they do a lot of giving of time and money but in increments to small to make a difference, accept for the hero coming to the rescue fetish and taking credit for caring. it sure isnt reflected in our economy or tax policy in a meaningful way.

"Ask your doctor about.....". No thanks. I trust her to know what meds I should and should not take.

All these arm chair specialists who know nothing about medicine should just STFU!!!!.

I had one person who thought they knew all about allergies tell me I should try some newly advertised nasal inhalant. Turns out it contained an active mold and I am allergic mold. I told her that and she just looked at me. "All I said was to try it," she says. "If I try it, it might kill me", I told her. "Trying it just once would not hurt."

Kinda eating raw tomato would not hurt me either, except the hives and full blown coughing fit.

Prescription drug ads made TV unwatchable for me. I thought soft drink ads were the worst propaganda on, but that was a more innocent time.

Biggest mistake in terms of TV content was letting prescription drugs advertise. Cindy Lauper hawking psoriasis medicine that takes 45 seconds to read off the side effects. "Some have experienced incurable infections, loss of body parts, or death. SEE ME!"

Second biggest was letting lawyers advertise. "Do YOU have mesothelioma? Call 1--800-SO-SUE-ME for a free booklet on why you should hire some ambulance chaser who paid us to get on our list."

As if TV wasn't vile enough already.

Then there's giggly morning TV. Publicity is really a pretty nifty way to make a living, but the worst part is having to watch WAKE UP AND BE STOOPID first thing in the morning if there's a segment coming up that you arranged to make some client actually look newsworthy. There was one this morning. I do not know how anyone can actually watch this stuff. I feel my IQ going down every time it's on. A daily diet of that, and I'd be voting for people who have promised to raise my taxes and cut everything else.

And now there's net streaming. And we just gave the big players control of that. And social media. Which one political faction has turned into Russian agitprop.

Be very afraid.

I wonder if there's ever been a study or poll on what doctors think about the drug companies advertising on TV. I suppose they'd be against it because they probably have patients coming in and asking them about the drug they saw on TV and the doctor has to waste time explaining why that particular drug isn't right for them or that a generic drug will do the same thing. Doctors have a lot of reading to do to keep up with the latest procedure, studies, and drugs as well as spending time with drug reps peddling their products.

My doctor tells me that she can't stand the pharma spots. Just as you said, she complains about the patients asking for drugs they know nothing about. She said that there have been patients who asked about drugs that have nothing to do with their conditions. "As Seen On TV!!!"

I shake my head at the ads for lawyers regarding blood thinners. I take Xarelto because my inr numbers got way out of whack and couldn't be controlled with Warfarin anymore.

I think the worst drug is the asthma drug that says a potential side effect is death from asthma. WTF?

This country is completely phucqued up.

Regarding "as seen on tv" that gave us Ronald Reagan and the current shithead occupying the WH.

My brother, the family practice MD, tells me when patients ask him about some drug on TV, his usual response is to ask them if they are aware of the cheaper, generic alternative, which is often just as good.

Yeah, that they've never seen in a TV ad, to ask their doctor about.

Pharma ads are a bit strange. Presumably, if your doctor is well-trained enough, he doesn't need you to ask him about the appropriate medication for your diagnosis (and situation). Of course, the big problem is up until recently, his decision-making might have been a bit affected by certain drug reps taking him on junkets all over the country. Recent regulations have banned most of that crap. Said brother thinks these have gone too far, now he even has to be careful about taking free samples from them.

I do like the warnings in those ads. "Don't take Zylophil if you are allergic to Zylophil." Um. Duh? Secondly, how would you know until after you first took it?

Yeah, and you should be a bit cautious if one of the listed side effects is "death".

I am waiting for a side effect like this: Will grow a third hand out of your forehead.

The whole issue of junkets and such has expanded. I sell protective coatings and linings into the municipal market. Our company does "Lunch and Learns" for engineering firms to tell them about our products. Some engineering firms will not let us pay for the lunch that is brought in because of the perception of quid pro quo.

Being a medical supply guy in the AF, we had the problem of pharmaceutical reps coming to see our doctors and getting them to try free samples of their drugs which weren't on the pharmacy's formulary. We got our commander to implement a policy requiring all pharma reps to report to our office first for a short briefing on what they can and cannot do and to sign memorandum of understanding before they were allowed to see our doctors. Among the things they couldn't do was give out free samples of drugs. They couldn't offer them gifts, incentives, trips, etc. nor could the doctors obligate the government to anything. About the only thing they could give them were pens, scratch pads, coffee mugs, and the usual merchandise with the company's logo of product printed upon them. The policy worked well because the doctors wouldn't see a rep unless they had a signed copy of our MOR and it didn't take long for the reps to learn our doctors didn't make the decision as to what drugs the pharmacy carried.
