Charles Djou: Why I’m Leaving The GOP

Today, after much consideration, I abandon my party because I am unwilling to abandon my principles. I can no longer stand with a Republican Party that is led by a man I firmly believe is taking the party of Lincoln in a direction I fundamentally disagree with, and a party that is unwilling to stand up to him.

Self-driving Uber strikes, kills woman crossing road in Tempe

Quote:
........Uber has not confirmed the vehicle was in autonomous mode, but said that its operations of self-driving cars have been "paused," similar to how the company temporarily shut down operations following previous accidents.

Uber has been carrying customers in the self-driving cars in limited parts of Tempe and Scottsdale.

"Our hearts go out to the victim’s family," Uber said on Twitter. "We’re fully cooperating with @TempePolice and local authorities as they investigate this incident.".......

Why did you put this one in the bye thread? This isn't bye to Uber or to self driving cars.

It's bye to the woman but I wouldn't, and I don't think you would put it that way. It's a shame she was killed.

I was pretty pessimistic a few years ago about these cars, I didn't think the computers were fast enough yet to tackle it. But they've been doing better than I expected. There have been mishaps but they're demonstrating that they can drive as well as a human, and they're still in the development phase. There's real potential here to vastly improve highway safety and save thousands of lives a year.

I've got to agree with you on this one in that it shouldn't be on this thread. The woman who died was a victim.

I've got to agree with you on this one in that it shouldn't be on this thread. The woman who died was a victim.

The victim was a homeless woman and the self driving car was speeding doing 40 in a 35 mph zone

Uber self-driving car kills a pedestrian. Could this happen where I live?

Quote:
.............The victim, Elaine Herzberg, 49, stepped into the street well away from a crosswalk as the Uber car approached in self-driving mode at around 40 mph. The woman, who was homeless, died from her injuries at a hospital............

Quote:
........."There are clearly incentives to being as welcoming as possible, because when some states added hurdles (for example, California's Department of Motor Vehicles requires self-driving permit holders to report accidents), companies just left for a more friendly state," says Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Cox Automotive.

Uber moved to Arizona after California's DMV said the company didn't have proper permits to test.

But the death in Arizona, which caused Uber to halt all of its self-driving operations while the incident is investigated, is likely to at least give lawmakers pause as they weigh the benefits of embracing new technology with the concerns of citizens.

"Everyone's going to stop and look at what's going on with autonomous car testing now," says Brauer. ............

Classic case of "well, that escalated quickly." She has a nasty history of outing LGBTQ students at Dartmouth. Not only that, David Hogg put up that tweet not even 24 hours ago. She issued an apology this morning. But it's not stopping the bleeding.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer steaming heap of white conservative-Christian garbage. :problem:
