Paramount TV President Fired For Inappropriate Comments

Amy Powell, a 14-year veteran of Paramount and president of Paramount TV, has been fired. Paramount’s CEO Jim Gianopulos explained in a statement that multiple employees came forward regarding comments the executive made “in a professional setting, which they believed were inconsistent with our company’s values.” Though the statement does not reveal what the comments were, The Hollywood Reporter’s Kim Masters tweeted that they allegedly included “racially tinged language.” Can someone please explain why it is so hard for executives to not do this?

Clark County deputy fired over Proud Boys sweatshirt

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office has fired a deputy photographed wearing, and who apparently merchandises, apparel affiliated with the Proud Boys, a far-right group known for its white nationalist rhetoric and frequent appearances in the middle of political violence locally and nationwide.

The sheriff’s office placed Deputy Erin Willey on leave for an internal investigation in response to the Columbian’s reporting, after the office was shown a photograph of Willey wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with a Proud Boys logo. She was terminated Tuesday after the investigation was completed.

Hmmm. So from reading the link the idiot and his idiot father have “hired a lawyer.” I am stunned. But those seeking asylum and/or separated from their kids and traveling with little money can’t get access to attorneys. Yeah, I know, Joe will be here shortly saying they can hire one. With no assets and one that specializes in immigration law? Unlikely.

"Triumph of the Will" got plenty of positive reviews back in 1935. Although revisions down the road identified it for what it actually was...an enormous snooze, as opposed to "Birth of a Nation". Where the continuing accolades in this country provide all the confirmation one needs to identify how little difference there is between this country today and this country in 1850.

Context. Triumph of the Will was not for international audiences. In fact, much of its footage was reused in US propaganda films when we joined the war. Capra's Why We Fight series had some masterful uses of this. You'd see good Germans being good Germans while the voice-over in English talks about how Americans don't go for this sort of thing (yet).

The Leni Riefenstahl movie for world audiences was Olympia, and it's almost a good movie. It started the genre of ultra-pretentious Olympic Games coverage that survives to this day on TV. It's in sections, for various segments of the international audience. The English language section does show Jesse Owens making fools out of Hitler's Aryan supermen.

Birth of a Nation is mostly a masterful piece of propaganda, as reinforced by Griffith's use of editing and scene coverage techniques that were new at the time. Like I've said before, its best context is in film classes, shown on a medium that allows slow motion and freeze frames to illustrate concepts. In a theater full of cheering rednecks... no, can't advocate that.

It's not well known that Birth of a Nation was not universally well received at the time. Griffith got all in a snit about his supposed searing document of Klan heroism not being universally praised, and he went off and bankrupt Biograph Studios making Intolerance, where he was going to spend hours and hours showing people what happens when you argue with true believers. What happened in this case was that the movie bombed, the studio imploded, and they couldn't even afford to strike the sets. Babylon stood, rotting, next to Vermont Avenue for generations afterward.

‘Crying Nazi’ barred from Virginia for 5 years

A self-professed white nationalist involved in violence at last year’s rally in Charlottesville, Virginia pleaded guilty to assault and battery Friday, prosecutors said.

Christopher Cantwell was arrested after August’s “Unite the Right” rally. Cantwell, who was featured in a Vice news documentary about the demonstrations, became known as the “crying Nazi” after posting an emotional video when an warrant was issued for his arrest.

Yes, quite the nasty scene on this one. I don't think he's the only resignation. WBAI, of course, continues year after year generating the best bathroom reading in non-commercial broadcasting.

California panel strips ex-USC dean’s medical license

LOS ANGELES—The state agency that regulates physicians on Friday ordered the University of Southern California’s former medical school dean stripped of his license to practice medicine, citing “an appalling lack of judgment” in his use of drugs and association with a circle of addicts and criminals while leading the major institution.

The Medical Board of California announced that it was adopting the findings of an administrative law judge who heard days of testimony this spring from Dr. Carmen Puliafito and other witnesses. The decision does not go into effect for 30 days, and Puliafito has the option to appeal. His attorney, Peter Osinoff, did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

Snapchat will shut down Snapcash, forfeiting to Venmo

Snapcash ended up as a way to pay adult performers for private content over Snapchat, not just a way to split bills with friends. But Snapchat will abandon the peer-to-peer payment space on August 30th. Code buried in Snapchat’s Android app includes a “Snapcash deprecation message” that displays “Snapcash will no longer be available after %s [date]”. Shutting down the feature will bring an end to Snapchat’s four-year partnership with Square to power the feature for sending people money.

Snapcash may have become more of a liability than a utility. With apps like Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, and Square Cash itself, there were plenty of other ways to pay back friends for drinks or Ubers, so Snapcash may have seen low legitimate usage. Meanwhile, a quick Twitter search for “Snapcash” surfaced plenty of offers of erotic content in exchange for payments through the feature. It may have been safer for Snapchat to ditch Snapcash than risk PR problems over its misuse.

Ryan Lochte banned 14 months for anti-doping violation

July 23 (Reuters) - Six-time Olympic gold medallist swimmer Ryan Lochte has been suspended for 14 months for receiving an intravenous infusion of a permitted substance without a therapeutic use exemption, the U.S. anti-doping agency (USADA) said on Monday.

Lochte, who was expected to compete at this week's national championships in California, posted a photo of himself on social media in May that depicted himself receiving the infusion, which triggered the USADA investigation.

‘Rick and Morty’ Co-Creator Dan Harmon Deletes Twitter After Controversial Video Resurfaces

Dan Harmon, creator of NBC’s Community and co-creator of irreverent Adult Swim cartoon Rick and Morty, has deleted his Twitter account after coming under fire over a resurfaced 2009 pilot where he rapes a baby doll.

“Daryl,” a five-minute comedy pilot, stars Harmon in a parodic spin on Showtime serial killer drama Dexter. In the scene, Harmon’s character enters through a window, removes his pants, and while half-naked, rubs his genitals against a baby doll on a couch.

Woman found guilty of murder and arson in deaths of two Kansas City firefighters

Thu Hong Nguyen was found guilty Monday of murder and arson in the deaths of Kansas City firefighters John Mesh and Larry Leggio.

The 46-year-old lit a fire amid flammable liquids in a storeroom of her nail salon and it destroyed a three-story building in the 2600 block of Independence Boulevard on Oct. 12, 2015.

Hello. The Times sold a month ago and is presently moving to El Segundo, down the road from the oil refinery. It was in the papers. It was probably on CBS.

Say bye bye to your big donor corrupt cash IDC

Sugarman cracks down on former-IDC campaign accounts

ALBANY — The state's top election enforcement office has issued demands that could throw a wrench in the re-election efforts of the state Senate's former Independent Democratic Conference members.

The fate of more than $2.5 million raised from a partnership between the Independence Party and the state Senate's now-defunct IDC was the subject of a letter sent on Friday by the state's Division of Election Law Enforcement, which identified more than $1.4 million that needs to be refunded to contributors. The letter also demanded candidates return excessive contributions, which could add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
