Amber Rudd quits cabinet and attacks PM for 'political vandalism'

Boris Johnson’s government was in danger of imploding on Saturday night as the work and pensions secretary, Amber Rudd, quit the cabinet and resigned the Conservative whip, saying she could not stand by while “loyal, moderate MPs” were purged from the party.

In a devastating resignation letter, she accused the prime minister of “an assault on decency and democracy” and “an act of political vandalism” for sacking 21 of her Tory colleagues for backing a parliamentary bill to stop a no-deal Brexit.

Red Sox fire Dombrowski one season after title

The Boston Red Sox fired president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski on Sunday and plan to elevate assistant general managers Eddie Romero, Brian O'Halloran and Zack Scott to jointly lead their baseball-operations department for the rest of the season.

Dombrowski, 63, was the architect behind the Red Sox's 2018 World Series championship and had a contract that ran through the 2020 season. The Red Sox are in the midst of a disappointing season that has them eight games back of the second wild-card spot in the American League and 17½ games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Every time I look at you I can't understand
How we let the media get so out of hand
Every single day it's another frustration
You are making me hate mass communication

What's your next move Boris

Scottish judges rule PM's suspension of parliament is unlawful

Scottish appeal court judges have declared Boris Johnson’s decision to suspend parliament in the run-up to the October Brexit deadline is unlawful.

The three judges, chaired by Lord Carloway, Scotland’s most senior judge, overturned an earlier ruling that the courts did not have the power to interfere in the prime minister’s political decision to prorogue parliament.

Bye Bye North Carolina House Majority In 2020 NC GOP. #BlueWave20

Republican says they had to lie about vote to Democrats at 9/11 ceremonies — or ‘the terrorists win’

Republicans in the North Carolina House of Representatives have come under furious criticism for a vote overriding Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto of their budget bill, which blocks Medicaid expansion and underfunds public schools. Particularly at issue is the way they passed it — in a surprise morning vote, with half the Democratic lawmakers busy attending 9/11 memorial services, after promising Democrats that it was okay to skip the morning session because no votes would be held there.

State Rep. Jason Saine, however, sees no problem with any of this. Indeed, he told reporters, if Republicans hadn’t lied to Democrats and passed a partisan bill while they were away mourning 9/11, the terrorists would win.

Yujing Zhang, the Chinese woman detained in March for trespassing at Mar-a-Lago -- President Donald Trump's Florida country club -- was found guilty of lying to federal agents and for entering a restricted area.

California Just Banned Private Prisons, Including ICE Detention Facilities

California just passed a bill banning all for-profit prisons and immigrant detention facilities in the state, the Guardian reports — and some of these facilities could be gone as early as next year.

Bill AB32, passed Wednesday and heading to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s desk for signing, would shut down private facilities that hold inmates with criminal convictions. More than 2,200 people were held in such facilities as of June, according to data from the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics data reviewed by the Guardian. It would also shutter privately run facilities for immigrants, who are considered civil detainees despite being held in prison-like conditions.

Michigan Police Officer Is Terminated After K.K.K. Application Was Found in His Home

A police officer in Michigan was terminated on Thursday after a prospective homebuyer who had been touring the officer’s house posted a picture on social media of a framed Ku Klux Klan application he had seen there, spurring an internal investigation.

Frank Peterson, the city manager of Muskegon, confirmed on Friday that the officer, Charles Anderson, had been terminated, but said a report on the inquiry conducted by the Muskegon Police Department would not be released until next week.

California Senate evacuated after vaccine protester throws red liquid onto lawmakers

Hours away from wrapping up its work before adjourning for the year, the California Senate was forced Friday to abandon its historic chamber to finish its work in a nearby committee room after a protester dropped an unknown red liquid on senators from the visitor gallery, prompting the room to be evacuated.

The protester was among dozens who were inside the state Capitol in opposition to a pair of bills signed Monday by Gov. Gavin Newsom to impose new oversight of childhood vaccine exemptions. Authorities roped off the chamber with caution tape as the California Highway Patrol and Senate officers began an investigation.

Low turnout results in Rensselaer dropping football

Leading off today: Rensselaer won't field a varsity football team this year because the Section 2 school does not have enough players.

Superintendent Joe Kardash said 31 players expressed interest in the spring but not nearly enough showed up and then made it through the first week of practice. Just eight players appeared on the first day of practice and then 10 by mid-week. NYSPHSAA rules require a roster of at least 16 players for 11-man football.
