RIP Google+

That’s it for Google+, Google’s failed social network that once tried to take on Facebook and Twitter. As scheduled, the company has now started deleting user accounts and their data.

Chances are you’re not going to feel all that sad about the end of Google+ since you probably haven’t used it for years. But if you’re feeling a bit nostalgic, here’s a little chronology of some of our coverage over the years.

Red Bull Music Academy and Radio to Shut Down

Red Bull Music Academy is to shut down after 21 years, the company announced in a statement Wednesday (April 3). Red Bull, an unlikely patron of underground music since the academy’s launch in 1998, said that RBMA and Red Bull Radio would close on October 31 in a move to “phase out the existing structure” and decentralize its operations in the creative industry. Yadastar, the marketing and consultancy company that partnered with Red Bull to develop RBMA, said in a statement that the companies had “mutually agreed to part ways.”

RBMA had long been held up as an apparently sustainable model for corporate partnership with artists. Acts including Flying Lotus, SOPHIE, Objekt, and Nina Kraviz benefitted to various degrees from a broad infrastructure that included international concerts and festivals as well as access to high-end equipment and studios. The funding model emulated some benefits of the traditional record label system without putting a premium on mainstream appeal, some pundits argued, despite wariness in underground music of brand tie-ins, particularly given Red Bull’s heavy branding at dance events. RBMA also ran an editorial platform and long-running lecture series, which featured talks with D’Angelo, Björk, and many more alternative music figures. Red Bull will continue to operate a decentralized music arm, Red Bull Music, without Yadastar’s involvement.

Exclusive: Google cancels AI ethics board in response to outcry - Vox

Quote:
This week, Vox and other outlets reported that Google’s newly created AI ethics board was falling apart amid controversy over several of the board members.

Well, it’s officially done falling apart — it’s been canceled. Google told Vox on Thursday that it’s pulling the plug on the ethics board.

The board survived for barely more than one week. Founded to guide “responsible development of AI” at Google, it would have had eight members and met four times over the course of 2019 to consider concerns about Google’s AI program. Those concerns include how AI can enable authoritarian states, how AI algorithms produce disparate outcomes, whether to work on military applications of AI, and more. But it ran into problems from the start.

Thousands of Google employees signed a petition calling for the removal of one board member, Heritage Foundation president Kay Coles James, over her comments about trans people and her organization’s skepticism of climate change. Meanwhile, the inclusion of drone company CEO Dyan Gibbens reopened old divisions in the company over the use of the company’s AI for military applications.

Board member Alessandro Acquisti resigned. Another member, Joanna Bryson, defending her decision not to resign, claimed of James, “Believe it or not, I know worse about one of the other people.” Other board members found themselves swamped with demands that they justify their decision to remain on the board.

Thursday afternoon, a Google spokesperson told Vox that the company has decided to dissolve the panel, called the Advanced Technology External Advisory Council (ATEAC), entirely.

Earlier today, at the federal courthouse in Brooklyn, Yevgeniy Braziler was sentenced by United States District Judge Ann M. Donnelly to 36 months’ imprisonment for his role in a scheme targeting investors, including numerous elderly victims, by selling them partnerships in fraudulent real estate companies. The amount of restitution will be determined by the Court at a later date.

Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and Philip R. Bartlett, Inspector-in-Charge, United States Postal Inspection Service, New York Division (USPIS), announced the sentence.

Ex-Congressman's Russian Bank Loses License for Money Laundering

A regional Russian bank owned by a former U.S. congressman had its license revoked Friday for violations that included breaking rules against money laundering.

Commercial Bank of Ivanovo, in which Republican former North Carolina Representative Charles Taylor owns an 80 percent stake, regularly broke anti-money laundering regulations, misrepresented the size of its provisions and used “schemes” to artificially inflate its capital, according to a central bank statement.

