Supreme Court won't block smokers' lawsuits against big tobacco companies

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court refused Monday to block Florida smokers' lawsuits against two major tobacco companies.

The justices denied petitions from Altria Group and British American Tobacco seeking a way out of eight challenges filed by smokers and relatives of deceased smokers that could cost them billions of dollars.

Martina Navratilova Is Expelled From an LGBTQ Advocacy Group Over Transphobia Accusations - Nation

Quote:
ew have done more for LGBTQ visibility in sports over the last four decades than Martina Navratilova. During her illustrious tennis career—she has one of the great athletic résumés in any sport—Navratilova won 18 Grand Slam singles titles and a remarkable 31 major-doubles crowns. In the process, she raised eyebrows and consciousness by coming out early in her career, bringing her partner to matches and being coached for a time by the first professional trans tennis player, Renée Richards. In addition, she has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ rights every step of the way. Which is why it was so shocking to hear that Athlete Ally, an advocacy group for LGBTQ people in sports, recently expelled Navratilova from their advisory board on charges of “transphobia.”

At issue was a column that Navratilova wrote for the London Sunday Times, in which she argued that trans women should not be allowed to compete in women’s sporting events. She called it a form of cheating. The offending piece was titled “The rules on trans athletes reward cheats and punish the innocent.”

...

Zeigler went on to say, “But the notion that trans women in sports are all cheaters who can’t be beaten ignores history and science. Sadly Martina has now found one area where she agrees completely with the very Trump supporters she has spent most of her last three years attacking as misinformed and dangerous.”

This story is wrenching, and not surprisingly, enemies of LGBTQ struggle are jumping on it with disturbing glee. The right-wing editorial page in the New York Post commented joyously on this controversy, under the headline, “The insane gay backlash against Martina Navratilova.” “So now this longtime gay icon is being ostracized for her heterodoxy by those she so vigorously championed when it was professionally risky. For shame.”

Blah, take a seat, Martina. So tired of this mentality.

L.A.’s Samuel French Bookshop to Close

LOS ANGELES: Samuel French has announced that the Samuel French Film & Theatre Bookshop on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, Calif., will close on March 31. The Samuel French collection of acting edition playscripts and musical libretti will continue to be available online.

“Although the community loves the store and its exceptional staff, most people are choosing to buy their books from e-retailers these days,” said Samuel French president Nathan Collins in a statement. “It is an unfortunate situation, in which many other bookshops find themselves. However, the good news is that Samuel French continues to serve the world online with an unparalleled range of shows to license and scripts to purchase. This is supported by our expert staff in New York, London, and L.A., and their outstanding service to our customers. Additionally, we are excited to continue exploring new ways to support the playwriting community in the digital age.”

HBO CEO Richard Plepler and Turner President David Levy Exiting in Major AT&T Shakeup

The DOJ lost its appeal to derail the AT&T-Time Warner merger on Tuesday, but apparently AT&T wasn’t done making waves this week.

In the span of a few minutes on Thursday afternoon, news broke that two of WarnerMedia’s (the renamed Time Warner’s) top execs were exiting in a major AT&T shakeup: HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler and Turner president David Levy will both be leaving the company.

Ohio Republican judge leaves GOP after 41 years over disgust with the party under Trump

A longtime Republican judge in Ohio has declared that she is switching her party affiliation to Democrat, the Columbus Dispatch reported Friday.

“I’ve been a registered Republican since I was 18, and 41 years later I do not recognize the Republican Party as it is today,” Common Pleas Judge Julie M. Lynch told the newspaper on Friday. “And I’m not the same person I was when I was 18,” she added.

More firings at TV and Radio Martí over controversial George Soros report

Four additional staffers at Radio and TV Martí have been fired over a controversial report broadcast last year that referred to Jewish philanthropist George Soros as “anti-Semitic” — bringing to eight the number of dismissals at the station so far following a months-long internal investigation by the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB), which oversees the Martí stations, as well as the Martínoticias digital site.

