The Skimm 8/15/18 - Yesterday, a grand jury released a report that's been in the works for two years. It spoke to dozens of witnesses and went through half a million pages of docs. The jury found that more than 300 priests in Pennsylvania sexually abused children for decades. And that the number of victims is over 1,000 - but could be much higher. The state's AG called it the biggest US report on child sex abuse in the Catholic Church. Ever.

AP - Grand Jury Report, Over 1000 Cases of Priest Abuse.

And the report of the Grand Jury, it's over 1300 pages, but here it is for anybody interested. What I've looked at so far is disgutingly amazing. I thought the Diocese of LA was bad.

GREAT thread title.

People heading up this institution are the first to preach morality at Planet Earth, yet are the most amoral bigots around.

One can hope Pope Francis is at least a little different. Time will tell with that, I suppose, but tbh I am not holding my breath.

Ratzinger...jeez wwhat a fucking asshole. A former co-worker at SAF told me that the OFM (Order of Friars Minors....Franciscans) dreaded his Papalship. Bro. Bob was one of real Brothers, a Man who lived his faith they are few and far between.

If Ratzinger had his way, the Inquisition would have been brought back. As I told Bob once, I look forward to the day when the Roman Church is brought kicking and screaming into the 18th. Century.

Perhaps the title of the grand jury report should have been "The Sins of the Fathers."

Boston was worse than LA. The problem seems endemic.

Ratz was Opus Dei and looked like goober bush. I didn't like him.

Ratzinger and his days in Hitlerjugend, it shaped his whole thought process. The Man was freaking Cold-Hearted.

Many act like JP2 was the greatest thing since sliced bread because he was anti-communist and charismatic. Ratzinger was a Hitler youth but claimed he had no choice. I ain’t buying that.

For me the bottom line is that these are crimes and as such the priests and those who covered up their actions should be turned over to the state for investigation and possible trial. I doubt priests are citizens of the Vatican so the laws where they live apply. Francis could go a long way to restoring the Roman Church’s reputation by turning these people over.

Francis is at least trying. He faces stiff opposition from the hard line Conservatives in the church. It like most powerful people, they love the power and do not want to lose it.

Ratzinger knew how to use power, look how he became Pope.

I'd forgotten that part. He was indeed head of what the Inquisition is called now. Great. A priestly order that allows self-flagellation, and an office that used to use the rack and burning at the stake.

I find it interesting that there are so many comments about Ratzinger, and nothing about Wojtyla.

We have two ex-catholic priest friends, and one ex-nun friend. All three have openly expressed their disgust for Ratzinger, but all three agree that the real despicable criminal in the modern abuse history of the catholic church is Wojtyla. All three have vigorously stated that Wojtyla knew all about it. Knew about it before he became Pope. He was made aware of all the disgusting details of it while Pope. And he looked the other way for 27 years.

Ratzinger deserves every low kick he gets. But he's the easy target. Everybody loves John Paul II. Do they know? Probably. Do they care? Probably not. My ex-priest friend Bill insists that every literate Catholic on earth knows. And that they are not pissed off at Wojtyla. In his opinion, the vast majority of Catholics are pissed at the victims for not remaining silent.

JP2, imo, knew. He simply either passed on doing anything by abdicating authority or he actively engaged in assisting the cover up. This isn’t something that just sprung up. It has gone on for decades if not actually centuries.

Sexual Scandal of Marcial Maciel.

Quote:
1956 investigation
Father Marcial Maciel, a Mexican priest who was the general director of the Legion of Christ, which he founded in 1941, was investigated several times for his behavior. In 1956 the Vatican had him removed as superior and investigated allegations of drug (morphine) abuse. After interviewing members of the then-small congregation, the Vatican cleared him. Maciel was reinstated in February 1959.[4] There are no records of any members reporting sexual abuse at that time. However, since then two seminarians reported that they had lied to investigators in 1956; they did not report having been abused because Father Maciel had them earlier take a vow never to speak ill of him.[5]

Accusations since the 1970s
Since the 1970s, Marcial Maciel was twice accused of having repeatedly sexually abused other congregation members, including young children. Maciel's accusers include a priest, a guidance counselor, a professor, an engineer, a lawyer, and a former priest who became a university professor.[6] These seven Mexicans and two Spaniards described themselves as former members of a favored group, known as the "apostolic schoolboys." They said that the abuse allegedly occurred over three decades beginning in the 1940s in Spain and Italy, where they were taken as promising boys and young men from Mexico to be educated.[7] The abuse, they said, involved some 30 boys and young men and extended over at least three decades.

Nine different accusers
In 1998, the nine men above filed formal charges against Fr. Maciel at the Vatican.[2] (One man subsequently retracted his story, claiming it had been a fabrication intended to damage the Legion; the other eight continue to maintain these allegations.) The accusers described how Maciel would feign having an illness in his groin and falsely claim to have been given papal permission to receive help massaging away the pain. Fr. Maciel and the Legion originally denied the accusations. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), led by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (who later became Pope Benedict XVI), examined the allegations. The CDF told the plaintiffs the following year that Maciel would not be prosecuted because of his age.[2]

We could have set our watches by this one. Cardinal Burke doubles down. :problem:

Sorry for the link to whackodoodle CNS News, but it's broken on purpose so they don't get any hits from here. I'm not going to quote this trash, either.

