A Street In San Francisco Will No Longer Be Named After A Racist Past Mayor In Favor Of Frida Kahlo - Mitu

City College of San Francisco -- which is now free of charge -- already renamed the Phelan campus to Ocean Campus in the early '00s. A very famous mural by Diego Rivera also stands at CC.

Quote:
The street that will be changed is currently Phelan Avenue, named after former San Francisco Mayor James D. Phelan who governed the city between 1897 to 1902. While Phelan has been referred to as a multimillionaire philanthropist that supported artists and writers in San Francisco, he was also instrumental at issuing immigrants out of the city.

Phelan ran a notorious senate campaign (which he won) that had the slogan “Keep California White.”

In 1912, he wrote: “This is a whiteman’s country. We cannot make a homogeneous population out of people who do not blend with the Caucasian race.”

Several institutions do bear his name and students at various colleges in San Francisco have tried to remove it from their buildings.

S.F. Supervisor Norman Yee said he wants to change the name of Phelan Avenue after learning of Phelan’s racist past.

bye

Can't wait for California to rid all of our streets, national, and public parks of the names of these dyed-in-the-wool racist, immigrant-bashing, eugenicist, white conservatives.

Why am I not surprised that the extreme left wingers who reside and run San Francisco would name a street for a person who in 1927 joined the Mexican Communist Party. Who was married to a fellow communist.

Hats off to SF liberals for being so honest about who they are.

The party you vote for and support is in bed with the Kremlin/KGB, right now Glen. Right at this very moment. How does that make you feel?

Nice deflection, you seem to forget about current news that they were also helping Bernie and Stein. They were simply anti HRC. So how do you feel about SF taking the name of a racist who did not deserve the honor off of a street and renaming it for a communist.

Who is this you that you speak of, certainly not me. The fact is SF did the right thing by taking that guys name off the street. Then they turned around and made a mistake by naming for a person who is just a despicable.

Face facts: you're not getting the Confederacy back.

We've taken that away from you.

If you want to honor communist that is your right. Personally I don't want to honor racist or communist.

There you go again throwing out the anger claim. Nobody is angry about anything except maybe you being angry about your heroes being exposed for being commies.

I don't agree with her politics, but that doesn't make her despicable. And it certainly isn't comparable to being a racist. She was a feminist and well thought of as an artist.

And you know, you call people here communists and socialists all the time, or the "extreme left," just like Ted Cruz does. So therefore what you're really saying you think the people here are despicable. Why would people here want to converse with someone like yourself, that uses bullshit slurs and looks down on them?

And, your party is currently in bed with the "commies" but you will continue to vote for them.

BTW, glen, this leads into a much larger, broader discussion.

What if she was a great artist, her political views aside?

Image

How about we ignore what parties she did or did not belong to, and focus on the greatness of her art?

P.S. if you ever see the movie about her starring Selma Hayek - really distills a lot of things, including how much a douchebag Diego Rivera was to her, and how much physical pain defined her life (but may have lead to some great art). But I digress.

I am sure we could find artist to honor who weren't commies.

Ok. An extremely simplistic answer to a much deeper question. If we reject all art from all people whose political views are found wanting or lacking ... how far do we take that?

I get a bad jingoistic vibe from Robert Heinlein in Starship Troopers, personally (this is what the Verhoeven movie kind of makes fun of) ... wouldn't reject all of his science fiction writing because of it.

Orson Scott Card has some political views that really rub me the wrong way, but I won't reject his masterpiece Ender's Game because of it.

Yo Glen, don't forget that she also married the guy who had harbored Leon Trotsky in Mexico.

Commie, glen, commie commie commie commie. Communist. Card carrying.

She made definitive art, and is considered a candidate for sainthood by some people down there. If you knew the politics of some of your favorite writers and directors, you'd stop going to the movies. As long as they don't advocate killing all nonwhites and Jews, who cares?

Context, Glen, context. It was the 1930s. You can't think about it like an American in the 2010s. It was a different country, a different time in history, a different economic situation, and a different set of circumstances. There was no monolithic communist bloc. In fact, Trotsky got the Russian hit job treatment, like the one the other day in Salisbury, only the agents used a ice axe instead of some nasty substances that weren't discovered yet. And Mexico as a country was very much the way the billionaires would love the US to be.

I know, this is probably a waste of my time. Go back to fearing that Bolshevik under your bed with the black robe and silly round bomb.

(edited by Z to correct the location of the latest Russian spy hit job)

There's always the SF writer A.E. van Vogt. He thought access to firearms was the only thing keeping us free. Or there's always Adolf Hitler. He was a semi-pro painter in Austria.

I've seen that guy's paintings. He said Jewish art critics in Germany were the ones who prevented him from succeeding in the art world.

Uh, nah, that was one of a myriad of things he was wrong about.

It's just sad he went from failed artist to being successful mass murderer and genocidalist. (And, for the record, even if he was a good artist, that's a point where I would draw a line.)

P.S. we all know "W" is a painter these days, right?

W is an even worse painter than Hitler, and Hitler was by no means a good painter. His skills were passable, but his visual ideas were small.

Frida Kahlo was a much better painter, and her visual ideas were enormous.

glen says she's a commie, so nothing else matters.

Of course, he voted 3 times for the white supremacist Strom Thurmond, but that's okay.

Strom Thurmond would have been an extremely lousy painter.
