Family members of unarmed black man shot by police sue city of Sacramento

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Family members of an unarmed young black man slain by two Sacramento policemen last year sued the officers and the city on Monday for wrongful death, claiming racial profiling and use of excessive force.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Sacramento by the parents, grandparents and children of shooting victim Stephon Clark, 22, seeks damages in excess of $20 million.

Marine veteran says Vallejo cop assaulted him for filming traffic stop

A U.S. Marine veteran and filmmaker says he was assaulted by a Vallejo police officer and suffered a concussion just for filming the officer from his front porch on Jan. 22.

Adrian Burrell, 28, posted video of the encounter to Facebook this morning and provided it to Bay City News. He has retained civil rights attorney John Burris, who called the case "egregious" and said the officer's use of force was "unnecessary and unreasonable."

Vallejo has a history of problem cops. Even before the city almost filed for bankruptcy. At one time gang violence there was over the top.

On the whole Vallejo is getting better, but dirty cops is not anything new.

MONTGOMERY — An Alabama police officer who shot and killed a man misidentified as a shooting suspect in a Hoover mall last year will not be criminally charged.

Cindy McCain calls cops because she saw a woman with a child of a different ethnicity.

Cindy McCain, the wife of the late Republican U.S. Senator John McCain, said that she prevented a human trafficking situation, but the claim was later denied by police, reported Arizona family News.

“I came in from a trip I’d been on and I spotted—it looked odd—it was a woman of a different ethnicity than the child, this little toddler she had, and something didn’t click with me,” she told KTAR Mac & Gaydos radio show. “I went over to the police and told them what I saw, and they went over and questioned her, and, by God, she was trafficking that kid,” she said.

Every stepparent in an interracial relationship (with white children)'s nightmare. Never had it happen to me, personally, but twice I was "mistaken" so-called for the goddamn nanny.

It's like...friends. This is 2015 (at the time). This is not 1915.

And glen wants to prattle on about "100 years ago..." same mentality persists, 100 years later.

This was stupid of Cindy McCain to do. Unless she observed the woman mistreating or abusing the child she should have just kept her mouth shut. This is 2019, not 1959 and multiracial families are not against the norm but are becoming more and more common. Society is accepting multiracial families as evidenced in TV commercials showing interracial marriages and families. If businesses are not accepting of multiracial families then they wouldn't show them in their ads because it would be bad for their business. Just as 15 years ago you wouldn't see a lesbian or gay couple on TV or in ads and now they are common place.

Cindy McCain needs to come into the 21st century.

Yes and I don't usually express "disappointment" about Republicans since I consider them to basically be social writeoffs, but one thing I did appreciate about her and Meghan back in 2008 was them participating in the No H8 campaign. I think it did a lot for getting more somewhat-normally oriented conservatives to stop being so dumb and stupid and ignorant about samesex marriage. So one would THINK she'd sort of kind of know better on a parallel social issue.

Evidently, this is too much to ask of people like her. :problem:

dumb bigot

Missouri restaurant calls cops after waitress gets tired of serving black man’s birthday party

A black Missouri man was humiliated during his birthday party after a waitress gave up on his group — and managers called police to escort them out.

Terrence Dickerson, a chef and recording artist, made reservations for 30 friends and relatives Saturday at Blue Sky Tower Grill in Richmond Heights, but he said the group was kicked out before the party was set to end, reported KTVI-TV.

I guess we can be thankful that the cops didn't start shooting people.

11-year-old student arrested by school resource officer after refusing to recite Pledge of Allegiance

An 11-year-old at Lawton Chiles Middle Academy in Lakeland, Florida was arrested and removed from class after a substitute teacher demanded the student recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

The teacher, who was filling in on February 4, asked her sixth-grade class to stand and recite the pledge, but the student refused, reportedly telling the substitute teacher that the flag was racist, and adding that the National Anthem was offensive to black people.

New York to ban hairstyle policies that discriminate against black people

New York City will ban discrimination based on hairstyles, a rule meant to stop policies that penalize black people.

The New York City Commission on Human Rights issued the new regulations on Monday. Believed to be the first in the US, they give African American New Yorkers the legal right to wear their hair in afros, cornrows, locks, twists, braids, Bantu knots and other styles.

Arizona marshal threatens to have pre-teen journalist ‘thrown in juvey’ for reporting the news

In the town of Patagonia, Arizona, Marshal Joseph Patterson is being scrutinized by the local government because of a video that shows him threatening a pre-teen journalist with arrest on Monday, February 18.

The journalist is 12-year-old Hilde Kate Lysiak, who publishes the website the Orange Street News. According to a February 18 article Lysiak wrote and posted on her site, she was riding her bike while covering a story when Patterson stopped her—and in a video, Patterson can be heard saying, “You can tape me, but what I’m going to tell you is if you put my face on the Internet, it’s against the law. I’m not giving you permission to use my picture or my face on the Internet.”

Video of a Minnesota corrections officer kneeing and punching a handcuffed man in 2016 has emerged — but the convicted deputy involved has just submitted his resignation.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that Ramsey County corrections officer Travis VanDeWiele submitted his resignation last week, concluding a three-year-long debacle that began in 2016.

Judge grants charged officer's push to seal court documents

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A judge has ruled that multiple court documents from legal discovery will be filed under seal in the case against a white Nashville police officer who fatally shot an armed black man from behind in July.

In Officer Andrew Delke's case, Davidson County Criminal Court Judge Monte Watkins on Tuesday cited state Supreme Court precedent, which says many pretrial discovery records would likely impair a defendant's fair trial rights if made public.

Officers will not be charged in fatal shooting of Stephon Clark, prosecutor says

Two officers involved in the fatal shooting of Stephon Clark in Sacramento, California, last year will not be charged, the district attorney announced Saturday.

The shooting of Clark, 22, in his grandmother’s backyard on March 18, 2018, sparked protests. The two officers said they believed Clark had a gun and was in a shooting stance before they fired, but only a cell phone was found.

Police union cancels plan to raffle off semi-automatic rifle

BERGENFIELD, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey police union has canceled a raffle that listed a semi-automatic rifle and a shotgun as prizes.

Bergenfield police say a state statute bars giving away weapons as prizes and the event has been cancelled. NorthJersey.com reports Det. Dave Tortora, president of Bergenfield PBA Local 309, said Thursday the firearms raffle was a way to help his 46-member organization raise money.

Cops weren't called, but cop takes it upon himself to arrest black man for picking up garbage on his own property.
Quote:
Police detained a black Colorado man who was picking up trash outside his own home.

A Boulder police officer questioned the man after spotting him Friday morning picking up trash with a clamper in a partially enclosed patio behind a “private property” sign, and he asked whether the man was authorized to be there, reported The Daily Camera.

The man, whose identity has not been released, told the officer he lived and worked in the building, and presented his school identification card, but the officer detained him for further investigation and called for additional assistance, saying the man was uncooperative.

A roommate began recording the encounter, and video posted online shows the man trying to explain that he lives in the building and did not have a weapon.

“You’re on my property with a gun in your hand, threatening to shoot me, because I’m picking up trash,” the man says. “I don’t have a weapon! This is a bucket, this is a clamp.”
