Steve King removed from committee assignments following racist comments - CNN

Quote:
Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa has been stripped of committee assignments following racist comments he made to The New York Times in a report published last week, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced Monday.

McCarthy announced that the House Republican Steering Committee -- which oversees committee assignments -- met Monday night and made a decision that King "will not be serving on committees in this Congress."

Earlier Monday, a pair of the Senate's most high-profile Republicans on Monday sharply condemned King, the highest ranking GOP officials to publicly rebuke King after comments he made to The New York Times that were sympathetic to white supremacists.

The criticism from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Utah freshman Sen. Mitt Romney, comes as the House plans to vote as soon as Tuesday on a resolution to disapprove of the actions of King, who has a history of making incendiary comments related to race and immigration.

"There is no place in the Republican Party, the Congress or the country for an ideology of racial supremacy of any kind," McConnell said in a statement released from his office. "I have no tolerance for such positions and those who espouse these views are not supporters of American ideals and freedoms. Rep. King's statements are unwelcome and unworthy of his elected position."

McConnell added, "If he doesn't understand why 'white supremacy' is offensive, he should find another line of work."

Says another stupid white confederate. :problem:

I wonder who conservative whites think they are kidding.

May the white conservative grandstanding commence

Romney calls on Steve King to resign after white supremacy remarks - Politico

These same dumb bigots like Romney and McConnell heartily agree with and vote for the same exact positions as Steve King. Same for their constituents.

Can't be trusted.

Judge bars citizenship question from 2020 Census

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge in New York has barred the Trump administration from adding a question about citizenship to the 2020 census.

U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman said Tuesday that while such a question would be constitutional, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross had added it arbitrarily and not followed proper procedure.

Controlled demolition of old Tappan Zee Bridge set for this morning

TARRYTOWN, Westchester County -- The controlled demolition of the old Tappan Zee Bridge just north of New York City will take place this morning, after the previously scheduled date was scuttled due to bad weather.

Tappan Zee Constructors said the demolition of the bridge's east anchor span was postponed due to inclement weather, and that sustained winds delayed the preparatory work needed for the operation.

Judge voids Alabama law protecting Confederate monuments

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A judge has overturned an Alabama law meant to prevent the removal of Confederate monuments from public property, ruling the act infringed on the rights of citizens in a mostly black city who are “repulsed” by a memorial in a city park.

The 10-page ruling issued late Monday by Jefferson County Circuit Judge Michael Graffeo said a 2017 state law barring the removal or alteration of historical monuments wrongly violated the free speech rights of local communities.

Yeah this time they blew it up right on schedule. They replaced it with the Mario Cuomo Bridge (barf), but you knew that. Hopefully we'll keep calling it the Tappan Zee Bridge. The old one was practically ready to fall down anyway, but you knew that.

A State Department official under investigation for allegedly creating “black list” of government employees thought to be disloyal to President Donald Trump has left her position, Politico reported Tuesday.

Mari Stull, dubbed the “Vino Vixen” due to her erstwhile career as a food and beverage lobbyist and a wine blog she published, was the target of two separate investigations into bullying and intimidation by Trump-appointed officials.

From the link:

"He believes the situation was not handled properly. "If there were concerns about that young lady's hair, that's a conversation you have with a coach and with a player, and in this case as young as this player was, you have the conversation with the parent before the game starts, but not during the game. Somewhere private. That's not something you do on the floor, during the game, before the game or after the game."

Former Chicago officer Jason Van Dyke sentenced to 81 months for fatally shooting Laquan McDonald

(CNN) Former Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke was sentenced Friday to six years and nine months in the killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, more than four years after the shooting.

The veteran police officer was convicted in October of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm for the shooting in October 2014. The shooting and video of it prompted protests throughout Chicago and fueled the ongoing nationwide conversation about police shootings.

I believe FB and Instagram Stories has accomplished its goal: killing off Snapchat. Maybe that's premature speculation to say. But it's not looking great for SNAP, rn.

Chinese scientist who gene-edited babies fired by university

SHENZHEN, China, Jan 21 (Reuters) - A Chinese scientist who created what he said were the world's first "gene-edited" babies evaded oversight and broke ethical boundaries in a quest for fame and fortune, state media said on Monday, as his former university said he had been fired.

He Jiankui said in November that he used a gene-editing technology known as CRISPR-Cas9 to alter the embryonic genes of twin girls born that month, sparking an international outcry about the ethics and safety of such research.

H.S. Basketball Team Pulls Out of Tournament At the School They Unfurled "Trump 2020" Banner Upon

Last week, student fans at Jordan (MN) High School proudly displayed a “Trump 2020” banner as the home team hosted Minneapolis Roosevelt High School, a school whose student body was predominantly non-white. The incident garnered widespread media attention.

That same Jordan High School team was supposed to play Minneapolis Henry High School as a part of a Martin Luther King Showcase tournament. The game was scheduled for 5:15 p.m. today — MLK Day. And the game was to be played at — Minneapolis Roosevelt High School. Oops…

Twitter suspends account that helped ignite controversy over viral encounter

New York (CNN Business)Twitter suspended an account on Monday afternoon that helped spread a controversial encounter between a Native American elder and a group of high school students wearing Make America Great Again hats.

The account claimed to belong to a California schoolteacher. Its profile photo was not of a schoolteacher, but of a blogger based in Brazil, CNN Business found. Twitter suspended the account soon after CNN Business asked about it.

AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas & Cinemark Won’t Play ‘Roma’ in Their Best Picture Showcases

Even though Roma ended up with a total of 10 Oscar nominations this morning, including Best Picture, that’s not a good enough reason for AMC Theatres, Regal Cinemas and Cinemark to pack away their grudge with Netflix. Every year, the two movie theater chains host a showcase of all the Best Picture nominees, but since Alfonso Cuarón‘s critically acclaimed Roma is a Netflix movie that didn’t stick to the traditional theatrical release plans, they won’t include the film in their line-up. You know, like a pouting child.

Deadline has word on the Regal Cinemas, Cinemark and AMC Theatres Best Picture showcase banning Roma from the film line-up that helps audiences catch up on the movies up for the most prestigious award in Hollywood. AMC Theaters even issued a cold statement to make sure everyone knew about their decision:
