BREAKING: Ga. lawmaker who used racial slurs in TV show resigns - Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Quote:
“They exploited my state of mind for profit and notoriety,” said Spencer, who said he was denied the chance to have final approval over what will air. “This media company’s deceptive and fraudulent behavior is exactly why President Donald Trump was elected.”

They exploited his state of mind? That implies he has a mind.

Federal judge orders immediate release of immigrant detained while delivering pizza

NEW YORK -- A federal judge has ordered the release of an Ecuadorean immigrant who was held for deportation after he delivered pizza to a Brooklyn Army installation. Judge Paul Crotty issued an order late Tuesday saying Pablo Villavicencio must be immediately released. The man is being held at a New Jersey lockup.

The judge said the release is necessary because his imminent removal from the United States is no longer reasonably foreseeable.

Key word Toronto's conservative mayor

Toronto votes for a total ban on handgun sales after mass shooting

After a mass shooting left three people dead, including the shooter, in Toronto on Sunday, the city’s conservative mayor backed a proposal that even the most liberal American politicians wouldn’t dare support ― a total ban on all handgun sales.

“Why does anyone in this city need to have a gun at all?” Mayor John Tory asked at a city council meeting on Monday.

MTA Plans to Hike Fares in 2019, 2021 By 4 Percent Each

The MTA is proposing to increase fares twice in the next three years, including a four-percent hike next year, officials said during Wednesday's board meeting.

Specifics on the proposed increase in 2019 and a second four-percent hike in 2021 weren't immediately clear and won't be known until public hearings in the fall or winter. A 2017 hike likewise bumped fares on the subways, buses, Metro-North and Long Island Railroad by 4 percent, but kept the base subway fare at $2.75.

YouTube Deletes Videos Posted by Infowars, Suspends Alt-Right Channel From Live-Streaming

Google’s YouTube pulled down four videos posted by Alex Jones’ ultra right-wing Infowars for violating policies banning hate speech and graphic content.

YouTube’s penalizing of Infowars, a notorious source of conspiracies and misinformation, is the latest development in the ongoing challenge internet platforms face in trying to balance free speech with enforcing standards to block hateful and disturbing content.

West Virginia official rejects Blankenship's third-party Senate bid

The West Virginia secretary of state is blocking ex-coal CEO Don Blankenship's efforts to appear on the ballot in November as a third-party candidate, setting up a high-stakes legal fight.

Secretary of State Mac Warner (R) said on Thursday that Blankenship's attempt to appear on the ballot as the Constitution Party's candidate would violate the state's "sore loser" law after Blankenship lost his bid for the GOP nomination in May.

New York moves to kick Charter Spectrum cable out of the state

ALBANY – New York's utility regulators moved Friday to revoke Charter Communication's ability to operate in the state, arguing that the state's top cable provider hasn't lived up to the terms of its 2016 merger with Time Warner Cable.

The Public Service Commission gave Charter 60 days submit a plan to hand over its New York operations to a new cable, internet and phone provider, rescinding the state's previous approval of the major cable merger.

Louisville: Papa John didn't respond to text message about stadium name change

Louisville said it told Papa John’s founder John Schnatter that his name was coming off the team’s football stadium, contrary to what Schnatter has said publicly about what happened.

The school announced Friday that Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium would simply become Cardinal Stadium. Schnatter told Louisville’s WLKY that he was not informed of the decision to rename the stadium until it was publicly announced.

Selma Blair Quits Twitter in Solidarity With James Gunn

Vocalizing her support for director James Gunn after he was fired by Disney from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Selma Blair has decided to quit Twitter as a further means of protest. Tweeting a farewell message on Saturday evening, Blair wrote that you can follow her on other, more photo-friendly social media platforms instead. “So long. You can find me on Instagram,” she said, per THR. “#Istandwithjamesgunn.” Since news of Gunn’s firing broke, Blair has used her Twitter account as a constant sounding board to get her followers to sign a petition to reinstate Gunn as Vol. 3’s director — Gunn was fired for his history of offensive tweets, a decision he fully accepted and took responsibility for. “Because if people are punished despite changing, then what does that teach people about owning mistakes and evolving?” Blair wrote, in part. “This man is one of the good ones.”

The Nassau County Police Department said Monday it's scrapping codes in an internal spreadsheet that denoted Asian personnel with the letter "Y," apparently for "yellow."

In wake of legal battle, Success Academy gives up push for middle school space

This summer, parents rallied at the steps of City Hall and crammed into town hall meetings to demand space for a new Success Academy charter middle school. The network’s combative CEO penned an open letter calling on the mayor to act.

After a last-ditch attempt to secure an emergency order that would have allowed Success Academy Lafayette to open inside a Brooklyn elementary school, the city’s largest charter network gave up its fight.

Facebook’s security chief is leaving, and no one’s going to replace him

Facebook’s chief security officer, Alex Stamos, said today that he’ll be leaving the company later this month. The announcement comes just a day after Facebook — and to a large extent, Stamos — revealed that Facebook had discovered malicious actors who continue to use the platform to manipulate political discussions and organizing in the United States.

Stamos won’t be replaced after he leaves, meaning no one will hold the title of “chief security officer” at Facebook. All eyes are trained on the company to see how it will deal with major security concerns, including the use of fake accounts to manipulate politics and the Cambridge Analytica data scandal.

Hackers charged with stealing 15 million credit and debit card numbers

WASHINGTON — Federal prosecutors revealed Wednesday that three men are now in custody, charged in a massive hacking operation that targeted businesses in 47 states and stole the credit and debit card numbers of more than 15 million people.

Annette Hayes, the U.S. attorney in Seattle, said the three were part of a group that called itself FIN7 and used computer malware to steal customer card numbers from the point-of-sale terminals at more than 3,600 business locations. "The total loss so far is in the tens of millions of dollars."

In Court Papers, NRA Stresses Financial Pressures and Says It May Have to Shut Down NRATV

The National Rifle Association typically portrays itself as an indomitable force. But an ongoing court case has the gun group taking inventory of its wounds. In a new legal filing, it contends that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s campaign to pressure insurers and financial services companies to cut ties with the NRA could deeply harm its financial health and ability to “fulfill its advocacy objectives.”

In the complaint, entered July 20 and first reported by the New York Law Journal, the NRA claims it has lost income and access to banking services as a result of the state’s actions. One of the more dramatic impacts of Cuomo’s push: The NRA says it has not been able to renew its media liability insurance. If the group cannot secure a policy soon, it could be forced to shutter its multimillion-dollar television network, NRATV, or a number of its print publications, the complaint reads. The NRA also says that, without insurance, it “cannot maintain its physical premises” or “convene off-site meetings and events.”
