And people wonder why we don't trust the cops.

Sandra Bland recorded her own arrest. Watch her cellphone video from the 2015 traffic stop - WFAA

Quote:
The family of Sandra Bland -- who died in a Waller County jail cell -- is calling for a re-opening of the criminal investigation into Bland's arrest and death after seeing footage for the first time.

WALLER COUNTY, Texas — New cellphone footage from the now infamous traffic stop of Sandra Bland shows her perspective when a Texas state trooper points a Taser and yells, “I will light you up!”

Bland, 28, was found dead three days later in her Waller County jail cell near Houston. Her death was ruled a suicide.

The new video -- released as part of a WFAA exclusive in partnership with the Investigative Network -- fuels the Bland family’s suspicions that Texas officials withheld evidence in her controversial arrest and, later, her death.

Until now, the trooper’s dashcam footage was believed to be the only full recording of the July 2015 traffic stop, which ended in Bland’s arrest. The trooper claimed he feared for his safety during the stop.

The 39-second cellphone video shot by Bland remained in the hands of investigators until the Investigative Network obtained the video once the criminal investigation closed.

Officer instigated then lied about actions that led to shooting death of Oscar Grant, report says - CNN

Quote:
(CNN)An officer involved in the 2009 fatal shooting of Oscar Grant at the Fruitvale train station in Oakland, California, was responsible for instigating the events and escalating tensions in the encounter that preceded Grant's death, according to a newly released report.

The 10-year-old report -- recently released thanks to a new California police transparency law -- says that Bay Area Rapid Transit Officer Anthony Pirone "started a cascade of events that ultimately led to the shooting of Grant," and that he then lied about those events in an effort to put his own "actions and conduct in a more favorable light."

Pirone hit Grant and used profanity and the N-word during the incident, the report says, and later lied to investigators about Grant's actions, claiming he hit Pirone's partner and kicked Pirone in the groin.

But Pirone's account was directly contradicted by video evidence reviewed by investigators, the report says.

The report was written by a third-party law firm that was hired to conduct an internal affairs investigation that "examined and analyzed the conduct and performance" of the officers involved in the shooting death of Grant, a black 22-year-old father.

The New Year's Day 2009 shooting was captured on cellphone footage and prompted outrage and protests. It was also the basis for the 2013 movie "Fruitvale Station."

A jury found Johannes Mehserle, the officer who shot Grant, guilty of involuntary manslaughter in July 2010. The report also found evidence that contradicted Mehserle's claim at trial that he had intended to draw and fire his Taser at Grant, and not his gun.

But according to investigators, it was Pirone who, through his words and use of force, was "responsible for setting the events in motion that created a chaotic and tense situation on the platform, setting the stage, even if inadvertent, for the shooting of Oscar Grant."

Investigators ultimately suggested that Pirone be fired for his actions. BART spokesman James Allison confirmed in a statement to CNN that Pirone was "terminated soon after the investigation was finalized."

Pirone declined to comment when reached by CNN Saturday.

Officer hit Grant, used the N-word and lied to investigators
The report includes the interviews of numerous witnesses and multiple police officers, including Pirone.

Mehserle did not cooperate with the internal investigation and as a result was not interviewed, the report says.

Early in the morning on January 1, 2009, Pirone and his partner went to the Fruitvale station in response to reports of a fight on the train. Several men were taken off the train and lined up against a wall. Pirone then saw Grant walking between the train cars and used profanity to order him to get off the train.

Pirone told investigators he soon saw Grant "attacking" his partner. Pirone said he approached and Grant attempted to punch and kick him in the groin, to which Pirone thought "I've got a fight now." Pirone said he felt "like I'm fighting for my life at this point."

The report says none of this happened in the footage seen by investigators. They determined that Grant "did not appear to assault" Pirone's partner, and that Pirone grabbed Grant and pushed him against the wall before punching him in the head. "There is no indication that Grant kneed Pirone in the groin as he claims."

Later, Pirone forced Grant to sit back down before hitting Grant in the face with his left knee in an "unprovoked" attack. The autopsy would later suggest "the possible conclusion" that injuries Grant suffered to the face were due to the actions of Pirone, whose use of force, investigators wrote, "did not appear reasonable, justifiable or excusable."

