California lawmakers mull ways to make police liable for deaths like Stephon Clark's

Sacramento, Calif. -- California legislators are exploring ways to make police liable for deaths related to the use of lethal force. This comes after investagators concluded that the officers who shot and killed Stephon Clark last year did not commit a crime. Clark was unarmed at the time of his death.

Council to its streets, shouts of "Stephon Clark" have pitted police against the community. The shooting death of 22-year-old Clark by Sacramento police last year -- and other high-profile shootings of unarmed black men -- have also pivoted elected officials to introduce legislation to make police criminally liable for such deaths.

So they're mulling it over are they. Someone thinks they can define deaths like Stephon Clark's. Mulling sure is the correct word for what they're trying to do.

Cases like Stephon Clark's are the ones which squeezed through the cracks in the legal code. They have to define it in order that they may write new criminal legal code to fill in that crack.

They're sure going to have to do a whole lot of mulling with this one big task before them, an industrial mulling machine might help. Might be a necessity due to the infinite volume space they have to mull.

Image

In case you're wondering how it works, it goes round and round in a counter clockwise direction in that steel tub. It doesn't grind, it squishes exceeding fine.

After they finish with that muller at the state capital they might want to loan the machine to the folks in Washington DC who are mulling over how to define an assault weapon so we can ban them. They've got a hell of a job before them too.

The first step in the best way to ban assault weapons is to call them something else.

Phoenix man accuses AMC theater of racial profiling after he's accused of sneaking in; his video goes viral

An accusation of racial profiling against AMC's Ahwatukee theater by a Phoenix man who posted cellphone videos of his encounter has sparked an outcry on social media and prompted some to call for a boycott of the movie-theater chain.

Larry Shelton, a movie-theater patron, says he was asked to leave the theater after being accused of not paying for a ticket and refusing to show his ticket to a security guard who approached him in the theater on Saturday.

Collaborative effort involves 33 newsrooms; Cleveland.com files suit; Denver wants to take it back

News organizations typically compete against one another. But in California, 33 news outlets have done something previously unimaginable. They are joining forces. Why? To root out bad behavior by the police.

The news organizations have formed a coalition, announced Tuesday, to obtain police documents to share with each other and, more importantly, the public. They are calling it the California Reporting Project, and it includes the Southern California News Group, the Los Angeles Times, KQED, KPPC, the Press Democrat, the Sacramento Bee and other McClatchy papers, and the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley. The coalition’s goal is to expose “rogue police officers” and the agencies that have tolerated such behavior. Examples include a cop stealing thousands of bullets, officers using illegal force, and officials lying on police reports and concocting trumped-up charges against citizens.

VIDEO: Black woman brutally beat by armed white man in parking lot dispute — as bystanders do nothing

A black Texas woman whose brutal beating by a white bartender was captured on video described to a local news station what it felt like to be so viciously attacked.

In an interview with Dallas’ WFAA, 24-year-old L’Daijohnique Lee said bartender Austin Shuffield beat her up and threatened her at gunpoint in the Deep Ellum suburb after she accidentally blocked a parking lot exit.

White cop cleared in fatal shooting of black teenager

PITTSBURGH — A jury acquitted a white former police officer Friday in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager as he was fleeing a high-stakes traffic stop outside Pittsburgh, a confrontation that was captured on video and led to weeks of unrest.

Former East Pittsburgh Police Officer Michael Rosfeld was charged with homicide for shooting Antwon Rose II in the back last June. Rose was riding in an unlicensed taxi that had been involved in a drive-by shooting when Rosfeld pulled the car over and shot the 17-year-old in the back, arm and side of the face as he ran away.

They found the cop innocent after only four hours of deliberations. Convicting a Cop is damn near impossible.

With unified voice, Missouri Supreme Court signals an end to debtors prison scheme

Quote:
...........On Tuesday, the Missouri Supreme Court, in a unanimous opinion written by Judge Mary Russell, ruled that such hearings are illegal. No longer, the court said in one voice, can judges in Missouri threaten indigent defendants with jail time for their inability to be able to afford jail “board bills” charged by most rural counties in the state.

“While persons are legally responsible for the costs of their board bills under (state law), if such responsibilities fall delinquent, the debts cannot be taxed as court costs and the failure to pay that debt cannot result in another incarceration,” the court wrote.

The ruling upends a decades-old practice that had turned many county jails in Missouri into de facto debtors prisons. The cases, brought by Matthew Mueller, the senior bond litigation counsel for the Missouri State Public Defenders Office, involve two defendants whose circumstances are similar to McNab’s, and hundreds, if not thousands, of other Missourians. One of them, George Richey of Appleton City, had, like McNab, been jailed for a failure to pay his jail bill. John Wright of Higginsville, Mo., has been called before a judge in Lafayette County 13 times to answer for his inability to make payments on his jail bill. Wright lives on federal disability payments.

