FBI investigating whether Russian money went to NRA to help Trump
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation- ... 31139.html

The FBI is investigating whether a top Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter have told McClatchy.

FBI counterintelligence investigators have focused on the activities of Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank who is known for his close relationships with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and the NRA, the sources said.

[snip]

However, the NRA reported spending a record $55 million on the 2016 elections, including $30 million to support Trump – triple what the group devoted to backing Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential race. Most of that was money was spent by an arm of the NRA that is not required to disclose its donors.

Two people with close connections to the powerful gun lobby said its total election spending actually approached or exceeded $70 million. The reporting gap could be explained by the fact that independent groups are not required to reveal how much they spend on Internet ads or field operations, including get-out-the-vote efforts.

[snip]

Torshin, a leading figure in Putin’s party, has been implicated in money laundering by judicial authorities in Spain, as Bloomberg News first revealed in 2016. Spanish investigators alleged in an almost 500-page internal report that Torshin, who was then a senator, capitalized on his government role to assist mobsters laundering funds through Spanish properties and banks, Bloomberg reported.

A summary obtained by McClatchy of the still-secret report links Torshin to Russian money laundering and describes him as a godfather in a major Russian criminal organization called Taganskaya.

Investigators for three congressional committees probing Russia’s 2016 operations also have shown interest in Torshin, a lifetime NRA member who has attended several of its annual conventions. At the group’s meeting in Kentucky in May 2016, Torshin spoke to Donald Trump Jr. during a gala event at the group’s national gathering in Kentucky in May 2016, when his father won an earlier-than-usual NRA presidential endorsement.

[snip]

Torshin was a senior member of the Russian Senate and in recent years helped set up a Moscow gun rights group called Right to Bear Arms. He not only spoke with Trump Jr. at the NRA convention, but he also tried unsuccessfully to broker a meeting between Putin and the presidential candidate in 2016, according to the Times. He further sought to meet privately with the candidate himself near the 2016 NRA convention.

[snip]

On top of Torshin’s efforts to cozy up to the Trump campaign, the Moscow banker has forged ties with powerful conservatives, including Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, the Californian whom some have deemed Putin’s best friend in Washington. In a phone interview in 2016, Rohrabacher recalled meeting Torshin in Moscow a few years earlier and described him as “a mover and shaker.”

Last February when Torshin visited Washington, Rockefeller heir and conservative patron George O’Neill Jr. hosted a fancy four-hour dinner for the banker on Capitol Hill, an event that drew Rohrabacher, Erickson and other big names on the right. Rohrabacher has labeled Torshin as “conservatives’ favorite Russian,” Torshin was in Washington at the time to lead his country’s delegation to the National Prayer Breakfast, where Trump spoke. The banker also was slated to see the presidentat a meet-and-greet event prior to a White House breakfast, but Torshin’s invitation was canceled after the White House learned of his alleged mob connections, Yahoo News reported.

The Russians will use anything and anybody available if they think it will be to their advantage...including polonium.

The facts emerge:

1. Russia and Russian kleptocracy made the whole Republican Party go.

2. Most of it was laundered money.

3. drumpf was on the take from the word go. It kept him solvent.

3a. The case, if there ever is one, will spend a lot of time on what happened at the Russian Miss Universe. It has the appearance of a global financial cabal getting its act together.

4. The motives are clear:

4a. End the sanctions, conclude the multi-trillion-dollar oil deal, make this cabal the new Saudi Arabia.

4b. Disrupt government in NATO countries. Hijack dissident groups or ones with potential for chaos (NRA fits the latter).

4c. Seize control of Internet discourse through time-proven disinfo/agitprop campaigns.

4d. Recruit elected officials (Rorabacher, et al), and those closely allied with them, using money laundering, other types of financial aid, or simple dirty-recruit spycraft.

4e. Influence elections through previously established disinfo channels. Get sympathizers/ recruits/ agents/ whatever into office.

4f. Remind those benefiting from money laundering who can rat them out if necessary (standard kompromat).

5. The scope of the corruption, if it is ever revealed, will be beyond imagination, permeating many aspects of American life, and making Watergate look like a two-bit burglary.

There will be, and they will. Too bad all the really good stuff will be after we're all dead, when undergrads ask their history professors, "What were they thinking?"

N.R.A. needs to get out in front this. Using foreign money to influence U.S. Elections is against federal law.

Apparently Russians with really good connections attended 45's Inaugural Ball and rubbed elbows several high ranking incoming Administration Officials.

Gee, I remember when conservatives were AGAINST communism and Russia. Now a KGB goon is their hero.

Communism collapsed, and all the state owned industries were up for grabs. This combined with climate change, which makde Arctic oil exploration possible. They discovered that the Arctic has enough oil to make whoever owns it the next Saudi Arabia. This plus the passage of USSR's massive state-owned industries into the hands of a few oligarchs changed everything. Follow the money. Everything since has been about the sanctions, and various billionaires angling for a piece of the action when they're gone.