Pirone admitted to using the N-word during the encounter, but said it was in response to Grant directing the word at the BART officer.

Regardless, investigators concluded, Pirone's repeated use of profanity and the N-word served only to escalate the already fraught tensions on the station platform. His use of the N-word "cannot, and should not, be excused, justified or go unpunished," the report says.

Niece of California rapper Willie McCoy accuses Vallejo police of excessive force - NBC News

Quote:
Police in Vallejo, California, are under fresh scrutiny over an officer's use of force after the niece of a Bay Area rapper who was fatally shot by members of the same department was tased last month during a traffic stop.

Cellphone videos from the incident, which police said occurred around midnight on April 16, were made public on YouTube this week. While the moment that driver Deyana Jenkins, the niece of rapper Willie McCoy, was tased is not visible, she could be heard in the background screaming, "I did not resist!"

Melissa Nold, a lawyer representing the McCoy family, said Tuesday that she plans to file a legal claim against the city signaling Jenkins' intent to sue.

...

To ease tension with the community, city officials last month said they were enlisting the help of mediators from the federal Department of Justice.

The same people actively obstructing justice to protect Donald Trump.

Swell.

Quote:
In this latest incident, Vallejo police said, a group of women in a Ford Focus were driving past officers at a traffic stop when they rolled down their passenger windows. The women were "making gestures like they held guns, and made popping noises" before driving off, police Lt. Herman Robinson told the Vallejo Times-Herald last month.

Officers then stopped the Focus, and the passengers inside became uncooperative, police said.

Sure, they did. :problem:

Quote:
The driver — identified as Jenkins, 20 — had no identification on her, Robinson said. As officers tried to detain her, "she became combative and ultimately had to be Tasered to be taken into custody," he added.

Sure, she did. :problem: :problem: :problem: :problem: :problem:

May 7, 1955: Murder of Rev. George W. Lee - Zinn Education Project

Quote:
Rev. George Washington Lee, one of the first African Americans registered to vote in Humphreys County, Mississippi since Reconstruction, used his pulpit and his printing press to urge others to vote.

Lee was head of the Belzoni, Mississippi NAACP. After countless threats against his life and demands that he remove his name from the voting rolls, Lee was murdered on May 7, 1955.

History News Network reports in “The Grim and Overlooked Anniversary of the Murder of Civil Rights Activist the Rev. George W. Lee“:

-In April, Lee was one of the speakers at the Council’s annual meeting, which drew a crowd of more than seven thousand to the all-black town of Mound Bayou. Simeon Booker of Jet, observed how Lee’s “down-home dialogue and his sense of political timing” had “electrified” the crowd. “Pray not for your mom and pop,” Lee suggested. “They’ve gone to heaven. Pray you can make it through this hell.”

-Less than a month after this speech, on May 7, 1955, a convertible pulled alongside Lee’s car just before midnight. An unidentified assailant fired three shot-gun blasts shattering his jaw and driving him off the road. Lee died before he could make it to the hospital. The attack came days after he had received a threatening note demanding that he drop his name from the voting rolls. An autopsy extracted lead pellets from his face that were consistent with buckshot. The sheriff, who wanted to call it a traffic accident and close the case, claimed that they were dental fillings torn loose by the impact of the crash.

Here is background about Lee from the Mississippi Civil Rights Project website:

Former Chicago police sergeant charged in gay club attack - WGN

Quote:
Eric Elkins faces aggravated battery charges in the Sept. 29 attack at a gay club last year. Authorities say the 45-year-old Elkins was off-duty with friends at the bar when he allegedly beat two men so badly they were hospitalized. Another man, 34-year-old Giovanni Rodriguez of Chicago, also faces similar felony charges.

Cook County Circuit Judge John F. Lyke Jr. on Tuesday set bond for Elkins at $250,000 with electronic monitoring. Bond for Rodriguez was set at $50,000. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Elkins resigned from the Chicago Police Department earlier this year. He now lives in Fort Lauderdale. He previously was charged in Michigan in 2016 with criminal sexual conduct involving a teenager. The sex charge was dropped and Elkins pleaded guilty to the lesser offense of disorderly conduct.