“The circuit courts erred in taxing as court costs the board bills of Richey and Wright, as express statutory authority permitting jail board bills to be taxed as court costs does not exist,” the court ruled. “The courts should not have required them to repeatedly appear to account for debts the courts could not legally designate as court costs, and, in Richey’s case, the circuit court should not have sent him back to jail for failing to make those payments.”.........

Black police chief in Virginia says resignation was forced, racially motivated

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — The first black woman to lead a city police department in Virginia said Monday that she was forced out, calling herself "no quitter" and accusing a small group of officers of "bias and acts of systemic racism, discriminatory practices and abuse of authority."

Tonya Chapman released a four-page statement a week after her abrupt resignation. It says her attempts to change the culture consistently were met with resistance from some people within the Portsmouth Police Department, some of whom "quite frankly did not like taking direction from an African American female."

Slur-spewing white men open fire on biracial children as they walk to a gas station to buy candy

A pair of white Florida men have been arrested after shooting at and shouting racial slurs at two biracial children — and claimed that they did so because they thought the kids were on meth.

Orlando’s WFTV reported that James Reidnauer and Brent van Besien were arrested in the city of Leesburg on hate crime charges after shooting at the 16 and 12-year-old brother and sister on March 17.

Black legal aid lawyer files complaint after court deputy detains him for impersonating himself

A legal aid attorney, Rashad James, filed a complaint against the Harford County Sheriff’s Office in Maryland. James says that on March 6, he was at the Harford County District Court in Bel Air—working, as lawyers do. While James’s client was not in the court with him that day, James was successful in arguing an expungement for his client. According to WBAL TV and Rashad James, that is when things became “surreal.”

"After the hearing, that's when I encountered the officer who incorrectly called me by the name of the client. I stated that I was not the client, that I was, in fact, the client's attorney," James said.

Former music executive blasts ‘racist as f*ck’ Billboard for keeping black singers out of country music

Country music star Lil Nas X was barred from the country music charts this week, despite his music fitting into the genre.

The song, “Old Town Road” was gaining traction after it went viral on TikTok app. It’s has clear undertones heard in country music but with the twist of a little hip-hop. While country music has been friendly to mash-ups in the past, it seems to be isolated to attractive, white female artists like Shania Twain or the Dixie Chicks.

'Police need to find a better way:' Officials want answers about black teen's traffic stop

Civil rights leaders and several Metro Council members said Thursday they were enraged by a traffic stop in which a teenager was pulled from his car, frisked and handcuffed last summer after an alleged minor traffic violation.

Councilwoman Jessica Green, who chairs the council’s public safety committee, said she has asked Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad to appear before Metro Council to answer questions about the stop of Tae-Ahn Lea and the department’s tactic of "hyper-policing" to fight violent crime in the West End.

Columbia student gets taken down in Barnard College library

https://twitter.com/andrwwang/status/11 ... 0680613889

Columbia and Barnard share library privs. But of course, that is not the actual issue, here.

6 officers, one guy.

Barnard public safety officers put on administrative leave following physical confrontation of black student - Columbia Spectator

Quote:
The six Barnard Public Safety officers involved in the physical confrontation of Alexander McNab, CC ‘19, have been placed on paid administrative pending investigation, Barnard administrators announced to students on Friday evening.

A little after 11 p.m. Thursday, officers followed McNab into the Milstein Center for Teaching and Learning after he did not show his ID at the Barnard gates. More officers were called to the scene as McNab continued to decline to show his ID, and the confrontation culminated when two officers physically pinned him against a counter in in Peet’s Coffee. After McNab ultimately agreed, the officers confiscated his ID, saying they needed to verify that he was an active Columbia student.

In response to the incident, both Barnard and Columbia held listening sessions where students expressed concerns to administrators regarding what happened. The two also released statements, though the message from Barnard President Sian Beilock did not mention racism involved in the confrontation.

Later that evening, the deans of the School of Engineering and Applied Science, General Studies, and Columbia College released a second joint statement referencing anti-black racism and emphasizing the need for urgent response and discussion.

Glendora.

'Walmart Wendy': Woman calls cops on city worker for looking 'illegal' and 'creepy' - Yahoo Finance.

I really wish people would stop giving these individuals these cutesy names. They are going to get somebody killed by cop.

Quote:
A woman in a Glendora, Calif. Walmart parking lot showed her true colors when she was filmed going on a racist rant while asking police to "come get" a man who she claims looked "illegal."

On Monday, a Southern California Edison contract worker asked the woman to move her car so he could park the company truck straight. Instead of complying with the request, she rang the police and asked them to come to Walmart and arrest the city worker. At one point in the video, she asks the police dispatcher, "Do you live here? Are you from Africa?"

The video, shared on Facebook by a friend of the contractor, has already been shared nearly 5,000 times.

...

he bystander calls the woman racist, to which she responds that her father is black and she can't be racist. She also adds that her little nephew is "Italian, Mexican and aloha."
