Indonesia tsunami: Death toll rises sharply as desperation grows

Quote:
Desperation is growing in the stricken Indonesian city of Palu as residents faced a fifth day with little food or clean drinking water and the official death toll mounted in the wake of Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The number of people killed had risen to 1,234 on Tuesday, Indonesia's national disaster agency said, including Monday's grim discovery of 34 bodies, mostly children, in a church recreation hall in Sigi Biromaru south of Palu...............

of course this 'paper', these 'conferences' dont deal with deforestation in fact they barely
mention it. instead they prefer the burying of corp carbon in the ground so TREES NEVER GROW BACK.

this shit just gets better. theyre sucking the Ogallala aquifer DRY by FRACKING
now they want to bury the fucking filth they spew in the ground where the water lives
all becuz theyve cut down all the trees. trees that used to suck up the carbon.

Does seem like the koch bros have done a good job suppressing the whole idea of deforestation, even though it's the biggest problem after carbon emissions.

ive been saying its ten years for 11years now. so for me its 9years away before we here are
out of water and cant grow our own foods. you know, like the Sahara has become.

these folks are being overly optimistic.
they seem to --continue--- to think that slowing carbon from trucks will change everything back
to normal, or, what was 'better'.
it wont. its too late.

you would have to begin growing large conifer forests to relieve the air and atmosphere of the
carbon and toxic molecular shit we eat and inhale daily, carbon stuff the big conifers once filtered
for the human, like a gift.
but human said fuck that gift shit and cut down all the trees and forests that took 100's of years to grow.

then human shoved all its waste from plastics chemicals and rubber into the ocean to fuck it up becuz
that was easier then actually dealing with the tremendous human waste generated.
cruise ships, thats you. military, you too. walm you too.

in 12 years you cant do what people have been hollering about since the 60's. you Could Have
Done It All starting in the 60's but alas, the pale males wanted more wallst money so they said
fuck it, take it all.
now we are left with the end of the Anthropocene Era. the big slide downhill.
Merica first since merica did least to stop the destruction in fact encouraged it.

Papua New Guinea hit by 7 magnitude earthquake

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has struck remote New Britain island in Papua New Guinea, the United States Geological Survey said, though there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake hit about 200km (125 miles) south-west of the town of Rabaul at a depth of almost 40km, just before 7am local time (2100 GMT Wednesday).

no such thing as "energy independence" when you destroy locals and export the oil gas.
lying liars who lie.

NDakota is fucked over the Bakken fields and the incredible damage done to Every way of life.
next up texass who doesnt seem to GAF that all this oil is EXPORTED, not used here.
more money for the oil barons.

“Why are they destroying our beautiful desert oasis to send oil to Asia?”

As oil and gas exports surge, West Texas becomes the world’s ‘extraction colony’---
Texas Tribune

‘I just had to stop breathing’
The headaches come almost every day. Some mornings Suzanne Franklin wakes with a nose full of dried blood, her voice filled with gravel. Her husband Jim suffers from respiratory problems, too.

This isn’t normal for them. What’s happening all around their corner of West Texas isn’t either.

....the Texas Railroad Commission — which oversees oil and gas production, not railroads— issued more than 6,300 permits allowing companies to flare in the Permian.

....Companies on the Texas side of the Permian flared 95 billion cubic feet of gas in 2016 and 2017, according to an Environmental Defense Fund analysis of state data.

...Gas likely won’t begin flowing from the Permian to Mexico in two new pipelines until early next year,

...Pollutants the plant discharged over those months included 300 tons of lung-damaging sulfur dioxide.
One particularly troublesome gas flare at Waha regularly blows past its permitted 12-month limit for sulfur dioxide,....for example, it spewed 60 tons more than the limit.

...Last year, businesses in Texas counties atop the Permian reported pumping out 77,000 tons of pollutants during emission events, largely carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide. Sixteen of the 20 Texas counties with the highest levels of these unpermitted emissions were in the Permian,...

...Huge amounts of contaminant-laden wastewater — known as produced water — come up with the oil and gas. Companies have to do something with it, and they’ve mostly injected it back into the ground.

That’s causing earthquakes in some cases, scientists have found. More than 100 tremors with a magnitude of 2.5 or greater have hit the state since last year, nearly three-quarters of them in West Texas,
... hundreds of companies are drilling in the Permian. And the state doesn’t require recycling.(water)

...In the city of Midland, the average monthly rent for a two-bedroom unit tops $1,700, up 30 percent in the last year, ...

...Newcomers and even longtime residents are living in “man camps,” RV parks, hotel rooms and cars. Advocates for the homeless say they’re hearing about evictions and price gouging across the oil patch.

“It really just comes down to, if they’re not in [the oil and gas] industry, then they’re not going to be able to keep up,” said Erika Thomas, executive director of Odessa Links, a nonprofit that helps the homeless. “You have your teachers, your nurses, people who are working decent jobs, but they just can’t keep up with the cost of living.”

...Oil-related traffic is also chewing up pavement on roads and bridges that weren’t designed to carry such heavy loads. Texas Department of Transportation data show the increase in traffic brought by the boom has damaged more than 3,000 miles of state highways in Permian counties.

...Sand mines began popping up in West Texas’ Permian Basin region a year ago as an oil boom gained steam.

Then he put into words the fear of every town strapped to a rocket it can’t steer, powered by companies selling to the world: “If we do nothing, we’re going to be in even more trouble in 10 years.”

It goes round and round and they named it Leslie. I wonder if it sounded like Yankee Stadium going in.
