I saw him in Gainesville for an appearance at UF, I think it was around 1994 IIRC.

He talked about writing new Trek novels (which he was doing at the time), his recent roles in TekWar, why he honestly is not the evil guy who hates nerds at Trek conventions he once portrayed on SNL, and why he loved Gene Roddenberry's techno-optimism about the future.

The local area Trek club had some of their folks show up in Starfleet uniform. It was glorious.

Gotta also post this clip. Just because it's hilarious.

www.youtube.com Video from : www.youtube.com

He has a kind of rivalry still going on with George Takei, Takei says Shatner skipped out on his (gay) wedding, Shatner says it was due to unavoidable prior commitments, Takei often says on Stern that Shatner was a huge scene hog/stealer in original Trek, constantly went to Roddenberry to rewrite screen plays so he would get more screen time, and the 'lessers' like Takei would get less.

It's kind of shocking, some people feel, that he outlived both DeForrest Kelley and Leonard Nimoy, but so far, not Takei.

Hah! That's funny.

You know, Shatner takes a lot of shit but I've always liked his acting in Star Trek.

Did you ever read about Shatner and Nimoy not liking each other until later in the 70s? There was a funny story I was reading, about Shatner being away from the set, and Nimoy was getting rave reviews for a mind meld performance. When Shatner got back he heard about it and insisted on Nimoy redo the scene so he could see what people were raving about.

Nimoy did the scene with full emotion, and during one of his lines, something about the"the great pain" or something, Shatner blurted out "Someone get that man an aspirin!"

Nimoy was totally pissed.

He talks a little bit about that, here.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/ ... bed-864547

Seems like they had some rift close to Nimoy's death, also, although Shatner doesn't seem to fully understand it, and in any case he is now working with his son.

Pennsylvania lawmaker Brian Ellis faces calls to resign over sexual assault claim

The Pennsylvania House’s Republican leaders have stripped a lawmaker of his committee post and want him to resign following media reports Dauphin County prosecutors are investigating him for an alleged sexual assault.

The lawmaker is Rep. Brian Ellis, a 49-year-old Republican from Butler County. He was first elected in 2004 and had been chairman of the House’s Consumer Affairs Committee.

Lack of charges in Kiah Morris case sparks questions

The question is being asked nationally by such news outlets as the Washington Post: “How, in an overwhelmingly white state, should Vermonters confront the type of racial harassment potent enough to push its only black female representative out of the legislature?”

And internationally by the likes of the BBC: “Kiah Morris case: How far do free speech protections go in the US?”

I thought ugh as well. But I noticed from the article that her harassment began in 2014.

The article is biased, it doesn't mean it's wrong about the details, the details are expressed in support of a cause. I was noticing that as I read and so I was thinking of epistemology. What do we know how do we know it.

I know I'm biased about Bernie, wary that I could in support of a cause see the possibility in this that Bernie might share tendencies in common his with his state's legislators.

Mustn't do that. :)

I suspect her harassment may have multiplied once Trump gained the WH, since 2014 was when she was first in office. Whatever the details are, it's another bit of ugliness in our "Perfect Union."

Trump has a way of escalating bad things.

Roy, a hydrated double sulfate salt of aluminum or potassium is a useful thing for tanning hides or getting a pucker up. But is has four letter not very marketable name, alum. I was thinking change that name, Trump likes that, rename that alum substance, Trump.

I'm looking forward to a time when folks will be sitting around the home talking all about what a box of Trump will do, they'll pause and someone will say "but be careful Trump will corrode steel."

Heh heh. Alum's too useful to apply it as a "Trumpnomer."

I'd like to suggest "Promp," which is Norwegian for "fart." It's both disgusting and sounds somewhat like his given name. Plus it describes his type of oration.

:)

I'm again not sure why this is in the "Big Perv" thread ... I think AP sometimes uses it as a bit of a catch-all. She never said anything about sexual harassment ... but yes, racial harassment.

I would need more information, but it certainly doesn't seem to me like all these actions against her would lawfully fall under the 1st amendment.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45661176

Kiah Morris, the only black woman in the Vermont legislature, shocked the US state when she resigned last month, citing ongoing racial harassment. Even in one of the most progressive states in America, she says white supremacy and a toxic political discourse are serious, unacknowledged problems.

Kiah Morris was puzzled. Why did friends on social media keep sending her links to a Saturday Night Live comedy video? Then she watched it.

In the sketch, which aired the last weekend of September, a group of Southern neo-Confederates discuss resettling in place with "no immigrants and no minorities - an agrarian community where everyone lives in harmony because every single person is white".

One member, played by actor Adam Driver, raises his hand.

"Yeah, I know that place," he says. "That sounds like Vermont."

In 2014 Ms Morris became only the second black female member ever elected to the Vermont state legislature. Four years later, in the midst of a re-election race, she resigned from public office after repeatedly being the target of racial harassment.

She received death threats. Her property was vandalised. She found swastikas painted on the trees near her house.

She obtained a restraining order against a repeat online harasser, but the threats continued.

[snip]

As she began her campaign, however, it became very clear that her ethnicity - in a state that is 95% white and 1.2% black - was going to be an issue.
"We received online threats," she says. "We received hateful messages. We had things happen at our home. We had a break-in while we were asleep."

