I do however think Glen is downplaying his reaction to defend "youthful indiscretion" to it's hilt. Some left, not much, I'm encouraged by that.

He's a dishonest white conservative, like the rest.

We have a couple of things going on here. The first is that Republicans will do anything legal, illegal or treasonous to get into power. The second is as Ike noted a culture war. Today's conservatism being a mental illness seeks to impose/maintain a patriarchal, white skinned power structure in the face of changing demographics. And as demographics change and baby boomers die off followed by Gen-Xers would we be surprised to note that there are conservative blacks, hispanics and other groups that are not self-hating? The question becomes how will this shift play itself out?

It's already playing out in ways we talk about here but that conservative whites never will.

For example: our own government kidnapping migrant/immigrant children: US sees limitations on reuniting migrant families - MSN

Quote:
The Trump administration says it would require extraordinary effort to reunite what may be thousands of migrant children who have been separated from their parents and, even if it could, the children would likely be emotionally harmed.

Jonathan White, who leads the Health and Human Services Department's efforts to reunite migrant children with their parents, said removing children from "sponsor" homes to rejoin their parents "would present grave child welfare concerns." He said the government should focus on reuniting children currently in its custody, not those who have already been released to sponsors.

"It would destabilize the permanency of their existing home environment, and could be traumatic to the children," White said in a court filing late Friday, citing his years of experience working with unaccompanied migrant children and background as a social worker. The administration outlined its position in a court-ordered response to a government watchdog report last month that found many more migrant children may have been split from their families than previously reported. The government didn't adequately track separated children before a federal judge in San Diego ruled in June that children in its custody be reunited with their parents.

It is unknown how many families were split under a longstanding policy that allows separation under certain circumstances, such as serious criminal charges against a parent, concerns over the health and welfare of a child or medical concerns.

Ann Maxwell, Health and Human Services' assistant inspector general for evaluations, said last month that the number of separated children was certainly larger than the 2,737 listed by the government in court documents. The department's inspector general report didn't have a precise count, but Maxwell said staff estimated it to be in the thousands.

Their hair is on fire, though, because a white male got caught in a KKK blackface scene 35 years ago and is being criticized for it along with calls for his job. This is what is of emotional importance to them.

Quote:
Oh, and btw? I have two words: Robert Byrd. Should he have been forced to resign? The difference I note is that I believe Byrd was sincere in his apology. This guy and Henry Hyde before him and Kavanaugh and hamsters and Joran all played word games and the poor, poor pitiful me game. Perhaps that is the difference.

Yes, they cannot be trusted.

They are now going after Fairfax as well. (By "they," I mean the site Big League Politics.) I could put this in "Big Perv" but obviously this appears connected. (I'm not defending Northam by noting this, but I think the accusations against Fairfax look sketchier.)

Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax threatens legal action against conservative website over 'defamatory and false' sexual assault allegation
https://www.richmond.com/news/virginia/ ... 594d8.html

Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax has threatened legal action against a conservative website that aired what Fairfax’s office called a “defamatory and false” sexual assault allegation against him.

Big League Politics, the website that first posted the racist photo from Gov. Ralph Northam’s medical school yearbook page, aired elements of the allegation Sunday night.

In a statement early Monday morning, Fairfax’s office said The Washington Post had already investigated the allegation and chose not to publish a story due to “significant red flags and inconsistencies.”

“Lt. Governor Fairfax has an outstanding and well-earned reputation for treating people with dignity and respect,” read the statement from his office, “He has never assaulted anyone – ever – in any way, shape or form.”

Fairfax would become the governor if Northam is forced to resign over the yearbook photo.

[snip][end]

Big League Politics, a conservative blog/website, was the first place to come forward with the Northam photos.

WaPo and other news organizations looked into these allegations, and found the stories too sketchy to run.

Here is what I don't understand. Virginia gov did something stupid inappropriate and racist 35 years ago and because of that he has to go.

Illinois gov says something stupid inappropriate and racist recently and he gets a pass.

Your asshole incumbent Illinois governor was crushed like a grape. And the vote demographics indicate that black Illinoisans think your suggestion that JB is a racist is as monumentally stupid as all your other notions.

Speaking of Jacob Wohl.

