Miguel Gabela, Damián Pardo unseat incumbents on Miami City Commission

Miami voters opted for change Tuesday, electing a pair of new City Commission members in runoff races.

Former Miami Zoning Board member Miguel Gabela had 54% of 3,223 votes counted to supplant suspended Commissioner Alex Díaz de la Portilla in a rematch four years in the making. Those figures may shift slightly as additional Election Day ballots are counted and cured.

We're heading towards scary times in Europe.

Far-right anti-Islam candidate clinches shock Dutch election win. Here’s what comes next

Far-right politician Geert Wilders sent shockwaves through the European political landscape as he led his party to a decisive victory in the Netherlands’ general elections.

Only late in the campaign did polls begin to suggest that controversial Wilders, who rails against immigration and espouses a series of Islamophobic policies, could come to power after 25 years in politics.

Sounds like the demonization of immigrants is working world wide as a political tactic. Wouldn't be the first time.

Ever wonder if not voting matters. It does as proof a candidate for parish sheriff in Louisiana won by one vote out of over 43,000 votes cast.
In the northwest corner of Louisiana, a candidate for parish sheriff demanded a recount Wednesday after losing by a single vote in an election where more than 43,000 people cast ballots.

The tight race shines a spotlight on Louisiana’s recount process and its outdated voting machines, which do not produce an auditable paper trail that experts say is critical to ensuring election results are accurate. States’ recount abilities have proven to be exceedingly important, especially following the 2020 presidential election when multiple battleground states conducted recounts and reviews to confirm President Joe Biden’s victory.

“This extraordinarily narrow margin ... absolutely requires a hand recount to protect the integrity of our democratic process, and to ensure we respect the will of the people,” John Nickelson, the Republican candidate who trailed by one vote in last week’s election for Caddo Parish Sheriff, posted on social media Wednesday.

When the recount takes place Monday only absentee ballots will be tallied again and checked for errors. But they only account for about 17% of the total vote in the runoff race. Absentee ballots are mailed in and are the only auditable paper trail under Louisiana’s current voting system.

When it comes to the in-person votes, which are paperless, a recount would be similar to hitting a refresh button.

Louisiana Sheriff Candidate Wins by Just One Vote After 43,000 Ballots Cast

A Republican sheriff candidate in Louisiana is demanding a recount after losing an election this week by just one vote.

In a letter posted to Facebook on Wednesday, John Nickelson, the GOP candidate for the Louisiana parish of Caddo, said the slim margin "absolutely" demands a recount take place.

Notice how the Dem loser concedes, asks everyone to get behind the new Mayor?

Instead of screaming “rigged!” And suing everyone in sight?

Democrat Bianca Virnig wins special election for Minnesota House seat

Local school board member Bianca Virnig won a special election on Tuesday to replace former Rep. Ruth Richardson, DFL-Mendota Heights, maintaining the Democrats’ current 70-64 advantage in the House.

Over 6,500 people in the east metro suburban district, which encompasses Mendota, Mendota Heights and a majority of Eagan, voted Tuesday, according to unofficial election results. This is a relatively high turnout for an off-year special election. Republicans were hoping to use an expected low turnout to their advantage in the largely safe DFL district.
