If I were to have to choose, I'd choose Marx over Ayn Rand. Any day. Rand was just plain evil.

I'm a big fan of Civil Liberties so I'll pass on Marx. With Rand and Objectivism I get to reject the philosophy and still keep the Civil Liberties. I doubt it would work like that with Marx.

Ayn Rand was a friendly witness to HUAC and had basically nothing to say about the Jim Crow conditions of the times.

So much for civil liberties.

I'm a fan of civil liberties, too. That's why the authoritarian in the WH bothers me, and the ACLU.

https://www.aclu.org/issues/executive-b ... p-year-one

-- repeatedly withheld government records, showing lack of transparency
-- conducted unlawful detention and removal of immigrants (esp. but not only Muslims) and Dreamers
-- attacked voting rights
-- tried to ban transgender people from military service
-- chilled women's reproductive freedom/rights
-- encouraged anti-LGBT discrimination
-- conducted surveillance against so-called "black identity extremists"
-- stomped all over freedom of the press and free speech

-- they didn't even list here his plans to continue torture and put more people into Gitmo
-- or the nonsense that Jeff Sessions is doing to expand "the war on drugs"

I'd say this president suck ass for civil liberties. The people who focus on "carnage" and "law and order" and "tough on crime" in their inaugural speeches, usually do.

glen should know that it does not matter what Ms. Pelosi says or what Ms. Pelosi does. He is only using her because she is Democrat.

Ms. Pelosi know that right now the Dems are not in majority in either House, which glen continues to ignore and given the fact that under her leadership the Dems continue to loose seats there is not by any means a guarantee that Ms. Pelosi will be in leadership in January. Her claim to leadership in tenuous at best and dissention in the ranks is growing.

glen uses Ms. Pelosi only on this issue, the rest of time she in evil incarnate.

It also serves glen because as a Republican he would have a Russian Backed, Russian Supported Republican in the Oval Office than duly elected Democrat. glen would rather have a Russian Asset in the White House than a Democrat and he know it.

This is one reason I can't give up politics. The train wreck theater is just too good.

We have people who, 25 or so years ago, were terrified at the thought of Russia taking over the United States. They joined the John Birch Society, called Eisenhower a commie, painted huge GET US OUT OF UN signs on their garage doors, and were convinced that Russian agents ran every school board in the country.

These same people are now saying Putin is da boss, KGB training and former commie party membership and all. They can't wait for Russia to take over the United States. They think Russian agents are their kind of people.

You can't make up shit as weird as American politics.

And yet we still have our Civil Liberties. So kudos to Checks and Balances. Also Kudos to being able to vote the scum out of office in the next election. Not gonna have any of that with Marx.

They're still under attack ...

Donald Trump Thinks the Freedom of the Press Is ‘Disgusting’
https://www.aclu.org/blog/free-speech/f ... disgusting

Trump has:

Threatened to change libel laws to make it easier to sue publishers and news organizations following the release of an unflattering book.

Threatened legal action against a journalist and publisher over a book that includes critical statements about him.

[snip]

Threatened to cancel the broadcast licenses of media companies that offer negative coverage of him.

[snip]

While Trump tries to portray journalists at the “enemies” of Americans, it’s his attacks on the press that amount to an assault on the cornerstone of American democracy: the First Amendment.

[snip][end]

Sigh. Regarding civil rights tell that to gays and immigrants.

As for Marx no country ever instituted Marx’s ideas. The cults of personality and left authoritarian systems that arose were NOT Marxist despite their claims to the contrary. That being said Marx, just like Von Hayek and Friedman was a utopianist. The so-called dictatorship of the proletariat has a tendency to crush the proletariat just like capitalism unrestrained does.

Several of mine at the moment are under siege like we have not seen in two generations, thanks to conservatives like you.

It's our communities that keep civil liberties intact. Not yours.

Idle threats and stupid opinions are not an attack on civil liberties.

From a person lacking the power to impair civil liberties. All hail the constitution and checks and balances.

We may have the same faith in the courts and judiciary, unfortunately, he seems to be putting a lot of federal judges on the bench who may share his point of view.

BTW, I'd feel better if he wasn't acting like a dictator, rather than one that's being restrained, but maybe that's just me.

What checks and balances? The constitution he's ignoring? The Congress which is enabling him? The courts which are being packed with unqualified GOP operatives as fast as McConnell can ram them through the Senate?

You are a naive fool. All fascist regimes arose via the legal governmental process. Read “The Anatomy of Facism” by Robert Paxton and “Political Tribes” by Amy Chua.

Rights do not exist outside of body politic. The simplistic bleating of all hail the constitution and checks and balances means nothing. Utilizing the very system that you think will stop it can inevitably alter those very rights you claim impervious. We already have had freedom of speech limited, there have been limits placed on freedom of religion. Trump wants to broaden libel laws making it easier to sue. Worse, he attacks the very foundation of a free press by his claims of fake news and the idiot American people buy off on it. So much for the constitution. And just because he hasn’t issued some executive order against the press doesn’t mean that the press is not engaged in a rear guard action.

All hail bird’s theorem and Z’s Law as neither has been proven wrong.

Dontcha get it? It's not just "him" that is the problem.

"He" is a symptom. His cult constituency and so-called moderate enablers are the problem.

Live I've said to Sam, MLK had so-called moderates' number a half a decade years ago.

According to Robert Paxton’s book, fascist regimes took power with the help of conservatives in reaction to fear of the the left in early 20th century Europe. Interesting marriage of convenience.
