Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
Buying a new car at the end of the month. Either a kia Forte or a Toyota corolla.
I've owned 7 kia's with no problems but am leaning towards the Toyota.
Anyone owned a Toyota or has a recommendation.

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
I owned a Toyota Corolla back in the late 70s and it was a good car then but the cars they make now are better. I have no experiences with Kia but they appear to make good cars.
My recommendation would be for you to make a matrix decision chart with the features you want in a car and then assign a number (one or two) to each feature and apply it to each car. Add up the numbers for each car and the one with the higher number is the one you should consider first.

You KNOW my answer. Buy American, buy union. But those are two things you're opposed to, Glenn.
Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
There are no union built cars in that price range that are worth a pint of pee.
Now I've I were looking at SUVs or Pick Ups it would be different.
Also the Corolla is assembled in Mississippi

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
That actually is a good idea. Except both cars are equipped exactly the same. The Toyota is slightly less which is why I am leaning that direction.Number6 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 08, 2022 8:11 pm I owned a Toyota Corolla back in the late 70s and it was a good car then but the cars they make now are better. But on the other hand the Toyota only has a 36000 warranty

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
Have you looked at car reviews online at sites like Consumer Reports, Car and Driver, Edmunds, Kelly Blue Book, etc.. Also, check with family members, friends, and acquaintances as to the manufacturer of their cars for their opinion on the car company. There are more things to consider than features such as how much does it cost to repair, cost to insure, how good is/are the local dealership(s), etc...
Before I bought my current car back in 2007, I was originally looking at a sedan like the Toyota Avalon or a Honda Accord. A friend I bowl with traded-in her old Honda CR-V, a mini-SUV, for a new one (2007) and she showed it to me. I was impressed and went to a couple of dealers and test drove them. I ended up buying the CR-V instead of a sedan.
The key is to use all the resources available to you before you make a decision.

My big concern now is finding a dealer without dealer added options (DAO).
They are a huge ripoff. A wax job, nitrogen in tires, tinted glass. All for between $1500 and $3000.

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
Most of the parts are imported, plus the profits go overseas. And of course it’s all about cheap labor. Why else build in Mississippi?
Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
While the Corolla isn’t listed here it appears that the majority of Toyota parts for American assembled Toyotas are sourced from American manufacturers.

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
If you don't like what's on the lot, either go with a Fleet Dealership purchase or through a car buying company like Costco.
In the Fleet Dealership buy instead of buying a car off the lot you are ordering the car with the options you want and you can eliminate the DAO. The only drawback to this method is you have to wait for the car to be assembled to your order. I checked the Toyota and Kia websites and you can "build" your car and see what they'll cost.
In the car buying option, you tell the company the make, model, and the options you want and they'll get the price (lower than you can negotiate) from the local dealers. Again, if the car and its options you want aren't immediately available you'll have to wait for it to be assembled.
The main thing I don't like about car buying is haggling with the dealers. With new car inventory down, dealers have the upper hand when it comes to prices because of the limited availability new cars. I hate to haggle but what I did was to ask different dealers, and I'd let them know I'm checking with other dealers, their lowest offer. My brother-in-law loves to haggle and he has the patience to wear salesmen and their managers down. When my sister and brother-in-law bought their family van about 12 years they had already test driven the van and knew what they wanted. They went to the dealer at 5 pm and he kept haggling until they reached a deal at 10 pm even though the dealership "closed" at 9 pm.

Why anyone would buy from a dealership is beyond me.

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
Because for most people that's where the cars are. We've been programmed that you can only buy a new car from a dealer which is why most local media markets have a lot of car dealer ads. It's not until you or someone tells you to look into alternative buying methods that we see we really don't need dealerships to buy a car.

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
Mrs. Bird and I purchased at least 8 of our last 9 cars through Enterprise Car Sales. Mileage on them varied when we bought them from 25K to 40K. The last vehicle we purchased we actually bought through a dealer. It is a 2019 Toyota Sienna. I have bought minivans because I have to travel with my sales stuff and because I don’t fit in most cars that Detroit or foreign manufacturers make. The dealers at least around me have gone to no haggle pricing for used cars. While I had no problem with the Dodge Grand Caravan that I traded in the Sienna is more tightly built and finished. Again the Dodge was not bad but the Toyota was better. I do think that American cars have improved and I will probably look at American cars again when it comes time to make a change.

To get what you desire, I can see paying up and buying a vehicle from the lot.Number6 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 7:49 pm Because for most people that's where the cars are. Trading your old vehicle in to make it happen........No way.

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
I did look at a Pacifica. It was nice but it was also out of our price range at the time. I will certainly look at one again.
Of course, we will also be looking at hybrids/electric vehicles as well. Big thing is getting something I fit in and if we do a drive vacation I have be comfortable as I usually do most of the driving.
Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
If you can wait, then order a car to your specifications.
Selling it yourself can usually get you more than the dealer will offer. Another thing is to donate the vehicle to a worthy organization and take a tax deduction.Trading your old vehicle in to make it happen........No way.

It reminds me of a joke from the movie Get Shorty - “It’s the Cadillac of minivans!” It IS real nice, and has striking looks. The rear sets of seats fold down flat into the floor. I understand on the hybrid version they do not.bird wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 7:59 pm I did look at a Pacifica. It was nice but it was also out of our price range at the time. We have the van, a 2018, and I have a 2016 Explorer, both look and drive like new. Both have over 80,000 miles. My next vehicle will certainly be a hybrid, if not fully electric. I’m in no hurry, waiting for the technology to improve. I’d like to get a Lincoln.
Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
Most cars donated are on their last leg. You have to be fairly well off to donate a vehicle that is still worth it's money.
Trade a vehicle in and you lose some where around a grand or two.
But then... i can see where some don't want to go through the hassle of selling the old one and would rather have it done and over.

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
I do like the stow and go seating with the Chrysler products. That tech is patented, iirc. The rear seats of the Sienna fold flat but the only way to get flat for the second row is to actually remove that row. I used to do that with my old Chevy Astro van and GMC Safari. I loved those midsized vans but, boy those back rows were bulky and heavy to take out.gounion wrote: ↑Sun Oct 09, 2022 8:22 pm It reminds me of a joke from the movie Get Shorty - “It’s the Cadillac of minivans!” It IS real nice, and has striking looks. I get waiting on the electric technology to work out all the possible bugs. I saw something on Democratic Underground about EVs catching fire down in Floreida after Ian as the saltwater corroded the batteries. Apparently in one area 4 Teslas caught fire and it takes between 5K and 8K gallons of water to put out a battery fire. Gas engine fires, according to the article take about 1000 gallons of water to be extinguished.
As for a Lincoln that would be nice. I have always wanted a Bentley as my impossible dream car but a Lincoln or Caddy would work too.

If I trade in a car it is 100pct spent. In fact I often just give my old car to a friend or family member in need

The last two Chryslers I owned were junk. Now mind you that was over 25 years ago but, it turned me off to Chrysler.
As for their current lineup I don't believe they make a car under 24k that compares to the KIA or Toyota.
If I were in the market for a vehicle that was priced 40k or higher I would be looking at Chevrolet or Ford.

Re: Toyota or KIA Any suggestions
The funny thing is back in the 70s when I started selling cars what is standard equipment today was considered luxury items then.
About a third of the customers would custom order. Which was great for the salesman because you would have 10 to 25 cars in the bank after about 3 months. Beginning every month with 3 to 5 guaranteed deliveries.