Prosecutors: Sheriff lied to FBI about jailing innocent man

Quote:
A South Carolina sheriff and two deputies angered by someone videotaping a police investigation jailed the man for three days, created a fake police report, took his cellphone and tried to destroy it and lied to the FBI, according to federal indictments.

Chester County Sheriff Alex Underwood, his Chief Deputy Robert Sprouse and sheriff’s Lt. Johnny Neal Jr. were charged Tuesday with several counts ranging from civil rights violations to lying to police.

Underwood and his deputies kept the man in jail for three days without a reason, prosecutors said. They added that authorities then lied about a missing police radio to get a warrant to get inside the man’s home and had a deputy call the man’s number so they could locate his cellphone.

The deputies then created a false police report, which they gave to FBI agents and which said the man stepped out of his yard into the public roadway and cursed at police, according to the indictments.

‘You don’t know my name, so how can you tell me I have an open warrant?’ — This officer tried to arrest a Black father in front of his own home after incorrectly identifying him as a suspected criminal from another state

This man could have easily lost his life in a millisecond. I love all the comments from people that he should have remained calm, knowing full well if the same thing happened to them they would be the last people to "remain calm." You can tell the comments also do not come from people whose lives or kids' lives are in existential danger from interactions like this.

Classic DV/gaslighting mentality: be nice to him and smile a little more. Then he'll stop, see.

Also, this cop has already made the news for police brutality. Imagine my shock.

Cop accused of kicking handcuffed suspect in the head - ABC 13

Quote:
He refused to talk to Eyewitness News as he left an arbitration hearing Monday afternoon. He was placed on indefinite suspension by the police department in July and now has been indicted by a grand jury. He stands accused of official oppression.

Nicole DeBorde, Lindley's attorney, said, ""Yes, he (denies kicking that person.) He didn't hurt anyone. He was trying to help fellow officers and that's it."

Eric Faltesek was under arrest for DWI in January. He'd refused a breathalyzer test and was ignoring officer commands in a room at 61 Riesner. Police say they were trying to get his fingerprint on a warrant so that they could properly document a blood draw. Officer Jorge Roman says that's when Faltesek became combative.

Sure, he did.

Lying Cops....I wish I could I was shocked. However it's Tuesday and this ain't new.

Everybody lies, justme. Cops don't lie any more than anybody else. Democrats lie just as often as Republicans. Women lie just as often as men (regardless of the sexual orientation of either).

Politicians lie, corporate executives lie, farmers lie, doctors lie, factory workers lie, Trump lies (probably more than anybody else on earth), Obama lies as well. I had a boss one time when I was a young guy, he was a fairly successful entrepreneur, who was a pathological liar. He lied when there was absolutely no benefit to him to lie...he just couldn't not lie. He was a small potatoes Trump.

It was amazing to me when I first got into the mental health business, now many people, under the protection of confidentiality, would just sit in session and admit to lying about almost anything one could think of. I suspect lawyers have much the same experience, they just do different things with it than social workers do. And guess what, so do counselors (legal and clinical ones).

Cook County Takes Steps to Erase Its Regional Gang Database - ProPublica

Quote:
Over the years, a gang database maintained by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office grew to include more than 25,000 names, as well as countless errors.

Now it’s on the verge of being dismantled.

No doubt. :problem:

Quote:
Last July, the sheriff’s office released a partial copy of its regional gang database after I submitted an open-records request. As I reported, the data included about 25,000 entries, including hundreds of people listed as dead and others with no gang affiliation, though that was supposedly why they were in the system. More than 350 police departments and other outside agencies had access to the information, yet people in the database were not offered an opportunity to address or correct it.

Great. Swell.

Alameda County District Attorney releases records from lurid police sexual misconduct cases - Merc

I have clients and a lot of friends in Alameda County

Quote:
OAKLAND – As the state Supreme Court ponders how California’s new police transparency law affects records that prosecutors keep on cops’ credibility to testify in court, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday released some of those long-secret files, including records on officers charged with sexual assault and dishonesty.

