The reason behind #Iran’s increasing floods is the deforestation of more 30% of the northern forests, the destruction of vegetation in pastures and fields..., the by those affiliated with the government, and the construction on the river.

The flood crisis in #Iran and the apathetic ruling regime
#IranFloods disaster proves that the ruling mullahs’ criminal 40-year policy of plunder & pillage has taken a heavy toll on the lives & livelihood of our people in every flood & earthquake
@CanadaFP

Iran Freedom-En‏ @4freedominiran2
The damage caused by the flood disaster in #Iran has destroyed all the assets of the people. But government officials, instead of sympathizing with the victims, shamelessly claimed that the flood was washing trees & storing drinking water in the dams. #IranFlood #IranRegimeChange

Lots of damage to people in the aftermath of the disaster in Iran--
The flood victims in Iran are severely complaining about the government's lack of action. They consider the mismanagement and destruction of nature by the IRGC as the main cause of flood damage.

The real story behind Donald Trump’s phony Baku hotel
Isabel Stamm | 10:30 pm EDT February 17, 2019
Trump has apparently discovered the joys of online translation apps and has posted what is probably the first tweet by an American president in the Persian language. Using the hashtag #40YearsofFailure, Trump denounced the corruption and cruelty of the Iranian regime that has brought suffering and misery to its people and has been instrumental in spreading terror around the globe. Throughout his candidacy and also his presidency, Trump has always been a vocal critic of the mullahs, opting for confrontation rather than cooperation when he unilaterally declared the Iran Nuclear Deal null and void. But is Trump, the businessman, as much of an anti-Iranian purist as Trump, the president?

A rather disturbing answer to that question may lie on the shores of the Caspian Sea, in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan. It’s a rather complicated and multi-layered story. The first layer is that in 2012, team Trump officially joined a project to build and develop what was meant to become the Trump International Hotel & Tower in a not-yet-developed part of Baku; a project that has all the markings of a money laundering operation.

The Trump Organization’s partners on the Azerbaijani side were members of the Mammadov family – the family of a wealthy and powerful oligarch...

'Potentially historic' winter storm to slam central U.S.

April 10 (Reuters) - Blizzards and windstorms will punish the U.S. Plains and Midwest on Wednesday as a powerful late winter storm threatens more flooding in areas like South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and farms along the Missouri River.

High spring temperatures will give way to heavy snow, gale-force winds and life-threatening conditions across a swath of the central United States running from the Rockies to the Great Lakes, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The first picture of a black hole opens a new era of astrophysics

This is what a black hole looks like.

A world-spanning network of telescopes called the Event Horizon Telescope zoomed in on the supermassive monster in the galaxy M87 to create this first-ever picture of a black hole.

L.A. had one of the wake up calls that it does so well at 4:30 this morning. 2.8 under Century City (old abandoned oil patch).

L.A. was so nice for about a week, why'd it have to change? Incessant wind storms that knock out the power. One after another. Just like last year in April. It appears that, at this stage of climate change, April is indeed the cruelest month.

Everyone's depressed, allergic, or usually both.

And it still seems better than what's happening in the rest of the US, which is even more depressing.

Game of Thrones was about the horror of fossil fuels all along

I have eagerly awaited the final season of Game of Thrones, and its strange blend of fictive medieval Britain, supernatural monsters and pornography. Over the seasons the plot has gained speed and focus while the pornography has vanished and – incredible as it seems – we can also detect that George R.R. Martin’s fantastic story has a message. Perhaps we can explain its enormous success by considering how, at a subconscious, dreamlike level, it deals with humanity’s most profound problem.

I want to believe that my interpretation is more than a pathetic attempt to legitimise all those hours of passive TV-watching. Just as the great anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss was able to expose central problems of specific Amerindian peoples by analysing their myths, we can analyse our own tales in order to discern the contradictions and apparently unsolvable dilemmas that torment our subconscious.

