The $578 million megayacht owned by Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko was seized by Italy

A megayacht belonging to Russian oligarch Andrey Melnichenko was seized by Italian authorities on Friday, CNN reported.

A statement from Italy's finance police said the yacht, known as SY A or Sailing Yacht A, was worth around 530 million euros, or $578 million, according to CNN. It also said the yacht was currently in storage in Trieste, Italy. Maritime tracking data viewed by Insider confirmed the location of the yacht in the Adriatic Sea.

Something to consider when news media reduce serious world issues to sensationalism and bickering and spend their time resources and efforts to misinform, disinform, and confuse the public. What they are squandering.

US journalist Brent Renaud killed
....Arredondo, 46, told Italian journalist Annalisa Camilli in an interview from a hospital that the two men were filming refugees fleeing the area when their car rolled up to a checkpoint and the Russians began shooting. He said Renaud was shot in the neck.

“Of course, the profession of journalism carries risks," police said in a statement. "Nonetheless, U.S. citizen Brent Renaud paid with his life trying to highlight the deceit, cruelty and ruthlessness of the aggressor.”

Renaud, 50, and his brother Craig frequently collaborated on film and television projects. They covered wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the earthquake in Haiti, political turmoil in Egypt and Libya, extremism in Africa, cartel violence in Mexico and the youth refugee crisis in Central America, according to their website......

Indeed, there's definitely much to consider.

American journalist killed in Ukraine
https://www.axios.com/american-journali ... 571fb.html

[snip]

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told CBS the killing is "obviously shocking and horrifying ... I just learned about it as I came on the air here." Sullivan said, adding that the U.S. will be consulting with Ukraine to "measure and execute appropriate consequences."

"I will just say that this is part and parcel of what has been a brazen aggression on the part of the Russians where they have targeted civilians, they have targeted hospitals, they have targeted places of worship and they have targeted journalists."

[snip]

The big picture: The war presents an enormous risk for journalists, both in Ukraine and Russia.

A Ukrainian camera operator was killed when a TV tower was shelled last week.

Russian forces opened fire on Western journalists from Sky News last week.

The Times said it would pull all of its journalists out of Russia last week, given the threat of a new fake news law, but it kept journalists on the ground covering the war in Ukraine, as did other news organizations.

[snip]

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of the death of U.S. journalist Brent Renaud in Ukraine. This kind of attack is totally unacceptable, and is a violation of international law,” said Carlos Martinez de la Serna, a program director at the Committee to Protect Journalists.

“Russian forces in Ukraine must stop all violence against journalists and other civilians at once, and whoever killed Renaud should be held to account.”

Time in a statement said it was devastated by the loss of Renaud, who "was in the region working on a TIME Studios project focused on the global refugee crisis."

[snip][end]

Russia passed a law saying all those reporting "fake news" can be sentenced to prison for 15 years, unfortunately there seems to be a very Trumpian definition of same, as apparently anything that contradicts the Kremlin can be defined as such.

There has been other evidence they may be aggressively targeting journalists in Ukraine. What I consider is this seems to be part of this same strategy of information war. It is yet another violation of international law to target journalists in a war.

Russian airstrike hits base in western Ukraine, kills 35

LVIV, Ukraine (AP) — Waves of Russian missiles pounded a military training base near Ukraine’s western border with NATO member Poland, killing 35 people, Ukrainian authorities said Sunday. The strike followed Russian threats to target foreign weapon shipments that are helping Ukrainian fighters defend their country against Russia's grinding assault.

More than 30 Russian cruise missiles targeted the sprawling training facility that is less than 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the closest border point with Poland, according to the governor of Ukraine’s western Lviv region. Poland is a transit route for Western military aid to Ukraine, and the United States increased the number of America troops deployed there.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address all members of Congress on Wednesday morning, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced.

https://www.politico.com/news/2022/03/1 ... y-00016966

Zelenskyy will update the House and Senate on the brutal Russian invasion of his nation just days after Congress sent roughly $14 billion in lethal and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Pelosi and Schumer said in a letter to lawmakers that “Congress remains unwavering in our commitment to supporting Ukraine as they face Putin’s cruel and diabolical aggression,” including additional legislation targeting Russia and assisting Ukraine.

Another journalist targeted in Ukraine. BTW, I would not say just because he works for Faux makes him fair game. NO journalists (that are the real thing, not BS artists) should be targeted.

Surprise, surprise, Tulsi Gabbard and Glenn Greenwald are on this BS train.

A New Right-Wing Conspiracy Theory With The Same Old Cast Of Characters
Anthony Fauci reemerges as the central villain in propaganda-fueled conspiracy theorizing about Ukrainian biolabs.
https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/qano ... ne-biolabs

This blossomed into a full-fledged conspiracy theory that Russian President Vladmir Putin, often assisted by Trump, is really just trying to destroy those labs where the U.S. and Ukraine are developing lethal bioweapons. Trump, the most prolific hero of these stories, may have even been warning us for months in code. QAnoners believe that Fauci, specifically, is using the labs to cook up a sequel to the COVID-19 virus — perhaps, as the Kremlin itself recently suggested, a bird flu. Something bad and infectious, at any rate.

[snip]

In the exchange, characterized by Greenwald, Alex Jones and Fox News host Tucker Carlson as a bombshell, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) asked Nuland whether Ukraine has chemical or biological weapons.

“Ukraine has biological research facilities, which, In fact, we are now quite concerned Russian troops, Russian forces, may be seeking to gain control of,” she said. “So, we are working with the Ukrainians on how they can prevent any of those research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces should they approach.”

