My youngest daughter is in the National Guard and spent last weekend at Ft Jackson where they had to qualify on the rifle range. She hit 31 of 40 which makes her a sharpshooter. She said there was only one female who shot better who she described as a Lesbian Sgt, she then quickly added but, she is very cool. So girls can shoot and todays soldiers have no problem with Gays. Our countries future looks bright and is in good hands.

It's obvious she paid attention in class to achieve it. Shooting is a skill that can be taught to almost anyone. If you look at the demographics of the military it proves that skills can be taught to people with widely different backgrounds. The key with shooting in the military is you have to keep up the skill to continue to be proficient. I scored "Marksman" in basic training on the M16 rifle (got the Marksmanship ribbon) and whenever I transferred overseas or deployed (deployed once) I had to re-qualify. You go through the same type of class as in basic to re-qualify and you get to shoot the M16 to sight your rifle in before you shoot for score. The real test is if you have to shoot in an actual situation where your adrenaline is flowing, your breathing increased, and your heart rate pumping high; all factors to take into consideration when aiming and shooting.

I was a terrible shot myself. My body vibrates, nervous system is always on edge. I've had sgts tell me they could see the tip of my rifle barrel shake.

Good for her. That part of service is the fun part. :)

S'toon you describe yourself in similar to the way I describe my uncle, I could generally see the tip of his rifle barrel shake.

That's the same uncle who one day when I was staying over said, "let's go out this morning and practice for the turkey shoot this afternoon." I was about ten. A turkey shoot is a grange community 0.22 cal marksman event, and pot luck fund raiser. All afternoon people get people to sign up 10 names to a card for a whole series of shoots, (single events). The prize was gift certificate $5, to buy a turkey at the store. Ten names, a dollars each, the Grange cleared 50%.

I went out with him and he explained it all to me, his kids had done it before, I hadn't. He explained it, I did it.

Once in a while since that day, a few times in my life, I've taken a shot and missed. From the first time I picked a rifle up, and ever since, a rifle extends the reach of my hands.

That afternoon they made a new rule at the grange turkey shoot, one could only enter a contest sheet and win three shoots in one day. Soon as a person had won three of them they had to quit. Other people after all needed to have a chance to win a turkey too.

Do women shoot better than men? (As a whole, on average).

Long disputed and debated topic ... heated even at the "dispassionate" site quora. Seems to depend on the type of shooting competition. In some, women do better. Oh, I know. Another sexist stereotype challenged. (One liberals are not likely to be interested in, either.)

This might not surprise you, but men seem to shoot faster :D , whereas women are more accurate, maybe because they take their time a bit more.

Obviously, this relates to that long-standing argument over whether women should be in combat. (Despite the fact that many other U.S. allies have already decided it.)

I know very little about the different shooting positions. But, according to my daughter the females do quite well when they don't have to support the weapon. The position where they are kneeling and having to support the weapon is where they do the worse.

Well, then, hot damn, I know who I'm running to for protection in the coming post-nuclear apocalypse.

Anyway, surprised there's no thread on this, and maybe it deserves its own thread, but seems like the perfect place ...

In historic decision, Pentagon chief opens all jobs in combat units to women
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/che ... ll-expand/

BTW, the one branch of the armed services that is still opposing this decision? Take a guess ... the Marines.

Of course, the U.S. is as always behind the curve, one of my friends here in Miami was a female tank operator in the IDF ... 20 years ago.

Most interesting is the people still opposing women leading troops into battle. Um, I got a few names.

Boadicea. Joan of Arc. Deborah the Israelite Judge. Kathryn Janeway.

OK. The last one is fictional. But she defeated the BORG.

Congratulations, she will do well in the ME war. This is what makes America great. And don't worry, she can see plenty of action.

Pentagon Opens All Combat Roles in U.S. Military to Women

The Pentagon has opened all combat roles in the U.S. military to women. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter announced the shift Thursday. It overturns the longstanding policy of restricting women from holding combat positions, even though they have effectively served in combat zones in Iraq and Afghanistan