Prediction: they're trying to get both the Gov. and Lt. Gov. out. Check who's third in line.

Right-Wing Activists Offer Bounty For Information Leading to Justin Fairfax’s Resignation
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/righ ... signation/

Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, two right-wing activists with a knack for sleazy shenanigans, have put up a $15,000 bounty on information that leads to the resignation of Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax.

In a Periscope video uploaded this afternoon, Wohl announced that he and Burkman would pay $15,000 cash to anyone who could produce information leading to Fairfax’s resignation. Fairfax has been the subject of sexual assault allegations in recent days after Big League Politics published allegations that the Washington Post chose not to publish last year after the paper was unable to “find anyone who could corroborate” either Fairfax or his accuser’s account of what had happened. On Monday, Fairfax issued a statement denying the allegations.

“Jack Burkman and I are offering a $15,000 cash reward—that’s right, a $15,000 cash reward—for information leading to the resignation of Justin Fairfax,” Wohl said in the video.

He added that the reward would be given to the person who provides “nail-in-the-coffin” information and directed those who believe they may have such information to shoot him a line at a Proton Mail email address.

“If you were a witness, if you saw him leading her to the hotel room, if you heard the struggle in the room next door—I’m talking about credible information that you might have that can prove that Fairfax indeed did commit this sexual assault and that this information can lead to his resignation and/or his prosecution later on,” Wohl said.

Last year, Wohl and Burkman attempted to push an unsubstantiated claim that Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor appointed to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election, had sexually assaulted a woman in 2010. By the end of the press conference, their story had so completely fallen apart that they dodged reporters as they exited the building. The source of their claims was a fake research firm called Surefire Intelligence, for which Wohl appeared to have created online profiles for ahead of the attempted smear. Surefire Intelligence, Wohl said, will be partly responsible for the promised payout.

[snip][end]

Surefire Intelligence. That's got to be up there with "Project Veritas" for bullshit name of the year.

couple of good articles on this

The furor over Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s yearbook photo has America once again asking the wrong questions about racism

Quote:
........What this Northam controversy should point us to is the episodic lens through which we view racism in this country — a series of flash-points sparked by a horrifying image, a spoken slur or a bad tweet. These events trigger imprecise conversations, like whether Tom Brokaw truly has racism in his heart after saying, “Hispanics should work harder at assimilation.” Only if we’re lucky does a conversation about blackface in a medical school yearbook expand to touch upon disproportionate rates of black maternal and infant mortality, and why doctors trained in dangerous racial stereotypes may very well employ others when they have African-Americans in their care.........

Blackface Is the Tip of the Iceberg

Quote:
.......If racism is principally a problem of power and resources — of race hierarchy and the denial of life, liberty and opportunity to blacks and other nonwhites — then our political culture ought to expand the offenses that earn the kinds of swift condemnation we’ve seen over the last few days. Voter suppression and the lawmakers who back it deserve the same contempt we save for open racial bigotry; officials behind policies rooted in prejudice, like the travel ban or child separation, ought to be forced from office.........

Two more people who have evidently been reading my posts. First sentence, viewtopic.php?p=440403#p440403

Quote:
Barber feels that what we keep missing is that racist laws and policies come before the ignorance on display in that photo. “Or even economics that say the means justify the ends,” he adds. “Or heretical ontology that says God intended for people to be separated. You know, the laws, the desire to legally engage in racism against people came first. And then all the ignorance, the blackface, the Sambos, came as a result of the laws.”

...

That sentence echoes the foreboding threat that Dr. King warned us about in his letter from that Birmingham jail cell. The civil rights icon cautioned us against the white moderate “who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice” and “who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace.” Northam’s desire for fairness, as he sees it, may doom a historic black community to being poisoned for fossil fuel riches that largely won’t benefit them. Oh, what a sight it would be to see wall-to-wall coverage of the damage wrought by white moderates who told black people that they were on our side!

Can't be trusted.