Woman arrested in connection with racist, anti-Semitic graffiti in Oklahoma

Around the same time that a building at the Highlander Education and Research Center in New Market, Tennessee—an 80-year-old civil rights institution—was burning down, hate-filled graffiti was being painted on buildings in Oklahoma. Specifically, a slew of Nazi-inspired swastikas, anti-Semitic phrases, and anti-LGBTQ and racist graffiti was left in front of and on offices of the Oklahoma Democratic Party and the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma City.

On March 29, Oklahoma City police released a grainy security-camera image to the public of a potential suspect. On Wednesday, the Cleveland County Democratic Party headquarters, the Firehouse Art Center, and McKinley Elementary School, all in the Oklahoma city of Norman, were vandalized with similar graffiti, and law enforcement said they believed the incidents in the two cities were related.

The Trump administration is nixing MLB's historic deal with Cuba

The Trump administration's hardening stance on Cuba — especially because of the Cuban government's support for embattled Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro — will have some major ramifications for Major League Baseball.

While Cuban players have historically had to undergo grueling, life-threatening defections to play in the United States, MLB and its players' union struck a deal with the Cuban government in December that would have created "a safe, legal path" for Cuban players to sign with MLB teams after reaching a certain age or accruing enough service time. The only catch was that the MLB team acquiring the player would pay a fee to the Baseball Federation of Cuba — and that turned out to be enough for the White House to put a stop to the deal.

A Labor Department official who continued legal work against an Ironworkers’ union after joining the agency has stepped down from his post.

Trump’s sister retires from the federal judiciary to avoid ethics investigation into her taxes

On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that Maryanne Trump Barry, President Donald Trump’s older sister, is retiring as a federal judge.

Trump Barry, who sits on the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, was hit with a misconduct complaint last October, stemming from a report that the Trump family used fraudulent tax schemes to increase their inheritance. Retiring from the bench ends that investigation.

Can anyone name a member of the Trump family who isn't under investigation?

Former Obama WH counsel Greg Craig indicted in charges connected to Mueller probe

Washington (CNN) A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted Greg Craig, a prominent Democratic attorney who worked for two presidents, charging him with false statements and concealing material information in connection with work he performed for Ukraine.

An indictment in the case against Craig, which originated in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, has been expected for several weeks, with Craig's own lawyers saying Wednesday they anticipated such an outcome.

Los Angeles Lakers 'part ways' with coach Luke Walton after three seasons

Luke Walton fell victim to unreasonable expectations.

Despite (mostly) steady annual improvement since a franchise-worst 17 wins in 2015-16, save for this drama-filled and injury-riddled campaign, the Los Angeles Lakers parted ways with Walton Friday following his third season at the helm and first directing LeBron James, calling it a mutual agreement in the press release.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Is Quitting Facebook

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez admits Facebook was “crucial” to her political campaign, but says she’s not only quitting the platform, she’s starting a campaign against it and other social media sites.

Ocasio-Cortez, in an interview on the Yahoo News podcast “Skullduggery,” said social media has become a “public health risk” leading to “increased isolation, depression, anxiety, addiction, escapism.”

Much as I like AOC, I think this may be her undoing. Addictive personalities always find new avenues for their obsessions. Most people I know who use social media aren't addicted to it; rather they simply use it to maintain connections to people, friends and relatives, who they'd otherwise rarely converse with.

Facebook, in particular, does need to "clean up its act," like not collecting, storing and selling your personal information, but that's another issue--other than the concept of social media itself.

Dang.

They didn't say which stores were closing. Also, the link says they're opening 15 new stores so it mans a net loss of 25 stores, overall.

South Korea Lifts 66-Year-Old Abortion Ban

In South Korea, a decades-old ban on abortions has been lifted after years of campaigning and legal battles against the law, which included possible prison sentences for doctors who perform abortions, and fines or prison sentences for anyone who underwent the procedure. South Korean activists celebrated as the news was announced outside a courthouse in the capital Seoul.

Lee Ga-hyun: “My friend had to use illegal drugs for a risky abortion because of the abortion law. I also wouldn’t have had much of a choice if I had became pregnant. But with today’s ruling, women like myself and my friend can live by our own free will.”
