Lawsuit spotlights how Miami-Dade police treat black young men. It’s appalling | Opinion

In what world is the act of cousins sitting inside a BMW in front of a house chit-chatting — one of them a real estate agent, the other a contractor — the scene of a crime in progress that requires the entire Crime Prevention Team to pounce, guns blazing, sirens blaring?

In what world is it fair for a high school track and field coach — working on his doctorate in sports management and juggling two jobs — to end up yanked out of his car at gunpoint, forced to the ground, and jailed overnight for no valid reason?

Mother was ticketed and nearly towed while breastfeeding her 3-week-old baby

New York — A mother is fighting a parking ticket she got after she pulled over to breastfeed her baby in New York City, CBS New York reported. Guillermina Rodriguez, a mother of four, was driving through midtown Manhattan on Thursday with her hungry three-week-old baby crying in the backseat.

"There was an immense amount of traffic. It took me like 45 minutes to an hour to just get from 42nd to 30th Street," Rodriguez said.

I can sympathize with the mother but she wasn't ticketed for breastfeed, she was ticketed for illegally parking in a commercial zone.

Mall cop hassles black security guard and orders him to strip down

A black security guard for Louis Vuitton was hassled by mall cops, who demanded he strip down to his t-shirt so that he wouldn’t be mistaken for mall security, reports KDKA.

“I was approached by one of the mall securities and he asked me if I was security,” Sellers says. “I said yes, and he said, ‘I can’t let you walk through the mall with the uniform on. You’re going to have to take it off.’”

There's a similar bill for NY as well.

Michigan city moves to criminalize calling 911 on people of color who are just living their lives

Sweeping amendments to a 66-year-old human rights ordinance might make Grand Rapids, Mich. the latest city to try to tackle the epidemic of racially-motivated abuses of emergency services. The planned changes “would make it a criminal misdemeanor to racially profile people of color for ‘participating in their lives.’”

Diversity and Inclusion Manager Patti Caudill said the ordinance is a new concept in Michigan. It isn’t meant to discourage 911 calls, she said. Rather, it’s meant to make people “check their biases” before calling the police.

“Call the police, but if you’re calling because your neighbors are having a barbecue and you’re calling because of some implicit bias because they’re people of color, we don’t want to see that,” she said.

Shooting of unarmed African Americans near Yale puts spotlight on police training

A police officer involved in a shooting near the campus of Yale University has led to almost a week of protests. Unlike other high-profile shootings of unarmed African Americans, demonstrators at Yale say this case is not about race, but about how police are trained.

Protesters poured onto the streets of Hamden, Connecticut, on Sunday. This was the sixth straight day of passionate, but peaceful demonstrations since an officer was involved in a shooting Tuesday in New Haven.

NYPD cop arrested a random black businessman on false charges just so he could earn overtime: lawyer

An NYPD cop who accused a black investment adviser of pickpocketing an undercover cop has not faced disciplinary action, the New York Daily News reports.

In 2016, then-58-year-old Darrell Williams was at the 125th St. and Lexington Ave. subway station. Officer Xavier Gonzalez accused him of picking the pockets of an undercover cop, even though Williams, was dressed in a suit with a briefcase in one hand and his phone in the other. He was on his way to meet a client.

I can't find it on the L.A. Times' worthless web site, but the guy we elected sheriff is a complete disaster. He's putting the department back 30 years and bragging about it. The latest story dealt with his permission given a sheriff station known for racism in a Latino area to bring back its "Fort Apache" logo. Before that, he said he didn't know why guards in the jail division (noted worldwide for meanness) shouldn't work over inmates with mental problems, so he's giving permission to do just that. He's also reinstated deputies who were affiliated with internal department gangs. And of course we can't forget how he reinstated the one who broke into his girl friend's house.

Counting down to next L.A. riot........

Yes he did. Yes it does.

The sheriff operates the county jail, which is why you don't want to get arrested in L.A.. They put the younger deputies in there, and when those officers have finally given up on the human race and learned how to be mean, they're deemed ready for the street.

Deputies form gangs of their own within the ranks. They have secret tattoos and such. These were frowned upon until this guy took over, now I would imagine that they are fine, since he reinstated all the people who'd been suspended for that.

Very violent. Notoriously trigger happy. Classic racist model of policing.

One more reason not to live in L.A. County.

Alabama Deputy Placed On Leave For Allegedly Making Anti-LGBTQ Comments About Bullied Teen Who Took Own Life

An Alabama police deputy has been placed on administrative leave after being accused of making anti-LGBTQ comments on Facebook, officials have confirmed.

The officer, who works for the Madison County Sheriff's Office in Huntsville, sparked backlash online after his account posted about the death of 15-year-old Nigel Shelby. The teenager took his own life last Thursday (April 18), allegedly because he had been bullied about his sexuality.

There was another one that dealt specifically with the new sheriff doing things that a lot of watchdog groups were not happy about. I think that might have been some kind of editorial, but there was another news story on page one of the "California" section one that dealt specifically with community objection to the "Fort Apache" logo being reinstated.

I can't find either of these. They ran in the print edition, but they are apparently buried or suppressed on the web site. Nothing would surprise me.

The mother of three children wounded when an Oklahoma officer fired at a burglary suspect says two suffered head wounds and the third was shot in the face.

https://apnews.com/38b8d36f567b43da8a29fafea549bfa0.

Olivia Hill told KXII-TV that her 4-year-old daughter was shot in the head and her 1-year-old daughter was shot in the face. Hill said her 5-year-old child has a skull fracture. Her 2-year-old child was uninjured. The children’s names were not released.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Brooke Arbeitman said Hill and the children were in a truck with 21-year-old William Devaughn Smith when gunfire broke out as officers approached Smith in Hugo southeastern Oklahoma.

Inept racists tried forcibly tattooing the N-word on a man’s neck — but then they spelled it wrong: police

A group of three white people have been arrested after police say they tried to tattoo a racial slur on another white man’s neck — but failed when they wound up spelling it incorrectly.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports that police have arrested three suspects and are still seeking a fourth for allegedly assaulting a man in earlier this year.

Officer instigated then lied about actions that led to shooting death of Oscar Grant, report says

(CNN)An officer involved in the 2009 fatal shooting of Oscar Grant at the Fruitvale train station in Oakland, California, was responsible for instigating the events and escalating tensions in the encounter that preceded Grant's death, according to a newly released report.

The 10-year-old report -- recently released thanks to a new California police transparency law -- says that Bay Area Rapid Transit Officer Anthony Pirone "started a cascade of events that ultimately led to the shooting of Grant," and that he then lied about those events in an effort to put his own "actions and conduct in a more favorable light."

Woman Body Slammed During Traffic Stop Prompts Use Of Force Investigation

RIO VISTA (CBS13) — A body slam at the hands of Rio Vista police was captured on camera during a traffic stop the evening of May 5.

The woman’s family says it’s excessive use of force and abuse of power from a police department that’s been accused of the same misconduct recently. What started out as a family dinner ended with the arrest of multiple family members after a physical confrontation between police and a mother and daughter.