Quote:

Quote:
But this high bar for sanction — essentially a “pics or it didn’t happen” standard for racism — is also a problem. It treats expressions of racist contempt or mockery as the most egregious forms of racism, when that distinction should belong to the promotion of racist policies and ideas. King should have been punished as far back as 2006 when, at a rally in Las Vegas, he smeared undocumented immigrants as killers responsible for a “slow-motion holocaust” of American lives. Likewise, there should have been broad, bipartisan outrage over revelations that a voter identification law passed by North Carolina Republicans in 2013 targeted the state’s black voters with “surgical precision” in order to suppress the vote. Jeff Sessions’s tenure as attorney general — during which, among other abdications of his duty to protect Americans’ civil rights, he directed the Department of Justice to curb its investigations of abusive and racially discriminatory police departments — should have been a national scandal.

Oh and please quit calling this "white privilege." White privilege, so-called, is just racism.

Call it what it is.

I thought the Times article is pretty good.

Blackface is the face of Jim Crow.

Yes it's the face of Jim Crow, smallpox blankets, Trails of Tears, slavery, de facto segregation, internment, relocation, immigration bans, eugenics boards, vigilante mass murder, KKK courts, state houses, governors, Senators, Congressmen, SCOTUS judges, state judges, municipal judges, local judges, state troopers, cops, sherriffs, presidents; other words, conservative whites.

So, shall we crack the sociology textbook, again?

Both those articles make a point I've made myself, sometimes. People tend to focus on what we might call interpersonal racism, between individuals, or by individuals, because it is visible, obvious, can often be seen in photographic or video evidence.

But the outrage train on this or that individual doesn't touch institutional racism - which is often codified in law, but even when it isn't, is embedded in institutions, like the health care system, or the criminal justice system, or of course our political system. There's no law that says Black people will get worse health care outcomes than white people - thank the stars - but now the sad news is this is nonetheless true, and an outcome of racism lodged in our institutions.

Of course that's the problem. There is no Yearbook photo of the entire health care system dressed in blackface. There is no Youtube video of the criminal justice system wearing a Klan robe. There is no photo of the entire Virginia state government mistreating a person of color. Humans are very good at summoning their outrage against a visibly directed target. (And I'm not saying Northam doesn't have to go. But things are getting curious. Fairfax's accuser has now come forward, and she's an academic.) If only we could keep them focused on fixing their institutions. Some of it can be done through the law, some of it does require changing attitudes (insofar as they lead to behaviors), some of it requires institutional reform within institutions.

The name "Jim Crow" itself comes from an infamous minstrel show character.

That's him on stage at a minstrel show in 1832 ... white guy in blackface.

So much discussion, three pages of fucking discussion...I go back to my first comment in this thread. When Kavanaugh resigns for being a rapist, I will join the chorus of demands for Northam's resignation for being a racist.

Why the fuck is there not a goddamn single democratic politician opening his or her fucking festering piehole and saying..."I am sick and tired of us being the lonley occupants of the moral high ground. We forced Al Franken out of his office for a staged photo of him with a woman who made her living exposing her big American breasts for over 15 years. Now we want Northam to resign for maybe, or maybe not wearing blackface in his lawschool yearbook. Well...tell ya what When Kavanaugh resigns for being a sniveling rapist...when Trump resigns for being a pedophile...when Clarence Thomas resigns for being a self-pitying, pathologically lying, pornography addict and sexuall harrasment perp...I will call for Northam's resignation."

I don't think so.

In my mind dressing up for a "blackface show" would be about the same as dressing up in an SS uniform with a swastika arm band.

We get reports, which are like cans of prepackaged information, they create illusions of what happened, not necessarily what happened. There seems to be right wing influence on what was packaged and time sensitively released, there seems to be a systematic set up and smear campaign going on.

At this point I'm supporting both Northam and Fairfax, awaiting a clear investigation, both you guys hang in there.

The only thing I will add is the name of Fairfax's accuser is now known.

Her name is Vanessa Tyson, she's an associate professor of political science at Scripps College.

Both parties agree that they met at the Democratic Natl Convention in Boston, 2004. Both parties agree sexual acts occurred.

It's he said, she said. He says it was consensual, she said it was coerced.

Dunno, the only additional fact I can add is Washington Post looked into her story and could not find enough confirmation to run it.

I can't, and won't, say anything else, because there are times where I admit I, and we, don't know everything, yet.

I wouldn't, yet, at this point, also, call on Fairfax to resign.

