Remembering Betty Davis, Eternal Funk Diva

Betty Davis was the evidence of cool hoped for and the proof of funk felt. The musician, who died on Wednesday at 77, was the subject of a 2017 documentary, “Betty: They Say I’m Different,” but her face rarely entered the camera’s frame. Most of all we see her hands—those hands, accented by periwinkle polish and turquoise rings, that grabbed the world by its cahoonas.

Davis (née Mabry) was born in Durham, North Carolina near the close of the second World War. The exact year once had a touch of elasticity, but the fireball was a Leo—she was born on July 26— to the core. During her documentary, her aunt, Elenora, revealed that she enjoyed being alone in her youth and loved to read. Holding up a press photo of Davis, she said, “She was an unusual person back in those days.” In the black and white image, Davis’ long legs are covered by metallic, thigh high boots, paired with booty shorts and a button down tied tight in the front. An inverted trapezoidal afro frames her face, which is nearly overtaken by her smile.

David Osnos, legal adviser to prominent DC-area business leaders, dies at 89

In a legal career that spanned six decades, beginning as an Arent Fox associate in 1956, David Osnos operated largely behind the scenes, gaining a reputation in business circles as an astute dealmaker, facilitator, negotiator and fixer for his high-profile clients.

In addition to Pollin, he represented the Washington Real Estate Investment Trust, the government contracting firm VSE Corp., the Clark Construction Group and Washington developer Conrad Cafritz. In the early 1990s, during the economic recession and the collapse of the commercial real estate market, Mr. Osnos helped Cafritz save his vast real estate portfolio by engineering a consensual arrangement with more than 70 lenders who were owed more than a $ 1 billion.

Ian McDonald, King Crimson and Foreigner Co-Founder, Dead at 75

Ian McDonald, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter best known for his co-founding roles in both King Crimson and Foreigner, died Wednesday at the age of 75. A rep for McDonald confirmed the musician’s death, adding that McDonald “passed away peacefully on February 9, 2022 in his home in New York City, surrounded by his family.” His son reported on Facebook that the cause was cancer.

McDonald was known as one of the key architects of progressive rock, playing both saxophone and keyboards in King Crimson and co-writing its iconic 1969 debut, In the Court of the Crimson King. The record’s opening track, “21st Century Schizoid Man,” featured McDonald’s wild double-tracked alto-sax solo, which he performed the same year at a famous concert in London’s Hyde Park. He left King Crimson before the year was over, moving on to a duo project with Crimson drummer Michael Giles. He would also appear as a session musician on King Crimson’s 1975 classic, Red.

Berlin Airlift "Candy Bomber" Col. Gail Halvorsen has died at age 101. When the Soviet Union blockaded Berlin after WWII the U.S. responded with a massive airlift to keep the people of Berlin fed. Halvosen saw the plight of the children watching the planes landing at Templehof Airport so he bought candy and handkerchiefs from the PX making the handkerchiefs into parachutes with the candy attached. His actions helped change the Berliner's perceptions of Americans. In 1974, Germany awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his kind deeds.
Retired Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen, the “Candy Bomber” who brought joy to Berlin's children by dropping candy in tiny handkerchief parachutes from his plane when the Soviets blockaded the divided city during the Cold War, has died. He was 101.

Without asking permission, he purchased candy and a handful of handkerchiefs at the Rhein-Main Post Exchange Store, wrote John Provan, an American historian and son of a retired Air Force chief master sergeant.

The next day, he opened the window of his C-54 and began the candy drops.

Operation Little Vittles, as the drop of gum and chocolate bars came to be known, turned into a diplomatic coup, altering Germans' perceptions of Americans and paving the way for future humanitarian airlifts. Halvorsen became known as the "Candy Bomber" and "Der Schokoladen Flieger" — "the Chocolate Flyer."
