, with many rushing to make last-minute changes and some small companies choosing to pull out of Europe altogether.

Tech start-ups, video games makers and ad-tech businesses that specialise in data crunching for marketers are among those pulling products or services or their whole operations out of the EU as a result of the General Data Protection Regulation.

Europe has been ahead of us on this issue for years. Note those "this site uses cookies" warnings. That's an EU regulation too.

GRPR compliance sux!

Seriously though, GDPR is a fabulous idea but implementation is quite another story. No one need take my word for it because it's not just the devs, comms, and IT departments who are complaining.

I wish I could take a poll of just how many people clicked on the links in the dozens of "we're changing our terms of service/privacy policy" emails filling up their inboxes, and actually opted in or out or whatever. My guess: not many. I know I sure haven't.

By the way, the OP article is behind a paywall. This Verge article is along the lines of what I'm seeing in my line of work.

No one’s ready for GDPR

And it's not just co's, it's tons of nonprofit orgs and educational institutions, which are probably the least-prepared and the worst-staffed for this sort of thing.

Luckily, GDPR gives warnings and chances to fix things before levying fines. That's good because it is probably going to end up being a cash cow.

The New York Times sent a privacy email to every person who's ever written for them. They did not use that remarkable thing known as BCC. So they sent a privacy e-mail that is actually invading my privacy. Nice.

I haven't gotten any of those yet. Oh, maybe one from Google. Who remembers?

Mostly I get stuff about SmugMug buying flickr. Some people somewhere seem awfully excited about that.
