Poland: Bill allowing judges to be punished signed into law

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish President Andrzej Duda on Tuesday signed into law much-criticized legislation that gives politicians the power to fine and fire judges whose actions and decisions they consider harmful.

The legislation has drawn condemnation from the European Union and international human rights organizations as well as from Poland's opposition and some judges. They say it violates the basic democratic values of judicial independence and the system of checks and balances and puts judges under political control.

Federal judge reverses convictions of border humanitarian aid volunteers

The Trump administration’s yearslong taxpayer-funded mission to criminalize humanitarian aid at the southern U.S. border continues to be rebuked in the courts, with a federal judge on Monday reversing the convictions of four workers who had been charged for their actions volunteering with No More Deaths, the humanitarian aid group whose sole mission has been to prevent agonizing migrant deaths in the border desert.

The Tucson Sentinel reports that Natalie Hoffman, Oona Holcomb, Madeline Huse, and Zaachila Orozco-McCormick had been found guilty of federal misdemeanors early last year for their work leaving water and other lifesaving supplies in the searing desert, Hoffman “for operating a motor vehicle in a wilderness area and entering a national refuge without a permit while Holcomb, Huse, and Orozco-McCormick were found guilty of entering without a permit and abandonment of property.”

Former L.A. Country Sheriff Lee Baca reports to prison to begin a three year sentence for corruption.

Quote:
Former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca has reported to prison to begin serving a three-year prison sentence for a corruption conviction, according to federal records.

Agents had been secretly looking into allegations of bribery and inmate beatings by jail guards in 2011, when Baca and his top lieutenants learned that an inmate was acting as an FBI informant.

Baca and top brass hatched an elaborate plot to hide the informant in the jail system by booking him under false names and moving him to different locations. They also tried to intimidate an FBI agent by threatening to arrest her.

Their interference scuttled the investigation into civil rights abuses by guards but exposed corruption among the highest ranks of the department, snaring Baca and his top lieutenant.

Six women of color leave Warren campaign in Nevada: report

Six women of color left Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-Mass.) Nevada team after complaints of racial insensitivity within the campaign, Politico reported Thursday.

The departures have happened over the course of several months starting in November, according to the news outlet. Nevada is known for its large Latino population in contrast to other early primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire. The Nevada primary takes place February 22, a week before Super Tuesday on March 3.

DOJ dropping antitrust probe into automakers

BREAKING: The Department of Justice (DOJ) is dropping its investigation into four major automakers that sided with California over the Trump administration on emissions standards, a person familiar with the matter confirmed to The Hill.

The probe, announced in September, focused on BMW, Ford, Volkswagen and Honda and examined whether the companies violated the law by agreeing to follow stricter emissions standards advocated by California rather than ones determined by the Trump administration.

Judge upholds Maryland ban on pet stores' sale of cats, dogs

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — A federal judge on Friday threw out a lawsuit that challenged Maryland's newly enacted ban on the sale of dogs and cats by retail pet stores, a statute billed as a check against unlicensed and unsanitary "puppy mills."

Four pet stores, a dog breeder and a dog broker sued in August to block the law, which took effect Jan. 1. Maryland was the second state after California to pass such restrictions on the sale of dogs and cats.

A dozen Marines have been less-than-honorably discharged as a result of human trafficking and drug-related offenses dating back to July 2019.

Twenty-four Marines were arrested during battalion formation at Camp Pendleton on July 25, 2019, accused of illegal activities.

Van plows into GOP voter registration tent in Florida

A Florida man plowed with his van into a voter-registration tent full of Trump supporters, scattering the volunteers before giving them the finger and speeding off, police in Jacksonville said.

“Today in Jacksonville, Florida six Trump Campaign volunteers were intentionally targeted while registering voters,” the Republican Party of Duval County tweeted late Saturday afternoon, along with photos of the trashed tent.

Trump eliminates 70 positions inherited from Obama — including roles on the NSC: report

President Donald Trump’s decision to fire Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman and Gordon Sondland (U.S. ambassador to the European Union) on Friday, February 7 has been dubbed the Friday Night Massacre — a name inspired by President Richard Nixon’s infamous Saturday Night Massacre of the 1970s. Never Trump conservative Max Boot, in his Washington Post column, predicted that the Friday Night Massacre was only the beginning — and sure enough, the right-wing Washington Examiner is reporting that a lot more firings are taking place. According to the Examiner’s Paul Bedard, Trump and National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien have decided to cut “70 positions inherited from former President Barack Obama” — including positions in the National Security Council (NSC).

Bedard quotes John Ullyot, senior director of strategic communications at the NSC, as saying, “This month, we will complete the right-sizing goal Ambassador O’Brien outlined in October, and in fact, may exceed that target by drawing down even more positions.”

Philippines Duterte deals blow to U.S. by terminating troop pact

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday terminated a two-decade-old Visiting Forces Agreement with the United States (VFA) delivering on threats to downgrade an alliance crucial to U.S. interests.

The mercurial Duterte, who has clashed with the former colonial ruler over several issues, has decided to pull the plug on the two-decade troop rotation pact to enable the Philippines to be more independent with its relations with other countries, spokesman Salvador Panelo said.

Uber loses early challenge to California gig-worker law

Uber Technologies failed to persuade a judge to shield its drivers from California’s gig-worker protection law while the company challenges the landmark measure in court.

A federal judge in Los Angeles rejected a request by Uber and Postmates to temporarily block enforcement of Assembly Bill 5, which aims to convert gig-economy workers from independent contractors to employees with benefits. Uber and Postmates didn’t ask the judge to shield other companies from the law.