She adds that she wasn't the only member of a minority in the state to experience such harassment - and she says it's only got worse since Donald Trump's victory in the highly contentious 2016 presidential race.

[snip]

It was her support for a comprehensive gun control bill, however - passed in April 2018 - that brought the harassment and threats to an intolerable level. She says opponents of the gun law, which strengthened background checks and banned large magazines and bump stocks, cited her as the "voice and face" of out-of-state efforts that they said would eventually lead to firearm confiscation.

"It did not escape my attention that that type of behaviour, doing that type of a clarion call, could get me killed," she says. "It was solely directed at me, as the black woman."

So in August Ms Morris, after winning the Democratic primary, decided to abandon her re-election bid. When that didn't stop the harassment, she resigned from the legislature, effective immediately.

[snip]

"They win when you leave it up to a movement messiah to be the one to move the work forward," (*) Ms Morris says. "They win when you place it squarely on my shoulders as somehow this emblematic person.
"The change has to happen from each and every one of us because the work is that enormous. It cannot be an ask and it is wrong to ask anyone to place themselves in that type of a circumstance.
"So I win because I chose to take my life back."

[snip][end]

(*) I think this is aimed at someone also from Vermont, but as I don't read minds, yes, we need to be careful of epistemological error.
To be fair, the other article said Bernie has been supporting her. Well, I think his candidacy would have problems if he didn't.

OK. With the details we've been given so far - awful messages on social media, sending her rude videos, even online harassment, showing up wearing a Pepe the Frog T-shirt, might be covered by the 1st amendment. It's our system. It does protect racist and offensive speech.

I'm not sure the 1st amendment protects vandalism, death threats, break-ins. Of course, I don't know the results of investigations of all these incidents.

Looks like the final escalation came when she dared to support gun control in Vermont. Looks like a state third rail, maybe especially for a lawmaker of color, it seems.

I agree with her final remarks. Don't just focus on her choice. Focus on the system and why it failed her.

This is Max Misch. He showed up at her press conference in the Pepe T-shirt. Max clearly likes to work out.

Anyway, I should add Max is a self-admitted white nationalist, says he loves trolling (of course), and feels she cannot represent his community because of her race, speaking of 'identity politics'.

Rep. Jackie Speier nominates Dr. Christine Blasey Ford for 2019 Profile in Courage Award

Rep. Jackie Speier of California has announced that she is nominating Dr. Christine Blasey Ford for the 2019 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award.

Ford is the Palo Alto University psychology professor who, in 2018, alleged that Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh attempted to rape her at a party in Maryland when they were college students back in 1982. Kavanaugh vehemently denied the accusation and was narrowly confirmed by the U.S. Senate—mostly along party lines. Most Senate Democrats voted against Kavanaugh’s confirmation, and most Senate Republicans voted in favor of President Donald Trump’s nominee.

A conservative Christian running for Wisconsin Supreme Court just said he thinks homosexuality equates to ‘bestiality’

In 37 states across America state supreme court judges are elected, or appointed and then later have to run to keep their jobs. Either way, the voters get to choose, which many legal experts believe is a very bad idea, because it is.

However, in Wisconsin, hopefully it will be a good idea, just once, come April, when voters can either elect a progressive jurist or a partisan hack who authored former Governor Scott Walker’s highly controversial Budget Repair Bill of 2011. You’ll remember that’s when Walker falsely claimed a state emergency to bust up public sector unions.

Top Schumer Aide Was Pushed Out After Inappropriate Sexual Encounters With Staff

When Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s longtime communications director Matt House announced he was leaving just after November’s midterm elections, the news was met with widespread bipartisan praise for House and his reputation for fairness. But some of House’s Senate colleagues were surprised to learn of his departure, given that he did not have a high-profile job lined up and that Democrats could regain control of the Senate in 2020.

House’s departure, however, was not voluntary. HuffPost has learned, through two sources with knowledge of the situation, that House was pushed out for allegedly having inappropriate sexual encounters with junior staffers, ending what was a nearly six-year tenure as communications director for the New York Democrat. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak to a reporter about the allegations.

Hundreds of accused abusers named by Catholic leaders in Texas

DALLAS — Catholic leaders in Texas on Thursday identified 286 priests and others accused of sexually abusing children, a number that represents one of the largest collections of names to be released since an explosive grand jury report last year in Pennsylvania.

Fourteen dioceses in Texas named those credibly accused of abuse. The only diocese not to provide names, Fort Worth, did so more than a decade ago and then provided an updated accounting in October.

Victim-blaming judge calls girls the ‘aggressors’ in sex assault case against 67-year-old man

A Kansas judge has called a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old the “aggressors” in an encounter with a 67-year-old man, the Kansas City Star reports.

This occurred after the man reportedly solicited the young girls on the Internet. District Judge Michael Gibbens sentenced Raymond Soden to five years and 10 months in prison, eight years less than Kansas sentencing guidelines. He noted that the girls had voluntarily gone to his house. The age of consent in Kansas is 16.

Trump judicial nominee backs away from remarks on date rape

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s nominee to replace Brett Kavanaugh on a high-profile appeals court backed away from language she used as a college student in writing about sexual assault, race and equal rights for women.

“To be honest, looking back at some of those writings ... I cringe at some of the language I used,” Neomi Rao told the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday, adding that writings in which she criticized affirmative action and suggested that intoxicated women were partly responsible for date rape do not reflect her current thinking.
