Judge: Feds can end housing aid for Puerto Rican evacuees

BOSTON — A judge says the federal government can end a temporary housing vouching program for Puerto Rican hurricane evacuees.

Judge Timothy Hillman on Thursday denied an effort to force the government to continue providing aid that has allowed evacuees to live in hotels in the U.S.

'Weather models have flipped the switch': Hurricane season coming to life in the Atlantic

The sleeping giant may be about to awaken.

Hurricane activity in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico is forecast to ramp up over the next couple of weeks. "Weather models have flipped the switch on the Atlantic hurricane season and see multiple areas of development possible, starting mainly this weekend," weather.us meteorologist Ryan Maue said.

Yup, the storm track was late forming, but it's here now. They gave a wave that's still off Africa a 90% chance. Those are the ones that form into your category 4s and 5s. Right now the models take it out to sea, though.

It's that time of year, after all. The statistical peak is about two weeks from today, but the decay is slower than the rise.

Flash flooding wreaks havoc, swamping major roads and train tracks in Susquehanna Valley

An unusual and intense band of stationary rain slammed parts of the Susquehanna Valley on Friday causing severe flash flooding.

The rainfall amounts varied drastically depending on location. In Harrisburg, amounts totaled around .3 inches. Just 13 miles away in Mount Joy, more than 10.5 inches of rain fell.

this is one of those simple ideas: IF YOU DONT WEAR A HAT YOU WILL GET A SUN BURN.
apply that to snow.

this study is about the opposite of accurate info, of course it would, its coming from zinke
and his corp co-horts. zinke fucked with EVERY thing EVERY word DeptForestry is allowed to say write
or store for info for the public.
now theyre literally making shit up to confuse the public. as example:

YOU CANT HAVE LESS RAIN W/O HAVING DROUGHTS.
https://www.rawstory.com/2018/08/study- ... wildfires/
Study cites longer dry spells as fueling US wildfires--DUH
Less rain and longer droughts are the major cause behind larger and more intense wildfires  in the U.S. West,
not higher temperatures and early snowmelt as previously thought, according to research released on Monday.
[YOU CANT HAVE HIGHER TEMPS AND EARLY SNOWMELT UNLESS YOU CUT DOWN ALL THE TREES THAT SHIELDED SNOW
WHILE IT MELTED IN THE GROUND VS EVAP-ING INTO THE AIR.
snow plus sun minus pines = EVAPORATION. WHAT THE FUCK PEOPLE.]

The findings by the U.S. Forest Service and University of Montana(ZINKE GROPER-SPEAK) could help scientists better predict the severity of fire seasons,FIRE SEASON IS YEAR ROUND DUE TO CLEAR CUTTING, GO PREDICT THAT. said the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.THERE ARE NO TREES DO YOU THINK ITS JUST GONNA GET BETTER????

.."early snowmelt"....there is NO early snow melt. there is EARLY EVAPORATION.
higher temps come from clear cutting, the exposure of Land to burning suns rays.
land with NO tree cover becomes desert dust.

The fires are completely caused by persistent drought, and that's all there is to it. I live here, or more precisely I'm stuck here, because we probably couldn't make it full time in New York. I've watched this situation deteriorate for years. It's the same thing in greater L.A., though the fuel is scrub brush rather than timber.

Rain describes the situation the way it is.

California always had drought and flood cycles, but now the drought seems to be winning. We all know why. The problem is threefold. The causes for the current climate apocalypse in CA are:

1. Men.
2. Women.
3. Children.

You load the gun by having too many people, too much exploitation, the wrong kind of logging (clearcutting instead of thinning), and generally wretched forest management. Then you dump a kazillion megatons of gases into the atmosphere and change the weather. Then you let cities grow out into forest land. Then some arsonist, or downed power line, or (in the Carr fire) flat tire makes sparks. It never takes many. It catches the dead grass, which catches the dead and dying trees, and off we go with another 300 thousand acre fire and 1000 more buildings destroyed.

It's too late to fix it. Mitigation is all we can do.