This was tantamount to a full-throated admission by the administration for those buying the conspiracy theory. Her concern about Russian forces taking control of the facilities, Greenwald and Carlson posit, is proof-positive that these labs harbor weapons or materials to make them.

Considering how Bidens foreign policy fits together in the now, Venezuela sanctions, Ukraine with NATO on Russia's doorstep, and putting nuclear submarines in Australian waters at the footstep of China. All good for empire and hubris and coerced forced contracts and profits for a few but very bad for diplomacy and world peace.

‘Good luck with that’: Governor responds to Russian lawmaker demanding US give back Alaska
https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/g ... ck-alaska/

(NEXSTAR) – A Russian lawmaker has reportedly demanded America return Alaska to his country amid U.S.-led sanctions against Russia. He also asked for Fort Ross, located in California, as part of his requested “return of all Russian properties.”

Speaking on an evening talk show Sunday, Oleg Matveychev, a member of the Russian parliament, listed off his country’s future demands, The Daily Beast reports.

“We should be thinking about reparations from the damage that was caused by the sanctions and the war itself, because that too costs money and we should get it back,” Matveychev reportedly said. “The return of all Russian properties, those of the Russian empire, the Soviet Union and current Russia, which has been seized in the United States, and so on.”

Canada and US announce Arctic military exercises amid Russia tensions

Canada and the US have issued a rare public notice over planned military exercises in the Arctic amid growing concern over Russian aggression.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command said on Tuesday that it would hold air defence exercises throughout the Canadian Arctic, adding that the drills were meant to test the ability to “respond to both aircraft and cruise missiles” threatening the continent.

So, this morning, Vlad is now again nattering about how he's trying to prevent genocide, while basically committing war crimes against civilians in various cities ... I swear, the Russians are masters of gaslighting.

Some interesting stats: 90% of Mariupol has been leveled and flattened.

The Russians have now lost 7000 soldiers, which is more than the U.S. lost in Iraq & Afghanistan wars over 20 yrs., combined.

Biden is telling Xi not to provide assistance to Vlad's maladventure. It's in Xi's own interest to listen, I hope he does.

Putin praises Russian ‘unity’ at rally as glitch cuts state TV broadcast
President’s five-minute address to flag-waving crowd re-aired from start after ‘technical failure’
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/ ... is-cut-off

Vladimir Putin has praised Russian “unity” over what the Kremlin is calling its special operation in Ukraine during a rare public speech in the Moscow stadium that hosted the 2018 men’s football World Cup final.

“The country hasn’t seen unity like this in a long time,” Putin said, addressing a large flag-waving crowd on Friday from a stage decked out with slogans such as “For a world without Nazism” and “For our president”. (*)

As Putin was finishing his speech, the broadcast was suddenly cut off and state television showed patriotic songs performed earlier in the day by the popular Russian musician Oleg Gazmanov. Soon afterwards, Putin’s speech, which lasted about five minutes, was re-aired from the start, with the Russian leader ending his speech and walking off stage.

[snip]

The event officially marked the eighth anniversary of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, but many of the speeches were intended to rally the country behind the current invasion of Ukraine. Moscow police said more than 200,000 people were in and around the Luzhniki Stadium, Russia’s national venue which also hosted the 1980 Olympics and Manchester United’s defeat of Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League final.

[snip]

Reuters and a number of Russian outlets reported that state employees had been ordered to attend. Several Telegram channels reported that students and employees of state institutions were also told by their superiors to attend.

Russia has a long history of state employees being coerced to attend pro-government rallies.

[snip]

Pan-Slavist poetry by Fyodor Tyutchev, whose verses warned Russians that Europeans would consider them slaves of the Enlightenment, was read out.

The OVD-Info rights group which monitors political arrests reported that at least seven independent journalists had been detained ahead of or while covering the event or a similar one in St Petersburg.

[snip][end]

Talking about a world without Nazism while literally chanting, if in Russian, ... oh and repeating that anyone who doesn't support his war of conquest is a traitor.

Some BBC pundit has proclaimed the end of the post Cold War order.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60767454

The British writer goes a bit farther with this thesis than I would, since I have a certain distrust of explaining all of history with one sweeping generalization. Even so, I think he's onto something.

1. Global nuclear war is back. It never went away, actually, but there was this idea that we could just let all the nukes sit there, and no rational leader would ever actually use them. This of course has two major fallacies. (1) Who ever said that every world leader would be rational? (2) The current state of strategic armament makes war by miscalculation, where some bluff goes wrong, or something else goes awry, close to a certainty. Denial won't help. Time to fix this.

2. We're finally seeing the last of the world trade con job. It was always the manifestation of a global oligarchy getting its act together at the expense of 7 billion other people, and it built a lot of beach resorts, ski lodges, executive hideaways, and walled mansions in the great capitals and the tourist attractions of the world. It also stripped work of its dignity, enslaved much of the population, and led to an extreme and obscene maldistribution of wealth. These never end well. As we see, this one isn't either. The New World Order of the Bushes, the Carlyle Group, Putin's crowd, the oil cartel, the tech boys' club, the media brainwashing industry, et al has become the Bad World Odor. It's collapsing. Our job is to make the collapse relatively painless, with the least suffering for the most people.

3. Conservatives get this, on a nonverbal level, and their reaction will continue to be that of a scared kid who doesn't understand why their friends grew up and they didn't. Unconsciously, they'll be doing a process that goes something like, " Why can't everything just be like it was when war was good for the economy and Those People knew their place?" They will hang onto whatever scraps history leaves them. Why can't everything just be like it was? They'll cause a lot of sound and fury, and a huge amount of bad feeling, but their effect on history will be only temporary. Their era ended when Putin invaded Ukraine.