The DA’s office released records involving eight former police officers found to be newly disclosable under Senate Bill 1421, the state’s new police transparency law. The records include a 2007 case in which a Hayward officer went to prison for having sexual contact with underage boys, a 2013 bribery case, and a 2017 case in which charges were dropped against an officer alleged to have had sex with a 17-year-old girl he met through a youth program.

...

In 2017, San Leandro Police Officer Marco Becerra, then 26, was arrested and charged for having unlawful sex with a 17-year-old girl he met through the Police Explorers program, where he was an adviser. The Explorers is a youth program for teens interested in a law enforcement career. The investigation found that Becerra had sex with the teen at least six times in various locations that included the San Leandro Marina and in his mother’s car. They also exchanged sexually explicit text messages in which the victim referred to Becerra as “Officer Big Bird” and “Daddy”.

Prosecutors later dropped the charges, saying the victim didn’t want to cooperate. But documents released Tuesday show the victim did speak with investigators and even went so far as to tape phone conversations with Becerra in which he admitted knowing her age.

Another case involved former Oakland Police Officer Ryan Walterhouse, who told an exploited teenage sex worker who went by the name Celeste Guap about an undercover prostitution operation planned in Oakland. The case was part of a wide-ranging 2016 sex scandal that rocked several Bay Area police departments.

Walterhouse was eventually charged for his involvement with a different prostitute. The DA’s newly released documents indicate that the sex worker’s pimp provided the information to Oakland criminal investigators. The pimp, who is referred to as “X” in the document, told police that the prostitute who was involved with Walterhouse “has the key to the City right now.”

The documents also show Walterhouse used the Venmo app to transfer $200 to the prostitute, allegedly for oral sex. But prosecutors ultimately dropped charges against the officer after questions were raised about the witnesses’ credibility.

The other Brady records released by the Alameda County DA include:

• A 2013 case in which Hayward officer Romero Aberin extorted money from a woman he was investigating, after he tried to make her a confidential informant.

• A 2007 case involving San Leandro Police officer Greg Cannedy, who pulled over and stalked a woman he wanted to have sex with.

• A 2007 case involving Jeffrey Cristofani, a Hayward officer who was criminally charged with having sex with underage boys.

• A 2007 case involving former Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Records, who beat up a man who was trying to dance with a female friend at a nightclub. Records fractured the orbital bone in the man’s right eye.

• A 2004 case against Hayward Officer Jose Nunez, who pleaded no contest to false imprisonment.

Every case is ertainly it's own carmen, with it's own specifics, it's own inequities or benefits.

Here in Chicago we have the case of a 14 year old gangbanger wannabe with 16 rior arrests who shot two innocent people on an "L" platform. One of them is in the hospital in critical condition...and the judge releases the vicious little shit without bail without electronic ankle bracelet monitoring to his mother...who says he's a good boy. There are eight million stories in the naked city.

And everybody lies.

Everybody lies, whilst some little shits lie whilst in uniform with a gun and a badge, with state/government institutions and tax $$$ backing them, and having personal histories of documented in-uniform brutality, and abuse. This behavior is a longstanding, institutionalized aspect of policing on its own, and that distinguishes these particular lies from "everybody". That's what this thread is about.

Ex-Chicago police commander pleads guilty to stealing $363,000 from Social Security after mother's death - Tribune

Quote:
A former Chicago police commander who earned praise for overseeing big reductions in violence in the Englewood community pleaded guilty Tuesday to stealing more than $360,000 in Social Security payments intended for his mother that he continued to collect after her death 25 years ago.

In all, Kenneth Johnson admitted to bilking the Social Security Administration out of $363,064 from the time of his mother’s death in May 1994 to November 2017, when the scheme was uncovered, according to his plea agreement with prosecutors.

Preliminary guidelines call for Johnson to be sentenced to up to about two years in prison for the felony conviction on one count of theft of government funds. U.S. District Judge Manish Shah set sentencing for Sept. 11.

Dressed in a gray suit and wearing eyeglasses, Johnson, 55, kept his hands clasped behind his back in court as Shah asked him if he understood his legal rights and the possible penalties he faces.

When the judge asked him how he wanted to proceed, Johnson replied softly, “I want to plead guilty, your honor.”

Yeah? Well fuck you. Cop.

Vallejo Cops are the worst. There is no oversight. For them it is the wild west.

