This has been an absolutely terrible year for avian influenza. Especially in the midwest. Millions and millions of turkeys and chickens have been "depopulated" in the last couple of months. It's really the only thing that can be done to address an outbreak.
Apparently, it happens on a seven year cycle.
This year, it is killing wild and captive birds. Seven years ago, it was mostly wild birds. All of the local transmission to date has been from wild birds to captive birds. Even the barns with the highest levels of biosecurity have been impacted.
It's not surprising that a human case has been identified this year. Hope we do not have any more.
