There was a headline on CNN this morning (I think it was CNN, didn't see it just now) that was basically "Who will blink first?".

Now, there's likely a LOT of things going on behind the scenes, that we may not know about, but it seems to me that there's zero reason for the 20 or so Republicans to blink at all, and many reasons for them not to. If they switch and vote for McCarthy, they're done as far as their leadership of the base and fundraising from it. Their whole thing is to blow up the government, and that's what their base wants. In September, they want to refuse to raise the debt limit and refuse to pass any budget unless the Dems allow them to trash Medicare and Social Security.

Now, the GOP has tried unsuccessfully many times in the past to shut down the government, but succumbed to public pressure, a public that LIKES having a functional government. But it's different now. These folks will feel no pressure, because they are in safe districts and their base wants them to destroy the "Uniparty" (everyone that isn't these 20 or so folks). If they can keep the Speaker from putting a bill on the floor, there's nothing anyone can do to change it.

This is what Glenn, Joe and Greengrass voted for. Let's remember that Glenn's Congressman Ralph Norman is one of them, and there's nothing Norman can do that would keep Glenn from voting for him in 2024.

I can go a while without my government retirement check. I wonder how many other retired Americans can?

I doubt the 19 or 20 outliers would let that happen. It would force enough of them to cave.

And if they didn’t then yes, Jeffries would be speaker.

They have no reason to cave. If this were to happen (it won't), then they would be vindicated about the "uniparty" and REALLY be able to fund raise.

If there’s a resolution for a plurality vote they’d have a big reason to cave. Hakeem Jeffries as speaker.

You don't get it (probably on purpose). They aren't interested in a functioning government. They want to be AGAINST. And this huge far-right machinery would be working against EVERY Republican that voted to change the rule. Just like all the Republicans that voted to impeach Trump are no longer in office.

They are in this for the long haul, to completely take over the GOP. Get rid of ANYONE who is interested in a functioning government.

And that's what you are voting for.

That would pretty much put Democrats in control. And we’d have functioning government. Not a bad thing.

Dems in control are the ONLY way to have a functioning government.

But then, that's not what Republicans want, is it?

It’s five crazy disrupters and 10 or so who just want someone different than McCarthy. If this drags on long enough both sides will tire of it.

No, the entire 20 are disruptors. And disruption is what they want. They don't WANT a functioning government. They want a government that is shut down.

So exactly WHY will they tire of it?

Now, truthfully, the LOGICAL thing would be to cut a deal with the Dems, but I just don't see that happening. That would be a disaster for the entire GOP, not just the House GOP. If they capitulated to the Dems, how could they make a case in 2024 for themselves? I mean, it shows they would be admitting to the world they are incapable of governing.

Of course the right was lying through their teeth that there would be an actual alternative to McCarthy. But then, Republicans always lie, Hill article from Monday:
Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) predicted on Monday that a “true” conservative would emerge to challenge House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in his quest to become Speaker and doubled down on a promise to vote against McCarthy one day ahead of the leadership election.

“I think you’ll see on the second ballot an increasing number of members vote for a true candidate who can represent the conservative center of the conference, can motivate the base,” Good said on Fox News.

*snip*

In response to a question about who that person might be, Good said he would “resist” naming someone, as that person would face retaliation.

“If we were to put forth a name right now or over the last few weeks, that person would have suffered all the attacks and retaliation,” Good said. “You’ll see that name tomorrow on the second ballot.”
Which, we now know, is bullshit. Jordan isn't an actual candidate for the speakership. They just don't have anyone else.

Nice breakdown of the 20 nutjobs voting to keep the Congress from forming:
More than half of the lawmakers who voted against Mr. McCarthy explicitly denied the results of the 2020 election, compared with about 15 percent of the 222 total members in the Republican caucus, according to a New York Times analysis. These Republicans said that the election had been stolen or rigged — or that Donald J. Trump was the rightful winner — even though Joe Biden earned seven million more votes and 74 more electors than Mr. Trump.

“President Trump won that election,” said Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, one of the five newcomers who opposed Mr. McCarthy’s speaker bid. Representatives Matt Gaetz of Florida and Andy Biggs of Arizona, who have emerged as ringleaders against Mr. McCarthy’s bid, have also called the 2020 election stolen.

Nearly all of the lawmakers who voted against Mr. McCarthy made statements casting doubt on the 2020 election, often repeatedly, not unlike the overall Republican caucus. At least 180 of the 222 House Republicans have questioned 2020, according to The Times’s analysis.

Our conservatives can make up all the shit they want about what's happening, or just pretend nothing is going on, but no less than John Boehner himself gives the reality check:
Writing on Twitter, Politico reporter Heidi Przybyla highlighted a passage from Boehner's memoir, which was published in 2021, where he shed some light on what animates the hardline caucus of the contemporary Republican Party.

"What they're really interested in is chaos," wrote Boehner. "They want to throw sand in the gears of the hated federal government until it fails and they've finally proved that it's beyond saving."

Boehner also highlighted the role that Fox News and other right-wing media played in this role by essentially rewarding Republicans who work to sabotage any effort at governance.

"Every time they vote down a bill, they get another invitation to go on Fox News or talk radio," he explained. "It's a narcissistic -- and dangerous -- feedback loop."

I got thinking this morning, a very dangerous activity on my part, of how McCarthy can get elected and he wouldn't need any Democrats to vote for him. McCarthy could get 10 of his supporters together and carry out this plan. When they're in their caucus have two of McCarthy supporters declare that if McCarthy isn't elected the next ballot the two of them will vote for Jeffries. If he still hasn't won then they have eight more members who will start voting for Jeffries. On the next ballot, if McCarthy loses then two more of his supporters will vote for Jeffries. This will give Jeffries 216 out of the 218 needed. That should worry the 20 holdouts. If McCarthy doesn't get elected then another of his supporters votes for Jeffries. With only one vote more for Jeffries to be elected I think there would be enough of the holdouts to vote for McCarthy to prevent Jeffries and the Democrats from being in-charge of the House. In the words of Judy Tenuta "IT COULD HAPPEN?"
When you vote left, you vote right.

Those disrupters are the ones salivating at the prospect of committee oversight hearings. And blocking election of a speaker will keep that from happening

They're more interested in shutting down the government. It's what your side has salivated about for years.

How about the Dems and the ten or so sane Republicans elect former MD Governor Larry Hogan Speaker?

What republican leadership should do is pull those 20 fools in a room and tell them the next vote you vote for McCarthy or the vote after that the GOP caucus will vote for Jefferies.
Sometimes in life you have to stand up to your tormentor even if it means getting your ass kicked.
Those 20 power hungry egomaniacs are the reason the gop doesn't have a senate majority as well as about another 20 seats on the House.
Time for the GOP leaders to grow a pair and shut them up and shut them down

Oh, sounds good, but they can't force them to do anything. And even if they could, they aren't adult enough to do so. There aren't hardly any adults left in the GOP anymore.

I like the idea of the 10 or so sane GOP Congressmen left to get with the Dems and elect Hogan as Speaker. But Jeffries is a fine idea too.
