Tumblr’s censoring algorithm even flagged this photo as adult content

Just how incompetent is Tumblr’s censoring algorithm? Hard to say, but the kind of benchmarks it’s setting each day isn’t projecting a pretty picture at all. Almost everyday, we come across reports about normal photos being flagged as explicit. But one specific report we came across today made us come up with this story.

Twitter user @TeeDotally shared a picture Tumblr marked as NSFW. If you leave aside some of the cat/dog photos that Tumblr censored as part of the adult content ban, this is probably the most touching picture that got flagged by Tumblr’s censoring bots.

At least the face looking straight down can be misinterpreted by bad AI as one doing something far more nasty than taking care of a baby. What's the thing with floppy disks? They always seemed pretty G-rated to me, even though you inserted them.

Floppy disks are evil.

I learned that the hard way. I had hundreds of them at one time. And what I found was unless it was used right away they would not store data safely for any real period of time. Anything which stored on five or more disks was a hopeless situation after a couple years.

8.5" floppies were even worse. They seemed awfully prone to bit rot.

Cosmic rays, maybe.

Still doesn't make them XXX rated.