Cardinal Burke: 'We Have a Very Grave Problem of a Homosexual Culture in the Church'
https://www.cnsnews. com/blog/michael-w-chapman/cdl-burke-we-have-very-grave-problem-homosexual-culture-church

Uh-huh. It's the homos' fault priests go around raping little girls in hospitals and forcing kids to go to confession with the priest who brutalized them.

Cripes, I despise conservative traditional prolife family values. These people are murderers of the soul.

Another vile piece. Via Patheos (Catholic League On Predatory Priests: It’s Not Rape If The Child Isn’t Penetrated)

PENNSYLVANIA GRAND JURY REPORT DEBUNKED
https://www.catholicleague .org/pennsylvania-grand-jury-report-debunked/

Quote:
This is an obscene lie. Most of the alleged victims were not raped: they were groped or otherwise abused, but not penetrated, which is what the word "rape" means. This is not a defense—it is meant to set the record straight and debunk the worst case scenarios attributed to the offenders. Furthermore, Church officials were not following a "playbook" for using terms such as "inappropriate contact"—they were following the lexicon established by the John Jay professors.

Examples of non-rape sexual abuse found in the John Jay report include "touching under the victim's clothes" (the most common act alleged); "sexual talk"; "shown pornography"; "touch over cleric's clothes"; "cleric disrobed"; "victim disrobed"; "photos of victims"; "sexual games"; and "hugging and kissing." These are the kinds of acts recorded in the grand
jury report as well, and as bad as they are, they do not constitute "rape."

The bottom line is that the Catholic Church should simply be shut down. Period.

I think if you tell people they can never have sex, that is unnatural, against our genetic programming, and those urges are going to come out somewhere. Plus, the Priesthood is all about power.

Religion poisons everything.

Below is a classic debate, about whether the Catholic Church is a power for good. Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry give the greatest case against the church, and they completely destroy the Church's defenders.

www.youtube.com Video from : www.youtube.com

The motion was "Is the Catholic Church a force for good in the world?"

They took a vote before and after the debate. Before the debate, the vote was:

For: 679
Against: 1102
Undecided: 346

After the debate:

For: 268
Against: 1876
Undecided: 34

The entire debate is very much worth watching. Hitchens' opening is a master class on church history, as well as his attack on the church for it's opposition to homosexuality. Also, the fact that the opposition never even TRIED to rebut anything either Hitchens or Fry said.

One of the great film documentaries ever made is Amy Berg's "Deliver Us From Evil." The documentary report on abuses in the LA diocese, particularly the history of rape by priest Oliver O'Grady, and the criminal protection of him by Cardinal (then Bishop of Stockton) Roger Mahoney. Amazingly, Mahoney was the official representative of the LA Diocese to Barack Obama's 2008 inauguration.

Anyway, in Berg's film, almost the most disturbing aspect of the report was the venimous hate directed at the victims and families of victims who reported acts of abuse by O'Grady and other catholic priests. No surprise that American catholics don't give a shit about the cesspool of abuse that is the history of the catholic church.

The Klan, maybe? They hate catholics almost as much as they hate jews. Reckon how many of those white klansmen in Charlottesville, were closeted catholics, eh?

One more time.

Pedophiles ARE NOT GAY/LESBIAN. They are adults who achieve sexual satisfaction by engaging in acts of sexual perversion with children. Are then LGBTQ Priests and Nuns, of course there are. But do not blame them for sick fucks raping childing. The fault lies with the Roman Church who rather deal these sick pieces of shit, instead would move them to a new parish/school where they abuse would continue.

It's weird that #QAnon didn't have any intel on the actual pedophile ring in the Catholic Church.

Really weird.

By the church itself. It should go the way of ACORN.

It may happen anyway. The average age of Priests are now 70. Just read in a WAPO story that in Ireland, historically the strongest Catholic nation, last year only 7 young men entered the Seminary to become Priests. Most young people have already left the Church, making most of the parishioners as old as the Priests.

This latest new may be the final stake through the heart. Whatever church survives may be vastly smaller. The Church refuses to change with the times AND the crimes.

Hm, well the reason I ask is because there are 1.2 billion Catholics in the world. That's at least 1/6 of the world's population.

So the RCC shuts itself down tomorrow over the fact that they've got a bunch of perves in leadership and a church hierarchy that shields them and moves them around to additional places where they can prey on children. Then what happens to 1.2 billion adherents? (I can cut to the chase and tell you -- not much different. They'll just continue to practice Catholicism like Chinese Protestant/Evangelical home churches do under the PRC, or like slave and maroon societies and Native Americans did, like after the Ghost Dance or Fancy Shawl dance was officially outlawed.)

I really hope that this could be a final stake through the heart but at the same time I believe that to be wishful thinking. I wish it were different, but we're never going to get rid of organized religion. Ask the current Russian federation how well that worked.

Yeah, as long as people are afraid of death, we will have religion. And people will use religion for real power over people's lives here on earth. To enslave them, to abuse them and to control them.