I would like an answer, still, to how, if Northam is telling the truth that that picture is not him, how it wound up on his Yearbook page. The Yearbook editor from his year has been interviewed and he said every photo on every person's Yearbook page was submitted by the people themselves. That doesn't with certitude rule out either a mistake or malice, but it's why I say I would still like answers there. I will only add it remains puzzling why Northam "thought" a day later it wasn't him. If it wasn't him, and maybe it really is true he never saw his own Yearbook page until 2019, but why didn't he right away say "you know, that photo is not me." Right off the bat?

I get he admits he did Michael Jackson blackface. But if he never did anything other than that, he would have to know that photo wasn't really of him.

I know darned good and well that I can't sit in my house receiving the quality of reporting I'm seeing and make an informed conclusion with anything close to a standard of beyond a doubt.

Beyond a doubt is the standard I apply before I start personally hounding someone else.

Yeah but that's not why. He can't keep his story straight.

Unlike Al, who resigned and said "investigate me."

Meanwhile, from the state that graced Planet Earth with the Racial Integrity Act of 1924: Virginia attorney general admits he wore blackface - Hill

:problem:

Quote:
Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring (D) on Wednesday said he had worn blackface to a party while he was an undergraduate in college, deepening a political crisis that has now ensnared the three top officials in the Commonwealth’s government.

In a statement released Wednesday, minutes after Herring held an emergency meeting with the state legislative black caucus, the attorney general took responsibility for appearing in blackface.

“In 1980, when I was a 19-year old undergraduate in college, some friends suggested we attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time, like Kurtis Blow, and perform a song,” Herring said in a statement.

“It sounds ridiculous even now writing it. But because of our ignorance and glib attitudes — and because we did not have an appreciation for the experiences and perspectives of others — we dressed up and put on wigs and brown makeup,” he said.

“This was a onetime occurrence and I accept full responsibility for my conduct.”

What I wanna know is, what racist, anti-Black, anti-minority laws and public policies these people have made, upheld, made excuses for, and benefitted from.

BTW, I've talked quite a bit about the Racial Integrity Act of 1924, a white-conservative segregation, forced-sterilization, and eugenics racket, paid for with Black, Native, and poor white tax dollars.

search.php?keywords=racial+integrity+act+1924

Racial Integrity Laws (1924–1930) - Encyclopedia Virginia

Quote:
Such definitions were a function of white supremacy, or a way of organizing society in which whites used the law, social customs, and sometimes violence to maintain power over other racial groups. In time, some whites came to believe that their power was threatened by immigration and, especially, racial mixing. Although nonmarital relationships were commonplace, interracial marriages that legally recognized any such relationship had been prohibited in Virginia since 1691, and declared "absolutely void" since 1849; still, whites, blacks, and Indians in Virginia sometimes married. According to federal census reports, between 1890 and 1910 the number of mixed-race Virginians (or "mulattoes," as they were referred to in the census) increased from 122,441 to 222,910. However, that number dropped drastically in 1920, to 164,171. Some white people wondered whether this change, along with a longer, more gradual decline in the number of black Virginians, was the result of African Americans "passing" as white.

Helping to fuel these concerns was the eugenics movement, which was based on the idea that humans can be selectively bred in similar ways to plants and animals. Using large statistical studies, eugenicists purported to scientifically demonstrate that mental illness and criminal tendencies were inherited and should be specifically limited in the human population. They also argued that African Americans, Indians, poor people, criminals, prostitutes, and alcoholics all suffered from inferior genes. For this reason, many eugenicists maintained, it was critically important that whites not mix with supposedly inferior races. (Eugenics was later widely discredited as pseudoscience.)

In part in order to accomplish this separation of races, the state found it necessary to keep track of who was white, black, and Indian. From 1853 until 1896, Virginia required that all births and marriages be recorded, and that the race of all parties be noted. The practice was resumed in 1912 after the General Assembly established the Bureau of Vital Statistics, under the State Board of Health. Local registrars were required to report all births, deaths, and, beginning in 1918, marriages to the state registrar, along with people's racial identification. The new state registrar, Walter A. Plecker, was a white supremacist and a believer in eugenics who recognized that his new position could be used to prevent the mixing of races.

