Parkland One Year Later...Take A Moment To Remember The Dead

Post by marindem »

It has been one year since the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High.

Take a moment to honor the students and facility killed.

A coward murdered them.

Republican Cowards refuse to pass Universal Background Checks and close the Gun Show Loophole.

Nicole Sandler's adopted child went to that school. She lives in Coral Springs. The moment I heard about that shooting, I checked in with her to make sure her kid was OK.

I guess I didn't know she had graduated a year earlier - said Nicole - thank the stars.

Ron DeSantis has been a better governor than Skeletor, but it's a very low bar to clear. But he's already starting to irritate me, looks like he's putting pressure on the Broward School District, looking for scapegoats among the teachers and staff.

Governor asks grand jury to investigate school failures in Parkland shootings

Anything to avoid examining the real source of the problem.

Would that he and other governors put as much effort into investigating gun dealers, who are often violating the law on background checks and other laws.

I saw a Brady center report on this. Honestly, only 10% of the dealers out there are scum who would sell to anybody, even if they walked in and said they were part of al-Qaeda and blood was dripping from their hands. Those guys are how so many illegal guns wind up in criminal hands. If we could shut them down, there would be less blood on the streets.

Look, there were some failures by the police dept., and he's already gone after Broward Sheriff Scott Israel. Certainly the "unofficial" security officer who was on the grounds but never went in to the school failed to do his duty that day. He lost his job - fair enough, should have.

What was the school supposed to have done? What is the grand jury going to investigate? (Yes, I know it's in the article, but it still seems ridiculous. OK, I suppose it is an issue if school safety funds were misappropriated or misspent, but it still seems like a side issue.)

BTW, the Florida Legislature is still sticking to their old chestnut of arming teachers. Of course that's the answer.

Governors like DeSantis find it easier to blame the school than to do a real investigation.

As for the National Russian Association, they should their charter revoked for illegally funneling Black Money to 45's Campaign.

a year and not one thing done to make those kids safer.

a lot of self serving things, things for buisiness, things for image, things to aid in authorities abusing their power and students and not have to answer to their constituents, money for police, money for contractors, lots of things to invade peoples privacy, watch everything they do, things to be excessivly, abusively punative but not one thing to make the kids safer.

Is America really so selfish, self serving that it leaves this in place so it can capatalize on it over and over again or does it just have a great love for it happening and never want it to stop?

Here's what's happened since Parkland.

https://www.fastcompany.com/90306582/he ... d-shooting" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Florida passed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act in the wake of the shooting. It raised the age to purchase guns to 21 from 18, banned people legally judged “mentally defective” from buying a gun, and set up a system for law enforcement to take guns from people deemed a threat to themselves or others. The law also banned bump stocks, used in the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas. Bump stocks make semi-automatic weapons function like automatic guns so that they fire without the need to repeatedly press the trigger.

The federal government later effectively banned bump stocks nationwide, with a regulation signed by acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker requiring most gun owners to destroy or turn in the devices by March 26.

[snip][end]

Well, banning bump stocks isn't nothing, but it isn't much of something.

"Mental defective" - well, the words sound horrid, but I looked up the legal definition. Good, but the thing is this requires a finding by the legal system ... not a mental health diagnosis. Point is, this "adjudication" would only occur from a previous contact with the court system.

Gun restraining orders ... again, something, but not enough.

MHO ... so far, over the past year, most of the action has occurred at the state level, and unsurprisingly in states other than Florida. About 11 or so mostly blue states. (I didn't post the rest but it's at the link.)

Dunno, looks like some activity at the federal level is beginning again in the House. Problem is, will it all die in the Senate?

Die in the Senate?

Mitch McConnell is in a race with Scott Walker, Paul Ryan, Donald Rump, Ronald Reagan and W for who did the most damage to the nation in the shortest amount of time. I guess Walker doesnt get to be in this, his horrific damage was limited to WI.

What makes me INSANE is the FORTY FIVE MILLION of us who dont care about any of this, they really dont.

Rump hates Black and Gay

They hate Black and Gay

End of story.

Gun Violence is the REAL NATIONAL EMERGENCY in our Country. Averaging out the numbers you give, tells us that 100-Students a Month are KILLED BY GUN VIOLENCE. Not some stage managed, non-existent crisis on the Southern Border.

100-Students a Month Dead. Cons do nothing, please tell us Cons if DAESH/Al Qeada were that many Americans every month....what the fuck wold YOU be demanding?

The local observance here in metro Chicago included a disgruntled laid off employee asshole who walked into the Henry Pratt Company in Aurora, IL on Friday and at a meeting where he was being fired, shot five innocent people to death. Thus proving himself to be an asshole who should have been fired.

Amongst the five dead was a 21 year old Northern Illinois University student who showed up Friday morning for the first day of his internship.

Four police officers were also wounded, none seriously, before they were able to kill the perp...one Gary Martin 42, who police subsequently reported was a felon, who had purchased his handgun, the purchase had been flagged within days of the sale, and he had been contacted and ordered to turn the gun over to the local police.

So...background checks my ass.

In Parkland, they've constructed something called the Temple of Time.

Image

People can leave messages, memorial objects, reflections, whatever they feel like.

Very Buddhist; once it's served its purpose for a short while, the whole thing will be burned down.

The guy who made it, quel surprise, is an artist who's been to Burning Man.

Shades of Buddhist sand paintings. They're into ephemeral art. The sand blows away, and it's gone, and that's part of the art.

Well, it keeps them out of the collector disease, at least.

We've had a lot of consciousness and a few new laws, but far as I can tell, Americans still have this unique thing of addressing perceived problems by shooting each other.

If you're lucky, the Russia story will take out the NRA as well, maybe you'll have a better chance of doing something sensible.
The radical of one century is the conservative of the next. The radical invents the views. When he has worn them out, the conservative adopts them.
