PACHULA, Mexico — No one here has seen any “unknown Middle Easterners” among the Central Americans heading north through Mexico.

“Hardened criminals” have been tough to identify, as have “very tough criminal elements.”

Those are the ways President Trump has described members of the migrant caravan. When a reporter asked him how he was so sure, he responded: “Don’t be a baby.”

So who are the more than 5,000 people who left Central America in recent weeks, joining a group that hopes eventually to cross into the United States?

Their stories are often reduced to the reasons they fled their hometowns: people running from violence or poverty or trying to reunite with American wives and children. But watching the enormous procession march through the streets of southern Mexico, the most striking thing about the group’s demographic is how varied it is.

Bet you the board cons are afraid anyway.

Last year I looked into it. It began as a Station Of the Cross religious observance. Not being from the culture it was kind of hard to understand. I guess as it moves around, people join and other people drop out but a major point of it is it travels.

Then some people started sponsoring others to join in and they politicized it. It's a political football now. About the only thing I can determine with any degree of reliability is that it's not likely to actually be anything like the way it's being described.

Everything it says now is full fascism.

The ONLY reason his nazi base isnt committing mass violence on patriots is they still just arent sure who the police and natl guard will side with.

tick tick tick

I am not of the position that just because certain things have become political footballs, that actual facts about them are unknowable.

Yes, one does have to start by cutting through the bullshit.

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/fiv ... ed-n922806

Bartolo Fuentes, a former Honduran lawmaker and social activist, originally got the word out to Hondurans, calling them to meet at the San Pedro Sula bus station to leave the country. Guatemalan police arrested Fuentes last week in the middle of a crowd, shortly after Trump threatened to cut off funding to Guatemala and Honduras if they did not stop the caravan. The caravan now continues without Fuentes, with a handful of different leaders making logistical decisions about when to depart each city.

Immigration experts attribute the size of the caravan and the timing of its travel to cooler weather, as well as gang violence and political turmoil in Honduras after the country's contested presidential election last year.

"The reason that the caravans have been organized are to help protect Central American refugees and migrants as they make the perilous journey through Mexico and to highlight their petitions for asylum," said Elizabeth Oglesby, a professor at the University of Arizona's Center for Latin American Studies.

[snip][end]

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/who ... re-n862566

Abeja is one of the lead organizers of Pueblo Sin Fronteras, which for over 15 years has led migrants to the U.S. via caravans to help them to seek asylum in other countries.

[snip]

The caravans are referred to in Spanish as Via Crucis Migrantes, or Migrants' Way of the Cross. They are fashioned after the Stations of the Cross processions celebrated by Latin American and Latino Catholics to mark and "re-enact" the final days of Jesus from prosecution to his burial in a tomb.

In such processions, someone plays Christ carrying a wooden cross and people from the congregation or community follow him. Similarly, the volunteers from Pueblos Sin Fronteras and other groups accompany migrants in a caravan that travels in buses, on trains and on foot.

[snip]

Abeja, who has been helping out with the caravans since 2013, said about 1,175 people were taking part in the caravan this year, with some fleeing gang violence in El Salvador and many more from Honduras than in previous years.

“About 80 percent of them are from Honduras," he said. "We have around 300 minors ranging from 1-month-old to 11-years-old. As of the rest of the people, we have about 20 youths who identify as LGBT and about 400 women."

Abejas said the Hondurans in the caravan are fleeing the continuing political crisis and violence there that escalated in November with the election of President Juan Orlando Hernández. His election was seen as rigged and was followed by violent protests that were shut down with a military-enforced curfew.

At least 30 people were killed during Honduras’ election aftermath.

[snip]

"People are not leaving for economic reasons or to take advantage of a system in the U.S.," Burgi-Palomino said. "They have real valid claims of fear of returning to the country. They don't have access to justice. The refugee crisis from the Northern Triangle has not ended."

When they get to Mexico, the Honduran migrants visit different embassies and consulates, including those belonging to the U.S., to try to be officially recognized as asylum seekers.

[snip][end]

The Washington Consensus has basically fucked Central America for decades. Are we surprised that people want to leave or that people want to stay but also want the U.S. government to keep the hell away from their country?

Can someone explain how a caravan advancing at a snail's pace toward the USA, where all branches of government are controlled by the GOP, helps the GOP and blames the Dems?

Neither U.S. political party is responsible for it. Events in Honduras are responsible for it.

Political parties might be making a football out of it, but neither U.S. party had anything to do with it happening. (Nor George Soros, nor ISIS, nor ... )

That said, that doesn't mean U.S. policies didn't create outcomes that helped lead to it, see bird's observation.

Why should anybody in the U.S. see it as a looming threat? Well, it still beats the fuck out of me. We used to welcome refugees. How'd that crap on the Statue of Liberty go?

But Stephen Miller says those days are over.

Exactly.

Caravans happen all the time. People fleeing for better places. All of a sudden this one is an invasion and it's the Dem's fault under a GOP government that's controlled all branches for the last 2 years. Just hard to believe people buy this blatant midterm GOP fuckery BS.

Rump could say martians are coming across the border with 3 legged 4 eyed pets who spew acid and on and on and the idiots would believe it. Including joe, glen and ted.

Until they loudly denounce rump on here, they are guilty

Trump Weighs Executive Order to Shut Southern Border to Migrants: Report
https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-wei ... nts-report

President Trump is weighing an executive order to close the southern border to migrants, including asylum seekers, as part of a push to rally supporters ahead of the midterm elections, The New York Times reports. Sources familiar with the plan quoted by the Times said the details are still being worked out, but if Trump goes ahead with it, he will invoke the same part of immigration law used in last year’s chaotic travel ban to bar foreigners from entering the U.S. on national security grounds. Three sources cited in the report said Trump may issue a proclamation on the executive action on Tuesday, a week before the midterm elections. Reports of the plan came shortly after Trump declared on Twitter that he was “bringing out the military” to deal with a migrant caravan heading for the U.S. border, which he described as a “national emergency.” Amid reports that Trump is sending up to 1,000 U.S. Army troops to the U.S-Mexico border to stop any influx of migrants, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen late Thursday offered vague reassurances on the plan in comments to Fox News. “We do not have any intention right now to shoot at people, but they will be apprehended, however,” Nielsen said, adding that officers “do have the ability of force to defend themselves” if they need to.

[snip][end]

Putting the military on the border will violate Posse Comitatus. We are sending troops to "protect and defend" us from a bunch of refugees. Also, shutting down the border will prevent ALL migrants and refugees from entering, whether part of this "caravan" or not.

Well, at least apparently they won't be shooting first.

Now that the midterms are over, I'm expecting this shameless racist election propaganda to drop from the news. We shall see.

I don’t expect it to drop. Dear Ubergroppenfuhrer still has Mueller hanging over his head like Damocles’ sword. Anything to keep the base stirred up.

True. And he already started back on Mueller again this morning on Twitter. He's knows something is coming.

Did you all hear about ICE conducting Training on election day in Beto's neighborhood...wow, that alone would start a civil war if we did it

So now that the election is over, the media seems to have stopped talking about a caravan of invaders coming to kill everyone. Go figure.

I don't know why. Solve the problem, click into the bottom of a thread from the active topics index. In the right column, it's the icon labeled last post.

That will let me bypass the individual graphics? and let me see the text?
