Tennis umpires reportedly mulling boycotting Serena Williams matches after US Open flap

The Serena Williams US Open controversy rages on. After Serena Williams lost in the final to Naomi Osaka on Saturday, all anyone could talk about was Williams' altercation with umpire Carlos Ramos that led to her being fined $17,000. Williams received warnings for receiving coaching and breaking a racket, before she was docked a game for calling Ramos a "thief."

In the fallout of the incident, the U.S. Tennis Association and Women's Tennis Association both came out in support of Williams. The USTA praised Williams for her conduct after the match, whereas WTA CEO Steve Simon said that "there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men vs. women."

This report appears to be upside down and running opposite of what in in the thread about this. Or maybe this is a new flap.?.

I don't know much about tennis umpires. I hope they're not like horse show judges.

CBS has terminated Jeff Fager's contract as executive producer of 60 Minutes amid allegations of inappropriate conduct.

Quote:
CBS Corp. has terminated “60 Minutes” producer Jeff Fager’s contract following a bombshell New Yorker article that accused the “60 Minutes” executive producer of sexual harassment.

Fager’s departure comes days after CBS announced the departure of its former CEO and chairman, Les Moonves, not long after two New Yorker articles detailed accusations of sexual misconduct against him.

Six former employees told The New Yorker that Fager would touch employees inappropriately while inebriated at company events, including an incident in which Fager allegedly commented on an associate producer’s breasts and then became “belligerent” when she refused his drunken advances. Fager denied the allegations to The New Yorker in July.

Fager and CBS both claim that the departure is not “directly related” to the allegations against him, which are being independently investigated. CBS released an internal memo claiming Fager “violated company policy.”

Democratic AGs win case against Education Secretary DeVos

BOSTON — Democratic attorneys general from 19 states and the District of Columbia have won a case against U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos over her decision to suspend rules meant to protect students from abuse by for-profit colleges.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, argued DeVos violated rule-making laws when she announced a decision last year to delay so-called borrower defense to repayment rules finalized under President Barack Obama and scheduled to take effect in July 2017.

San Francisco to Remove 19th Century Statue Some Call Racist

A San Francisco board has voted unanimously to remove a 19th-century statue that activists say is racist and demeaning to indigenous people.

The unanimous decision Wednesday night by the San Francisco Board of Appeals involves the "Early Days" statue, which depicts a Native American at the feet of a Spanish cowboy and a Catholic missionary. It is part of a group of statues near City Hall that depict the founding of California.

Assemblyman Brian Miller's former aide arrested over alleged petition fraud

As primary voters cast their ballots on Thursday, the New York State Police announced it had arrested a former staff member for Republican Assemblyman Brian Miller on charges involving forged ballot petition signatures for the Conservative Party line. The investigation was undertaken in conjunction with the Albany County district attorney’s public integrity unit.

Kajus Normantas, the former staff member, pleaded not guilty following his arrest on Wednesday. Normantas had volunteered on the campaign for Miller, who is running unopposed on the Republican, Independence and Reform lines in addition to the Conservative line.

Milwaukee police chief says one officer in Sterling Brown incident has been fired

An incident last January thrust Milwaukee guard Sterling Brown into the middle of a national debate on police use of excessive force with black men.

Brown was thrown to the ground and tased over a late-night parking violation outside a Walgreens store, a situation where six police cars were called. You can see the body cam video above, but Brown shows no signs of resistance, nor was he ever charged in this situation. Brown filed a civil rights lawsuit against the Milwaukee Police Department over the incident, the city’s mayor apologized for it, the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission asked for a full review of, and the Milwaukee City Attorney filed papers in court saying the officers did nothing wrong, while the Bucks organization responded with support for Brown as did the team’s players.

Can't wait until California also changes the names of all these public parks and streets bearing the names of these stupid, freaked-out white conservative eugenicists.

Sweden Pulls The Plug On Popular, Citizen-Run Twitter Experiment

From “the masturbating Swede” to the trolling of President Donald Trump, Sweden’s citizen-run Twitter account has never been a stranger to controversy. But after nearly seven years of Swedes tweeting as the voice of their nation, the Curators of Sweden project will come to an end.

Launched in December 2011 as an initiative of the Swedish Institute and VisitSweden, the project aimed to present the Scandinavian country through the eyes of its citizens. Each week, a new person would take control of the @sweden Twitter account and tweet whatever they wanted. When the project officially comes to an end this month, 365 people will have posted about 200,000 tweets on @sweden.

I think the Swedes are learning the same lesson as us -- be careful when you make some idiot the voice of your nation.

Walmart worker fired for loudly insulting Muslim woman and spying on her in the changing room.

Quote:
The white-haired employee loudly insulted the woman as she changed in private out of her traditional Islamic clothing at a Minneapolis-area store, and also peered underneath the door as the woman tried on items, reported WCCO-TV.

The employee said she purposefully unlocked a “dirty” changing stall for the customer, and she stood outside the door and complained about Muslims as she tried to sneak a peek of the woman as she changed clothing.

“See, they have to take everything off to change,” the worker said. “They think they own the world. You don’t tell me what to do, I’m old enough to be your grandmother. I can talk if I want to.”

The employee has not been identified, but CAIR-MN said she was no longer employed at the store.

Hater can hate on her unemployed time, now.

Former aide to New York Gov. Cuomo faces corruption sentence

NEW YORK (AP) - A federal judge is set to decide Thursday whether a former top aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo receives leniency or a long prison sentence for fraud and accepting bribes.

Joseph Percoco's conviction last spring was an election-year embarrassment for Cuomo. His opponents say it proves the two-Democrat hasn't done enough to address chronic corruption in state government, even within his own administration.