'Large and Dangerous' Tornadoes Hit South; Dozens Injured, 2 Children Killed By Downed Tree

Powerful storms moved through the South Saturday, killing at least three people and spawning several tornadoes, including several "large and dangerous" twisters that left significant damage and caused dozens of injuries in East Texas.

The Angelina County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that two children, aged 3 and 8, were killed Saturday after a tree fell on the vehicle they were in during a severe storm, KTRE reported.

Online trolls are harassing a scientist who helped take the first picture of a black hole

It’s so easy to be excited about Katie Bouman. She’s the 29-year-old computer scientist whose utter glee at seeing a black hole for the first time was captured in a picture that warmed hearts around the world.

Bouman, soon to be an assistant professor at Caltech, led one of the four teams tasked with turning data on half a ton of hard drives into the picture that ricocheted around the world on Wednesday.

They harass everyone who does anything and isn't a young straight white male.

Even if you are a YSWM, they might turn on you anyway if they see a weakness. It's the same culture as 12 year old kids in the school yard. Tribal and ruthless, identifying its victims and turning on them en masse.

We need to fix this. It's already corroded our politics, and it's making life itself a bigger pain in the ass than it has to be.

Did a tornado hit the Southern Tier? Weather service investigating

Update: The weather service has concluded that a microburst, not a tornado, hit Conklin this morning with winds of up to 70 mph.

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The National Weather Service office in Binghamton are trying to find out today if tornadoes hit last night in northern Pennsylvania and New York’s Southern Tier.

TV meteorologist responds to viewer death threats she received after interrupting Masters final round

As the highly anticipated final round of the 2019 Masters tournament unfolded on Sunday in Augusta, Georgia, millions of golf fans tuned in to watch the drama unfold on television.

But while the tournament was winding down, a major severe weather outbreak continued across the southern United States, before eventually extending into the Northeast. The weather contributed to Masters officials starting the final round earlier than normal on TV due to the threat.

Wow, that's an overenthusiastic viewer.

Contrast that to not watching the damned thing at all. I don't care who won because I don't really even know who the golfers are.

The reason I don't care is because years ago after trying several times I came to the conclusion that I was not, and would never be welcome on a golf course in any capacity other than providing service.

I was welcome to come to their aid when their refrigeration or air conditioning broke down in the club building. "Come fix it now, then leave."

Buildings shake, schools evacuated as quake hits east Taiwan

TAIPEI, April 18 (Reuters) - An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck Taiwan's coastal city of Hualien on Thursday, shaking buildings and temporarily suspending subway services in the capital Taipei, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

Lightning strike at Acropolis, Greece, injures four

Athens (AFP) - A lightning strike injured four people Wednesday at the Acropolis in Athens, which was closed for the rest of the day, the Greek culture ministry said.

The bolt hurt two tourists and two Greeks when it struck a lightning rod near the small Erechtheion temple to the north of the famous Parthenon, a ministry spokeswoman told AFP.

New York City Just Passed Historic Climate Legislation—Its Own Green New Deal

The nation’s largest and most economically influential city passed a historic bill Thursday capping climate-changing pollution from big buildings and mandating unprecedented cuts to greenhouse gases.

The City Council approved the legislation in a 45-to-2 vote Thursday afternoon, all but ensuring its passage by a mayor eager to burnish his climate bona fides ahead of a potential run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020.

Flint residents ‘will get their day in court’ after Federal judge rules they can sue EPA over water crisis

As Flint, Michigan, marks five years since the city’s deadly water crisis began, a federal judge ruled in favor of residents who want to sue the federal government for not acting promptly to ensure the city had clean drinking water.

Residents filed suit against the EPA in 2017, demanding $722 million in damages and arguing that the agency was able to inform the city that its drinking water was contaminated months before it finally issued an emergency order.

Hurricane Michael confirmed as Category 5, first since Hurricane Andrew in 1992

Scientists have confirmed that Hurricane Michael was a Category 5 storm when it made landfall in Florida, the National Hurricane Center confirmed Friday.

The upgraded status means Michael was the first hurricane to make landfall in the United States as a Category 5 since Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and only the fourth on record.
