‘End of an era’: San Fernando Valley’s last commercial orange grove is up for sale

June is peak harvest season for a grove of 1,500 plus orange trees just south of Ventura Boulevard. Yes, you read that correctly — there is a 14-acre orange grove in the Valley hills straddling the border of Tarzana and Woodland Hills. But these Valencia and Navel trees aren’t likely to see many more seasons.

They’re on what’s known as Bothwell Ranch, a property rich with history that was recently put up for sale with an eye on its development into 26 separate single-family homes in the upscale south Valley neighborhood.

ICE officer who drove his truck into row of Jewish protesters resigns

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who drove his pickup truck into a row of Jewish protesters at a detention facility in Rhode Island has resigned from his position.

On Aug. 14, Captain Thomas Woodworth drove into a row of protesters who were sitting on the ground and blocking the entrance to the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls. The protest was organized by the new Jewish group Never Again Action, which opposes ICE and United States immigration policy.

Two members of Proud Boys convicted in New York City brawl with antifa

Two members of the far-right Proud Boys were convicted Monday of attempted gang assault, attempted assault and riot for their role in a brawl with anti-fascist protesters last fall on the Upper East Side.

The jury in State Supreme Court in Manhattan rejected claims by the defendants, Maxwell Hare and John Kinsman, that they had acted in self-defense in the October 2018 incident, in which they beat four antifa (short for "anti-fascist") protesters after an appearance by Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes at the Metropolitan Republican Club.

Report: Ex-Mets Octavio Dotel, Luis Castillo Arrested In Dominican Drug, Money-Laundering Sting

Former Mets Octavio Dotel and Luis Castillo have reportedly been arrested in what the Dominican Republic's attorney general calls the island country's "largest operation against organized crime."

Dotel, 45, and Castillo, 43, both of whom are from the Dominican Republic, were nabbed Tuesday in connection with a drug-trafficking and money-laundering sting that targeted reputed drug lord Cesar Emilio Peralta, aka "The Abuser," the Dominican newspaper Diario Libre reported. It's not clear what specific charges the two former baseball stars are facing.

Founder of Mantria Corp. Sentenced to 22 Years For Operating $54 Million Ponzi Scheme

PHILADELPHIA – United States Attorney William M. McSwain announced that Troy Wragg, 37, of Philadelphia, PA was sentenced today to 22 years in prison and $54 million restitution by United States District Judge Joel H. Slomsky for perpetrating two fraud schemes.

The defendant was the founder of Mantria Corporation, based in Bala Cynwyd, PA. From 2005 until 2009, Wragg received approximately $54 million in funds from investors across the United States with the false promise that they would earn 50% or higher returns on their investments. The defendant told the victim investors that Mantria was a very successful company with investments in real estate and green energy. In reality, however, Mantria was a Ponzi scheme which used new investor funds to pay “earnings” to earlier investors.

Verizon To Shutter Fios 1, Leaving Just One NY Metro Hyperlocal Channel

Verizon will shutter its Fios 1 News programming as of September 16, leaving Altice’s Channel 12 as the sole hyperlocal news channel for the New York metro area.

Verizon’s decision not to renew its expiring 10-year contract with Regional News Network (RNN), the Ryebrook, N.Y.-based company that has been producing Fios1 content, also means job losses for about 150 RNN employees.

Ohio newspaper that battled injustice for 150 years to shut down: 'Scary for democracy'

It was in the late 1920s that the Ku Klux Klan regularly began gathering outside the home of William F Maag Jr in Youngstown. Maag owned the Vindicator newspaper, which unlike others in this once prosperous part of Ohio, had been willing to criticize the racist Klansmen.

Men on horseback, clad in white robes and hoods, would burn crosses and flaunt rifles and shotguns, in an attempt at intimidation. It didn’t work. The men of the Maag family would stand outside their home, themselves armed, refusing to be cowed, as the Vindicator continued to expose government officials who were part of the Klan.

Facebook bans Epic Times from buying ads.

Quote:
The Epoch Times, a conservative news outlet that has spent more money on pro-Trump ads than any group besides the president's campaign, was banned from buying ads on Facebook after violating the platform's policies.

The Epoch Times, a nonprofit news outlet owned by members of Falun Gong, a religious group that has been called a "doomsday cult," has spent around $2 million on pro-Trump Facebook ads. It has now been banned from purchasing new ads after trying to obfuscate its connection to the ads, which promoted Trump and spread conspiracy theories about his opponents, NBC News reported.

The Epoch Times is operated by members of Falun Gong, a Chinese spiritual group that “believes in a coming judgment day that will send communists to hell and says Trump is helping accelerate that timeline,” a recent NBC News investigation found.

Mayoral candidate who wanted to keep town white quits race.

Quote:
Jean Cramer will no longer be a candidate for Marysville City council in Michigan after she was caught on video calling for her town to remain as “white as possible.”

WXYZ reported that Cramer sent a letter to the city on Monday to withdraw from the race.

Cramer later defended her comments, telling WXYZ that she likes her town “the way it is.”

She also said that she disapproved of interracial marriage and that foreigners should “go back” and fix their own countries before coming here.

Disney+ Has Already Canceled Its First Series Before Launching

Disney+ has already one-upped Netflix in one way. Disney's new streaming service has already canceled a show before it aired, not even waiting for it to get to Season 3. Book of Enchantment, a series based on the popular book series by Serena Valentino featuring Disney's villains, will not be moving forward.

On Thursday, the day before Disney made several major Dinsey+ announcements, Deadline reported that Book of Enchantment was canceled. The pilot was written by Michael Seitzman and was set to be produced by ABC Signature Studios and Seitzman and Christina Davis' Maniac Productions. Seitzman was set to be the showrunner.

“He would never make it if he was us”

Bret Stephens, a well-known conservative and frequently-controversial New York Times opinion columnist is walking away from Twitter – a social media platform highly popular with journalists – after being mocked overnight for emailing a critic who referred to him as a “bedbug.”

After news broke Monday that several floors of the New York Times offices in midtown Manhattan may have bedbugs, one professor made a joke on Twitter
