Great game.
Too bad people like to celebrate sports championships by destroying their own cities. It always kind of ruins it.

How does it happen that SoFI, a student loan re-financing company, could spend $625 million to put its name on the LA Rams football stadium when 45 million Americans are drowning in $1.8 trillion in student debt? Today would be a good day for the President to cancel student debt.

While you're justifiably decrying our fracked up priorities, don't forget Crypto Arena downtown. The Lakers used to play right next to where SoFi is now, and they moved downtown when the corporations built an entertainment complex and spent a kazillion dollars on a new place (Staples Center aka Crypto Arena) where there are three levels of skyboxes and the few ordinary (majority Black) people pay half their income for crummy seats in the rafters up above those.
I don't think the resentment ever went away, and that's one of many reasons the worst riots after sports happenings always seem to start there.
I get it.

As long as they spend their own money on stadiums and arenas and not use taxpayer dollars but we know that, in reality, taxpayer dollars were used and will continue to be used either in helping them build them, for infrastructure support, and long-term support.ZoWie wrote: ↑Tue Feb 15, 2022 11:31 am You're preaching to the choir on SoFi.

Taxpayer dollars always get used, one way or another. Also the old Lakers venue was far more friendly to the spectators, with good seats within reach of the middle class, not to mention the relatively impoverished Black locals. Also, they hadn't jacked up ticket prices to pay for the new place yet.Number6 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 15, 2022 2:25 pm As long as they spend their own money on stadiums and arenas and not use taxpayer dollars but we know that, in reality, taxpayer dollars were used and will continue to be used either in helping them build them, for infrastructure support, and long-term support.
Something similar happened with the Rams. Inglewood is largely a Black neighborhood, but the new complex there cost a fortune and they need to make some of it back, plus the parking is woefully inadequate. Then people wonder why home games have the other team's colors in half the seats.
What happened was that LA threw the displaced South LA fans of color a bone by giving them a place to assemble near the new Lakers arena, in the South Park/Microsoft corporate entertainment complex, where they could watch on a big screen. That's been a riot about to happen ever since. If an LA team wins a championship, that's always where the trouble starts. It's harder to get upset about it if you understand how we got to the place where we find ourselves.