Vallejo cop wanted to ‘educate’ a bicyclist about road safety. Why then did he kill the man? - Chron

Quote:
He was riding his bicycle. At night. Without lights.

McMahon told police investigators that he wanted to stop Foster “to educate the public on the dangers that this person was creating for himself and the traffic on Sonoma Boulevard,” according to a copy of his interview with the investigators that the city released this week.

All McMahon wanted, as he tells it, was a teaching moment with a citizen. But the citizen kept riding away, then running away and wouldn’t listen to McMahon’s commands to stop, McMahon told investigators.

Not too long before this “traffic stop,” another police officer had shared an article with McMahon about how suspects position themselves before they attack cops — they “blade their stance,” according to the interview. And he began thinking this is exactly what Foster was doing, he told investigators. He also began thinking Foster had a gun. Foster didn’t have a gun.

McMahon had a gun though. He also had a Taser, a flashlight and pepper spray.

And after he chased Foster into a dark alley, Foster took a tumble. McMahon fired his Taser but that didn’t incapacitate Foster, he told investigators. So, he hit Foster no more than five times with his flashlight.

Foster, meanwhile, was yelling something along the lines of, “What the f—? What are you doing?” McMahon told investigators.

“McMahon then indicated he did not know exactly what the suspect was saying, but he knew that he was not happy,” the investigator’s report says.

The biggest gangbangers in town...really? Not by the body count. In the five year period between 2010 and 2015 Chicago cops shot and killed 70 people. That's 14 a year. Calendar year 2016 there were 762 homicides in the city of Chicago...61% of them using firearms, that's 464 gun homicides. The figure given for how many of the gun homicides are gang related is typically right around 80%...which puts the number of gangbanger homicides for 2016 right at 372.

That's 14 cop gangbanger gun killings vs 372 neighborhood gangbanger gun killings. Over a five year period, 70 cop gangbanger killings and averaging out the neighborhood gangbanger numbers for the same period, right around 1,500. Seems to me the the cops are a long way from the biggest gangbangers in my town.

We still spend a lot of time talking about Laquan McDonald in this city. But reckon how many people have actually read the full timeline on what poor little Laquan was up to all night before a bad, racist fucking cop put 16 holes in him, instead of tazing his ass or cracking his head open with a nightstick. Because it seems to a lot of us that Laquan McDonald was out in the street with his knife looking for some really bad trouble on October 14, 2014...and he found it.

Jason VanDyke? He should be in prison for the rest of his life.

He should be; a lot of them should be. But they won't be.

We found 85,000 cops who’ve been investigated for misconduct. Now you can read their records. - USA Today

Klassy fellers.

Quote:
At least 85,000 law enforcement officers across the USA have been investigated or disciplined for misconduct over the past decade, an investigation by USA TODAY Network found.

Officers have beaten members of the public, planted evidence and used their badges to harass women. They have lied, stolen, dealt drugs, driven drunk and abused their spouses.

Despite their role as public servants, the men and women who swear an oath to keep communities safe can generally avoid public scrutiny for their misdeeds.

The records of their misconduct are filed away, rarely seen by anyone outside their departments. Police unions and their political allies have worked to put special protections in place ensuring some records are shielded from public view, or even destroyed.

Reporters from USA TODAY, its 100-plus affiliated newsrooms and the nonprofit Invisible Institute in Chicago have spent more than a year creating the biggest collection of police misconduct records.

Obtained from thousands of state agencies, prosecutors, police departments and sheriffs, the records detail at least 200,000 incidents of alleged misconduct, much of it previously unreported. The records obtained include more than 110,000 internal affairs investigations by hundreds of individual departments and more than 30,000 officers who were decertified by 44 state oversight agencies.

Cop unions, the FOP, the only unions white nationalists and other cons like.

What you need to know about credibility of testimony by Iowa police

A handful of Iowa police officers have changed their testimony, lied to avoid professional discipline or filed inaccurate police reports, prompting required disclosure of these credibility issues before they can testify in court, a Des Moines Register investigation has found.

Prosecutors have a constitutional obligation to disclose evidence that's favorable to a defendant, including information about an officer’s credibility that may assist in an accused criminal’s defense.
