Candidate who defeated Mark Sanford seriously injured in car crash

South Carolina lawmaker Katie Arrington, who defeated U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., in the Republican primary for his seat last month, was seriously injured in a fatal car accident on Friday night.

Campaign adviser Michael Mule said that Arrington, 47, a state representative, was on her way to Hilton Head, South Carolina, for a Saturday morning event when another car, which was driving in the wrong lane, struck her vehicle head on.

According to her campaign, Arrington suffered a fracture to her back, broken ribs, and a partial collapse of the main artery in her legs. She will have to undergo "major surgery" to remove a portion of her small intestine and a portion of her colon, and will require a stent in the main artery in her legs.

The driver of the other car that struck her vehicle (she was the passenger) was driving on the wrong side of the road. He is deceased. Been no further details, but it seems he was at fault, and I suspect DUI. I'm sure more information will eventually be coming out.