In 1922, Plecker, Ernest S. Cox, and the noted pianist and composer John Powell founded in Richmond the Anglo-Saxon Clubs of America. According to Powell, the group was dedicated to finding the "fundamental and final solutions of our racial problems in general, most especially of the Negro problem." Race-mixing was a priority concern for these men. Articles by Cox and Powell published in the Richmond Times-Dispatch on July 22, 1923, wondered, "Is White America to Become a Negroid Nation?"

On August 4, Plecker released a statement arguing that his position at the Bureau of Vital Statistics "is perhaps the greatest force in the state today combating this condition," because it was his power, specifically, to apply the state's racial definitions and so decide who could marry one another. Indeed, Plecker admitted to applying a standard beyond the law when identifying people as African American. Whereas the General Assembly had defined "colored" in 1910 as someone with one-sixteenth or more "negro blood," Plecker defined it as someone "with even a trace of negro blood on either side." This included nearly all Virginia Indians, according to Plecker, because they had so thoroughly interbred with African Americans.

In 1923, the Anglo-Saxon Clubs suggested that a new racial integrity bill be enacted, and the group's motivation, in part, was for the law to catch up with how government officials such as Plecker were already behaving with regard to race.

Plenty more about these filthy conservative white state-forced policies, in the link. Virginia did not end these policies until 1975. Homeboy who is the AG blacked up in 1980. Once, he volunteers to the public that pays his salary.

K.

I can't wait for glen to come in here hollering about "100 years ago" :problem:

Did I read correctly that now the Republican spin machine is now going after the third in line hoping that both gov and lt gov go? Do I smell a plot?

------

Has anyone in the history field done anything definitive on why all this white racial paranoia followed WWI? Was it all due to Birth of a Nation hitting a public not conditioned to question everything they saw in the movies? Was it the war? Was it the Bolshevik revolution? Was it the perceived overthrow of the European hereditary aristocracy?

If you look up "massive resistance" and my name, you'll find a few more things about Virginia. search.php?keywords="massive+resistance"&terms=all&author=carmenjonze

To be perfectly frank, and this will surprise no one around here at this point, I could really give a rip if they are personally "racist" or not. These two guys were beneficiaries of Virginia's anti-integration/desegregation scam enacted right after Brown v. Board of Education (1954); more segregationism paid for with Black tax dollars. They're not alone.

Massive Resistance - Virginia Museum of History and Culture

In 1954, the political organization of U.S. senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr., controlled Virginia politics. Senator Byrd promoted the "Southern Manifesto" opposing integrated schools, which was signed in 1956 by more than one hundred southern congressmen. On February 25, 1956, he called for what became known as Massive Resistance. This was a group of laws, passed in 1956, intended to prevent integration of the schools. A Pupil Placement Board was created with the power to assign specific students to particular schools. Tuition grants were to be provided to students who opposed integrated schools. The linchpin of Massive Resistance was a law that cut off state funds and closed any public school that attempted to integrate.

In September 1958 several schools in Warren County, Charlottesville, and Norfolk were about to integrate under court order. They were seized and closed, but the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals overturned the school-closing law. Simultaneously, a federal court issued a verdict against the law based on the "equal protection" clause of the 14th Amendment. Speaking to the General Assembly a few weeks later, Gov. J. Lindsay Almond conceded defeat. Beginning on February 2, 1959, a few courageous black students integrated the schools that had been closed. Still, hardly any African American students in Virginia attended integrated schools.

Probably saved their damn lives. :problem:

Quote:
By 1964, five years after the end of Massive Resistance, only 5 percent of black students in Virginia were attending integrated schools. The chief reason for this lack of progress was the Pupil Placement Board. In theory, the board could assign pupils to specific schools for any of a variety of reasons, not including race or color. "In actuality," writes historian Robert A. Pratt, "race was the only criterion considered; the Pupil Placement Board assigned very few black students to white schools in Virginia while it remained in operation." Roy Wilkins, executive secretary of the national NAACP said, "Virginia has the largest and most successful token integration program in the country."

Did I read correctly that now the Republican spin machine is now going after the third in line hoping that both gov and lt gov go? Do I smell a plot?

Yeah, what's the gubernatorial line of succession, here. It might not work out for them so well, though.

