A Horizon Air employee described as “suicidal” commandeered an empty turboprop passenger plane at Seattle’s main airport Friday night and roared low over Puget Sound — with a pair of Air Force F-15s in pursuit — before crashing it into a small island, authorities said.

The FBI Seattle field office on Friday said early signs do not point toward terrorism. Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ed Troyer described the suspect as an unnamed suicidal 29-year-old man from the county “doing stunts in the air” before the crash.

The man, referred to as “Rich” and “Richard” by air traffic controllers in tense recordings, said he was “just a broken guy” as authorities tried to divert the 76-seat Bombardier Q400 away from populated areas.

The dude was a ground support type. A grunt. Handle baggage, hook and unhook cables, etc. Obviously he'd been doing some serious flight simulator on his computer. You don't just start up a DASH-8 (generic type, large turboprop airplane) and drive off the way you'd steal a car. He looped the thing, and somehow stayed out of Puget Sound.

Controllers did an incredible job. Their usual unflappability.

Somewhere on twitter there's a series of tweets from a guy in the plane that was cleared for takeoff when the DASH-8 went in front and hit the throttles. That put the airport on full ground stop, and the tweeter's plane had to abort and taxi off the runway. That'll ruin your day riding in the back, for sure. They deplaned on the tarmac and walked back to the terminal.

In general, not exactly the safest exit from this vale of tears.