The report, aired by Isabel Cuervo for the Antena Live program, raises conspiracy theories about Soros, who is identified as a “left-wing billionaire of Hungarian-Jewish origin” and a “nonpracticing Jew of flexible morals.” The broadcast, which aired in three separate segments, included an interview that was posted on YouTube by RT.com that Cuervo used with no attribution to the source and another one passed off as her own interview with an alleged expert.

RT, hmmmmmmm.

I always wonder how much of Radio/TV Marti actually gets through the Cuban jamming. I can hear the radio in the US, with a lot of obnoxious noise underneath, but the jammers have much tighter antenna patterns since they're only covering the island.

Democrats block Fox News from televising debates after report on Trump ties: Washington Post

The Democratic National Committee will not allow Fox News to televise any of its candidates’ political debates through 2020, citing a report on the conservative media network’s ties to U.S. President Donald Trump, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

“Recent reporting in the New Yorker on the inappropriate relationship between President Trump, his administration and Fox News has led me to conclude that the network is not in a position to host a fair and neutral debate for our candidates,” DNC Chairman Tom Perez said in a statement to the Post. “Therefore, Fox News will not serve as a media partner for the 2020 Democratic primary debates.”

Thai court dissolves Shinawatra-linked party over princess PM bid

A key party linked to Thailand's powerful Shinawatra clan was dissolved Thursday by a court, just weeks before a general election, over its ill-starred bid to front a princess as a candidate for premier.

Thai Raksa Chart, which is tied to ex-premiers Thaksin and Yingluck Shinawatra, proposed Princess Ubolratana as its prime ministerial candidate if its bloc emerged with a lower house majority after the March 24 election.

Md. Senate Passes Styrofoam Ban, Would be Nation's First Statewide Ban

Maryland is one step closer to becoming the first state in the nation to ban foam food containers.

On Tuesday the state Senate passed a bill to ban restaurants, grocery stores, and other food providers from using expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam food containers. Retail sales of EPS food containers would also be illegal. The bill passed 34 to 13 with bipartisan support.

Let's see if they appeal this sentence but for now.

'Humiliated and ashamed.' Paul Manafort, former Trump campaign chairman, sentenced to nearly 4 years in prison

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Paul Manafort, the former chairman of President Donald Trump's campaign, was sentenced Thursday to nearly fouryears in federal prison for cheating banks and the government out of millions of dollars.

The prison sentence marks the end of a stunning downfall for the longtime political operative who helped elect four Republican presidents, including Trump. He is among a half-dozen people in Trump's orbit who have been charged as a result of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible cooperation with the Trump campaign.

Judge Ellis gave Manafort a fairly light sentence of 47 months, claiming he had lived an "otherwise blameless life".

"Otherwise blameless?" Yeah, other than selling out his country to international gangsters and corrupt practices that might make other lobbyists blush ...

"So Mrs. Lincoln, other than that nasty stuff at Ford's Theatre last night, how was the show?"

Judge Amy Jackson is up next week, and could still give him up to 10 years. Here's hoping.

Sometimes I see a phrase in quotes which just cry's out to me to be Googled in the books tab to see when it was coined: .

