Location: The blue parts of the map

Google tracks users who turn off location history
By Jane Wakefield
Technology reporter

To illustrate the effect of these location markers, AP created a visual map showing the movements of Princeton researcher Gunes Acar who was using an Android phone with location history turned off.

The map showed his train commute around New York as well as visits to The High Line park, Chelsea Market, Hell's Kitchen, Central Park and Harlem. It also revealed his home address.

To stop Google saving these location markers, users have to turn off another setting called Web and App Activity, which is enabled by default and which does not mention location data.

The AP story is detailed. I did the procedure it mentioned, and found out that some stuff was already off and some wasn't. I also found out that Google had logged pretty much everything I'd done with its assets, in absolutely minute detail. No biggie. I already knew that. Since it's a private company and I'm using its services pretty much for free, that's less of a pisser than the thing tracking your location when you think it isn't. They shouldn't lie or omit facts (post-modern lying).

Does explain a lot, though. The thing used to be weeks catching on that I wasn't in (place appropriate choice of New York/LA here), now it's hours, max. Usually soon as I get off the plane and handshake the appropriate cell phone network.

If you're using a Google product, they're logging everything you do. Expecting any kind of privacy is just foolish.

Though I'm pretty sure my life is so uninteresting that a server has become sentient and is wondering "Why the hell are we logging this?", before deleting it.

The radical of one century is the conservative of the next. The radical invents the views. When he has worn them out, the conservative adopts them.