Little things lead to big things. If they hadn't whacked Magnitsky, and maybe been a little less overtly military in Ukraine, the sanctions wouldn't have happened. Right about now, the global cabal would be buying and selling the rest of us. Instead, it's 007 time.

I used to say the next oil war would be in the Arctic. That turned out to be wrong. Due to circumstances, it is in the United States, and we're losing.

United Russia, Putin's party, is an authoritarian nationalist right-populist party. It's very much like Trumpism, but it's the more Russian version. They do want to make Russia great again, and part of that is a plan for Russia to expand back into territory lost during the post-Soviet collapse but maybe going back to the Tsars. That would include regions like Georgia and Ukraine.

Its partner in all this, and especially its campaign against gays and feminism, is the Russian Orthodox Church. Seriously. I keep saying listen to Pussy Riot. They are a Russian all-female punk band, and like punk artists everywhere, they know the score. Some of their stuff they even sing in English, and even other than the anti-Trump video they released in 2016.

It is definitely no longer a Communist party. It's a kleptocratic, kakistocratic party. (Yah, you may have to google the 2nd term.)

Putin did once head the KGB, but it doesn't exist anymore. The successor is the FSB, and it did the Russian hacking that occurred in 2016. (I am almost determined to put "FACT" here.) BTW, the Tsarist secret police in Russia created the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. So, scary secret police committing disinformation in Russia goes back a long time, even before communism.
http://www.businessinsider.com/russian- ... ce-2017-12

But I think the training he got in the KGB does help him particularly in one area, the management of foreign assets, which he seems to be doing marvelously with Trump.

Kakistocracy, literally rule by shitheads, means a system where the worst and/or least qualified people end up running things. Very big in the French Revolution until the factions got done guillotining one another.

The KGB was broken up, and its expertise split up into several agencies. The intelligence assets are FSB (domestic intelligence), GRU (military intell), and SVR (civilian foreign intelligence). FSB got the computer hacking/ disinfo expertise, and it has been helping the other two do their things abroad.

If anything, the Russians are even better at this sort of thing than when there was a USSR. As you say, there is a tradition here that goes back at least to the czars, and they are indeed very good at it.

Are these accusations or have they been proved? If they have been proved then will officials from the NRA be charged with a crime?

Since the President and the Attorney General has taken hundred of thousands of dollars from the NRA, no, they will never be charged with a crime.

With glen you might want to use words with fewer than one syllable.

Unless it's a Clinton, and to glen they are guilty, guilty GUILTY, no proof needed. You only need to prove it when it's conservatives. And even then glen won't believe it.

Glen believes that Thom Hartmann is a dangerous subversive. Skinny little Thom, sitting up there on FSTV or RT or whatever, with the worst chroma-key background ever designed, quoting the Constitution and plugging his books.

He'd be really on about cool little Arundahti Roy, going on the radio and saying international billionaire economic imperialism is the problem. Better not tell him she exists. Oops, too late.

All Hartmann does is plug one his books. He is very boring and not at all entertaining. He is hardly a Communist but like Ed Schultz he spent time RT.

BTW, he is off RT at this point.

Big Picture on RT is now hosted by Holland Cooke.

Thom is still doing his radio program, I think the video of it is still on FSTV (*), or you can hear it on the radio, but he's no longer using RT studios or has any other affiliation.

Ed Schultz is still on. And directly. It's not like Thom, where he was just using studio equipment and space. He's "embedded" in regular RT-America programming.
https://www.rt.com/shows/news-with-ed-schultz/

I know this was an Ed-board at one point. ;)

P.S. I like Thom's occasional digressions into the evolutionary origins of ADHD, or the historical significance of various events, or topics like that, but I understand why people can find it boring. :D

He's not as bad as Lionel used to be - if you can remember him from Air America days. It often took days for Lionel to get back on to political topics. Lionel would digress and take a very long time finding his way back to his audience.

One other thing I like about Thom is he will bring on right wingers to debate them. Not to just use as foils, but to actually debate ideas with them. It's not all just yelling and screaming like Crossfire either. I understand this is also not everybody's cup of tea, but I like it.

(*) Which I can now get on my Apple TV (directly, without using AirPlay, since it now has an app), thanks guys, a cornucopia of video episodes of him, Stephanie Miller, and David Pakman.

He'd be really on about cool little Arundahti Roy,

I'm a fan. She was one of the founders of the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre (Brazil) in 2001, the antipode to where Trump is going this week, the World Economic Forum, at Davos.

World Economic Forum brings together "captains of industry" to chart the future of the globe. WSF actually invites everybody to have this same discussion ('globalization from below') since these decisions should not just be left to global economic and political elites.

Anyway, there's that great quote. I always have to share.

Image

I'm a sucker for visionaries.

Ike may be right on the future of the world. I'm just not giving up on hope that Arundhati and Gene Roddenberry could be, too.
