Human Rights Campaign Executive Resigns Over Use of the N-Word

Mary Beth Maxwell, Senior Vice President for Programs, Research and Training in HRC’s educational arm, the HRC Foundation, has resigned following her use of the N-word in front of colleagues.

Politico Playbook reported: “[Maxwell] resigned from the organization on Wednesday after a colleague of hers reported that she had used the N-word twice in front of a colleague. In an internal email to staff sent out earlier today, HRC President Chad Griffin said Maxwell had used the racist term once when recounting ‘an upsetting personal story’ and a second time when repeating ‘the word in describing an external situation that [she] found horrifying, in which racial and homophobic slurs were used.’”

Iran lawmakers fire finance minister as economic woes mount

TEHRAN, IRAN Iran's parliament voted Sunday to fire the country's finance minister amid an economic freefall fanned by America's withdrawal from the nuclear deal with world powers, dealing another blow to President Hassan Rouhani's embattled administration.

It's unlikely that parliament's dismissal of Masoud Karbasian will staunch the bleeding with Iran's rial currency falling to new lows against the U.S. dollar as chronically high unemployment and inflation haunt the country.

The former "SportsCenter" anchor will accept a buyout of the remainder of her contract with the network, said sources. Hill's deal with ESPN still has at least two years to run and she stands to walk away with millions of dollars from ESPN parent Disney while she pursues other career opportunities, sources said.

Vladimir Putin Fires Russian Military Generals

Russian President Vladimir Putin fired 15 Russian generals on Tuesday as the country prepares to launch its biggest war games in over four decades. Among those fired were Vladlen Aksenov, the deputy minister of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, and Sergei Koryuchin, head of federal penitentiary services in Russia’s Omsk region.

Generals in Russia are often fired in groups, experts note. Eleven generals were fired in April 2018, and other groups were let go in 2016 and 2017. During previous rounds of dismissals, some officials were arrested for corruption, and this week’s case was no different. At least one general, the Minister of Emergency Situations in Russia’s Tomsk region, Mikhail Begun, was also apprehended on corruption charges for allegedly taking bribes. Experts say they suspect more arrests could soon be carried out.

Axios: McGahn Leaving White House After Kavanaugh Confirmed Or After Midterms

White House counsel Don McGahn is planning to leave sometime this fall, either after Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed by Congress or after the midterm elections, Axios reported Wednesday morning.

According to top White House officials and people close to the lawyer who spoke to Axios, President Trump has not decided who he’ll tap to replace McGahn yet, but McGahn has said that he wants Emmet Flood to be his successor. Flood, who worked for the Clinton and Bush administrations, was hired this spring to help manage the Russia probe. Senior administration officials hope Flood will be the replacement as well, according to Axios.

No More 'Taxicab Confessions': HBO Removes All of Its Adult Entertainment Programming

HBO is out of the adult entertainment business, as the network quietly removed all of the erotic-themed movies and TV shows from its channels and streaming services.

"Over the past several years HBO has been winding down its late-night adult fare," an HBO representative told TheWrap. "While we're greatly ramping up our other original program offerings, there hasn't been a strong demand for this kind of adult programming, perhaps because it's easily available elsewhere."

Israeli businessman Dankner to serve three years in prison after appeal rejected

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel’s Supreme Court on Wednesday increased former tycoon Nochi Dankner’s prison sentence to three years after rejecting his appeal against his conviction for securities fraud related to the IDB group he once controlled.

Dankner, 63, was found guilty in 2016 of manipulating his company’s shares ahead of a planned stock issue and was sentenced by a Tel Aviv district court to two years behind bars.

Browns release LB Mychal Kendricks after insider trading charges

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns have released linebacker Mychal Kendricks, who was charged today with insider trading and faces up to a year in prison.

Here's the statement from John Dorsey:

Prior to signing Mychal, we were informed that there was a financial situation that he had been involved with in 2014. We were told Mychal had fully cooperated with investigators as a victim. From what was communicated at that time and based on the numerous questions we asked and further due diligence on our part, including checking with the league office, there was no information discovered that conveyed otherwise.

Matteo Salvini: Italy’s interior minister faces kidnap charge

Italy’s interior minister has been effectively charged with kidnap, illegal arrest and abuse of office after more than 100 migrants were confined to a coastguard rescue ship for ten days.

Matteo Salvini, the leader of far-right League party who is also deputy prime minister, has been placed under investigation by the public prosecutor in Agrigento, the equivalent in Italy of being charged.

Oklahoma legislators who opposed teacher pay bill are voted out

(CNN) Six Oklahoma House representatives who voted against the state's teacher pay bill lost their primary runoff elections on Tuesday night.

"Instead of making our case at the steps of the Capitol, we have the opportunity to make our voices heard at the ballot box," Oklahoma Education Association President Alicia Priest said on April 12, after teachers in the state went on strike for nine days.

OSU Trustee Jeffrey Wadsworth Resigns; Wanted Harsher Urban Meyer Punishment

An Ohio State trustee has resigned his position because the university imposed what he felt was a minimal punishment against head football coach Urban Meyer.

"I didn't feel that I'd seen high-integrity behavior," Jeffrey Wadsworth said Thursday after stepping down from the board, according to Marc Tracy of the New York Times.

Manafort Ally Charged by U.S. Worked With Indicted Russian, Cambridge Analytica

A former associate of Paul Manafort, who was charged Friday with failing to register in the U.S. as a foreign agent for his work lobbying on behalf of a Ukrainian political party, is a longtime international political operative who’s partnered with a Russian already indicted in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe.

The charges against Sam Patten are spelled out in a criminal information, which often precedes a guilty plea. He’s scheduled to appear in federal court in Washington before U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson at 11 a.m. as part of a plea agreement, according to the court docket.

Two prosecutors leave Mueller's office

Washington (CNN) Prosecutors Ryan Dickey and Brian Richardson are no longer working for the office of special counsel Robert Mueller, the Justice Department confirmed.

Both lawyers were relatively junior but frequently spotted members of Mueller's corps. Both have worked on court cases that Mueller opened as part of his investigation into Russian interference and coordination with the Trump campaign in the 2016 presidential election.

The Village Voice Is Officially Dead

Three years after buying The Village Voice, and a year after the paper shut down its print edition, owner Peter Barbey told the remaining staff today that the publication will no longer be posting any new stories.

"Today is kind of a sucky day," Barbey told the staff, according to audio obtained by Gothamist. "Due to, basically, business realities, we're going to stop publishing Village Voice new material [sic]."

Father of Alison Lundergan Grimes indicted in campaign finance conspiracy

Longtime Kentucky Democratic operatives Jerry Lundergan and Dale Emmons were indicted by a federal grand jury in Lexington Friday for allegedly making illegal contributions to the 2014 U.S. Senate campaign of Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes and then conspiring to cover them up.

Emmons was indicted on six counts and Lundergan was indicted on 10 counts after investigators found they “willingly and knowingly” made corporate contributions of more than $25,000 to Grimes’ campaign and then worked to make false entries in the campaign’s financial records to cover up the contributions.

Michael London, a former member of the Trumbull Town Council in Connecticut, said he's resigning from the Republican Party and blamed President Trump, calling him "the worst president our country has had — ever.”