Lol I defy any of these conservative whites to come up with a better record on KKK/blackface cosplay or sexual misconduct than these Dems. :problem:

I can think of a few sources off the top of my head. First is Ian Haney-Lopez's White By Law: The Legal Construction of Race, which I'm sure I've mentioned before. I would say the post WW1 racial freakouts started long before WW1, namely with anti-Asian riots, violence, Exclusion Acts (1880s), Alien Land Laws (1910s), Land Runs in Indian Territory (turn of century - 1910s), and immigration from Eastern Europe.

Also, Plessy v Ferguson (1896) solidified segregation where ever a state wanted it. So you get the so-called Great Migrations, pt. 1 and 2 (both my parents were part of part 2 as little kids.)

You already know this, but after WW1, there was also the Red Summer of race riots, where conservative whites went around torching Black parts of town, and also where Black veterans came back home expecting some rights that they never really got.

The Elaine Massacre (1919) were particularly vicious. My father was born 11 years later to another sharecropping family, in an adjacent county to Elaine.

Conservative whites didn't like it that sharecroppers were organizing across racial lines. So, as usual, they ran around slashing and burning everyone in sight in the name of being civilized :problem:.

So one might understand the impetus of African Americans to migrate anywhere but there. My father's family ended up in Ohio in a rather famous steeltown. My mother's family went from Florida to additional industrial towns in Michgan and Western New York. 100 years earlier, that had been the Burnt-over District, which graced the world with all manner of wild-for-the time religious/cultural experiments like the Oneidas, the JWs, the Latter Day Saints, and other various total weirdoes & endlessly-fascinating whackjobs.

Oh yeah, and the very last stops on the Underground Railroad.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burned-over_district

So, it's a pretty steady stream of white freakouts, starting at least with the end of Reconstruction. White By Law is really good because it traces how "white" became a legal category in case law -- who did and didn't make successful arguments to courts that they were so-called "white". And that includes a lot of Eastern Europeans, Jews, Armenians, Iranian/Persians, Middle Easterners, and South Asians, some of whom are a lot darker than me, but whatever...

And then, you get God's Favorite geniuses at each other's throats (again), this time stuck in trenches lobbing bombs at each other. We could say that German supremacists were totally freaked out not just by the outcome of WW1 but by what that war actually looked like.

Another source that comes to mind is War Against the Weak by Edwin Black, which traces the development of the eugenics movement, which happened in parallel to all of the above, and deeply influenced both law and public policy. One fascinating aspect of eugenics is those people's history with conservation of nature, their interests in biology and other natural sciences, and how basically every name-brand Morrill Act and private college/university was packed to the gills with researchers feeding into this idea that you could breed people like plants and animals.

Of course, that would be nothing new in a former slave society which did exactly that for 200 years prior. :problem:

[soapbox]
We have a really impacted problem in this country with people's refusal to come to grips with what made them who/what they are. I guess a guy like Donald Trump and some of these other clowns like this governor and AG really blow the lid off of the supposed meritocracy. They are not self-made, they are law and public-policy made, laws and public policies meant to benefit them, and only them. The wheels are coming off of all of these people's little red wagons but I'm not glad for it, because these people are destablizing this entire country, right as some of us are just now getting on our feet. :problem:
[/soapbox]

Carmen hit it all, pretty much. I would point to the development of the pseudoscience of eugenics, by Francis Galton and others, in the late 19th century, Herbert Spencer's views on Social Darwinism, and the beginnings of what historians call the 2nd wave of immigration, ranging from 1880 to 1924. (The reason it ended in 1924 was the national counterpart to the Virginia law Carmen mentioned, the 1924 "Immigration Reform" Act, which was written by nativists and eugenicists. My paternal grandfather got here in 1921, which is good, as had he tried to get into the country 3 years later ... I might not be alive.)

The 2nd wave was mostly made up of Southern and Eastern Europeans, Italians, Ashkenazi Jews, Slavs, Poles, etc. As a result, the WASPs/"Anglo Saxons" further jumbled up their racialist pseudoscience to argue that many of these groups, being "Non Anglo Saxon" were also not sufficiently white, or genetically deficient to Anglo Saxons, as supposedly proved by a bunch of bullshit measurements of their skulls with calipers, poorly administered so-called IQ Tests at Ellis Island, and other nonsense.

A lot of this is well detailed in Stephen Jay Gould's Mismeasure of Man.