Tropical Storm Gordon is dumping rain on Florida, and getting stronger as it eyes Mississippi

Tropical Storm Gordon is centered just off the coast of Marco Island in southern Florida on Monday afternoon, dumping rain on the peninsula and whipping its shores with 50 mph winds.

Heading northwest at 16 mph, the National Hurricane Center predicts Gordon could strengthen to a hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico before it likely makes landfall in Mississippi early Wednesday.

In a changing climate, will fire make a bigger run in Washington’s west-side forests?

GREENWATER, Pierce County — On a remote ridge, the hemlock, silver and noble firs stood for several centuries, nurtured by deep winter snow and drenching rains. Then last year, amid the searing August temperatures, the Norse Peak fire on the east side of the Cascades pushed over the range’s crest and engulfed this stand, killing most of these trees.

Now the charred trunks rise like ghostly sentinels in a forest littered with charcoal, which still gives off whiffs of the smoke that billowed from the 55,909-acre blaze. This austere burn zone is a typical aftermath to intense fires that, over the course of centuries, periodically feast upon the huge amounts of wood that grow in the west-side forests of our region.

Japan hit by strongest typhoon in 25 years

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-45406857

Quote:
Japan has been hit by its strongest typhoon in 25 years, causing at least six deaths and 160 injuries.

Typhoon Jebi made landfall in western areas, bringing heavy rain and reports of winds up to 172km/h (107mph).

In Osaka Bay it swept a tanker into a bridge and in Kyoto parts of a railway station roof came down.

Officials ordered more than a million people in affected areas to evacuate their homes amid warnings of high waves, flooding and mudslides.

Hurricane Florence could threaten the East Coast

Forecast trends suggest that Hurricane Florence, which is currently swirling away as a Category 3 storm in the open Atlantic, could make a run at the East Coast by early next week — though there's still a great deal of uncertainty.

What we're watching: Weather patterns across the Atlantic as well as a broader cycle of atmospheric circulation, known as the Madden-Julian Oscillation, are combining to make the Atlantic far more favorable to storm development than it has been all season.

Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Strikes Northern Japan Near Major City

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake rocked Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido early Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake's epicenter is about 40.3 miles southeast of Sapporo, a major metropolitan area of 1.9 million people, and 17 miles east of the city of Tomakomai, which has a population of about 175,000. The tremor struck around 3 a.m. local time and at a depth of 21 miles.

Hurricanes Olivia And Norman Forecast: Storms Sitting In The Pacific Near Hawaii

Hawaii already had one hurricane to worry about to the east of the islands, but now there’s another storm heading in its direction.

Hurricane Norman is officially a major hurricane in the Pacific Basin, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 115 miles per hour. That makes it a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. A map on Wednesday showed Norman to the east of Hawaii, but the most it was expected to do to the islands was generated large swells across them.

This time of the year in the Pacific, you get these incredible lines of Category 3+ hurricanes all marching along the 17th parallel. Except this year, they seem to be veering farther north of there.

Florence forecast to restrengthen to a major hurricane before threatening US

(CNN) Hurricane Florence has weakened to a tropical storm but will likely strengthen again into a major hurricane and could threaten the US East Coast by next week.

On Wednesday, Florence became the first major hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season, with maximum sustained winds peaking at 130 mph, making it a Category 4 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.

GOP stonewalling as usual.

US accused of blocking UN climate talks amid protests

Bangkok (AFP) - The United States, despite withdrawing from a landmark accord aimed at curbing climate change, is stonewalling vital UN talks over how to fund poorer nations as they battle against global warming, multiple sources told AFP Saturday.

US President Donald Trump caused global outrage by announcing the US would withdraw from the Paris Accord, but the decision cannot formally take effect until least 2020 and Washington has vowed to take part in climate negotiations to protect its interests.

The Atlantic is not a pretty sight. Hurricanes getting their acts together all the way back to Africa. The Pacific is about the same. HI is getting ready for another event of some sort. Anytime they move the AF Reserve TEAL missions ("Hurricane Hunters") into the Pacific, you know it's big.