Reynolds's Miscellany of Romance, General Literature, Science, and Art

George William MacArthur Reynolds - 1849

A faint flush touched the cheek of the marchioness as the name of her son was proclaimed from usher to usher during his advance, and her utmost determination was requisite to keep her seated and silent, as at length the chamber door was thrown open, and rushing forward, the rejected child, the neglected youth, the single stain on her otherwise blameless life, and the present inheritor of the fortunes of her house and name, prostrated himself with the abject humility of a spaniel at her feet, and seizing her hands in both of his own trembling ones, covered it with kisses and with tears. “Blame me not, mother,” he faltered forth, as he again and again kissed the hand that was now cold as ice in his grasp. “Oh! forgive me for any artifice —for your suspense. I have been to you the cause of suffering and of sorrow since my birth, and in my birth; but the fault was not mine, and even if it were, have I not a long life before me to redeem it? and will you refuse to me, as a son, the friendship which, as a stranger, I won and was so proud of?” It was a moment of unutterable feeling, one that brings the hoarded thoughts of years into the compass of a single second of time. For an instant the proud mother gazed upon her outcast child, and then every feeling, broken by surprise, and shame, and pleasure, the flood-gates of her inmost soul gave way, and, starting up with a cry of delight, the humbled Marchioness of Clanrohan threw herself into the opened arms of the poor painter, “Young M'Carthy.”

https://books.google.com/books?id=yz1HAQAAMAAJ

It's Emerson Reynolds fault, he coined it, a cloud over what I'm sure was an otherwise blameless life. ;)

Reynolds's Miscellany appears to be edited by George William MacArthur Reynolds, but the short was by Emerson Reynolds titled Young M'Carthy.

George Reynolds is interesting:

"Reynolds was a prolific writer of popular fiction starting from The Youthful Imposter, published in 1835. Virtually forgotten now, during his lifetime he was more read than Dickens or Thackeray; in his obituary, the trade magazine The Bookseller called Reynolds "the most popular writer of our times"

"Reynolds was also a major figure in the Chartist movement. In 1846, he founded two magazines, Reynolds' Miscellany (RM) and The London Journal (LJ). In 1849, he founded "Reynolds's Political Instructor," which in May 1850 became Reynolds Weekly Newspaper, the leading radical newspaper of the post-Chartist era. It long survived him, ending publication in 1967 as the Sunday Citizen."

"In 1854, he relocated to Herne Bay in Kent, where he became one of the town's Improvement Commissioners. Reynolds was an advocate of British Republicanism; much of his journalism, especially during the 1870s, "promoted a levelling agenda against traditional social hierarchies and accentuated the difficulties of the British throne"."

Former Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, wife convicted of corruption charges

A jury has found former Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano guilty of corruption, while also convicting his wife, Linda, in the couple’s seven-week federal retrial in Central Islip.

The verdict came after five weeks of testimony and six days of juror deliberations in a proceeding that followed a mistrial last May.

What an unfortunate name to be wearing though the flap over his unfortunate use of language.

Mr. Bouchard.

To translate from English archaic to English modern. Bouch means; a mouth. The suffix -ard adds; hard.

Mr. Mouthard or Mr. Blowhard either way, how unfortunate.

Kansas State GOP representatives banned from Topeka restaurant for being disrespectful to staff members and other guests. The three GOP representatives were part of a 12-member group along with a couple of lobbyists who became boisterous after the manager cut their alcohol off because they had had too many drinks.

Quote:
“The owner of a downtown Topeka restaurant says he banned a group of high-ranking Kansas House Republicans and Statehouse lobbyists for being disrespectful to staff and other patrons while dining at the business,” the paper reported.

“White Linen’s manager and owner describe a boisterous scene that intensified in response to directives to the 12-person crowd to be quiet and the manager’s decision to cut off the flow of alcohol to Rep. Blaine Finch, a Republican from Ottawa and speaker pro tem,” they wrote.

There was a booze-fueled dust-up between staff and the lawmakers in the early evening hours of Feb. 27 after the party drank and ate at the restaurant, which is located near the capital, and some members in the party were also denied more alcohol after staff decided the group had had enough.

Per the report, others in the group of Republican lawmakers at the boozy affair included House Speaker Ron Ryckman (R-Olathe), Rep. Susan Concannon (R-Beloit), and lobbyists Dan Murray and Rachelle Colombo.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark — Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila's center-right government resigned Friday after the governing coalition failed to agree on and push through a planned social and health reform.

"I take the responsibility for the failure. It has been a huge disappointment to me," Sipila told a news conference, according to public broadcaster YLE. He added that the reform "had been one of our most important projects."
